A-League Week 10 With Ze Phibber

Another week has come and gone in the great game down under, sadly this week is now being over shadowed by the unspeakable events that have taken place in Sydney's Martin Place. My thoughts have gone out to all of those involved in this truly tragic time.

The first game of the week was between Adelaide United and the Brisbane Roar. The match finished with Brisbane taking the three points thanks to an absolute gem of a strike from Brazilian Henrique. Henrique was on the edge of the box and picked out the top right corner oh so perfectly making it look so easy! If only finding a Christmas present for my girlfriend was that easy. This was the first home loss Adelaide have faced in over 370 days, and funnily enough the last home defeat was to the Roar. Adelaide did not look like the same team of former weeks, sure they had some players out, but their finishing was very poor and realistically should have come away with at least a point.

The second game of the week was between league leaders Perth Glory and bottom dwellers the Newcastle Jets. The match finished with the Glory coming away victorious 2-0. Goals to Richard Garcia (Per) and Nebojsa Marinkovic (Per). Boy the Glory are looking good at the moment, they are linking together well, defending well and most importantly are taking the opportunities that they are creating. Marinkovic also scored an absolute pinger of a goal. What a strike! I was tossing between Henriques' goal and Marinkovic's, but I think I'm going to give the Phibber's Goal Of The Week to Marinkovic, similar goals and from pretty much same distance out, only difference was Marinkovic absolutely pumped his whereas Henriques was more of a finesse shot. Therefore Marinkovic has been awarded Phibber's Goal Of The Week.

The Jets didn't necessarily play bad, they just are not on the same level as the Glory, I think the Glory are definitely eyeing up that silverware and it is going to be bloody hard to try and take it away from them. Also the captain of the Jets Kew Jaliens had an absolute shocker with a very loose challenge resulting in a straight red. There seams to be a bit of a trend at the moment with captains acting like total knob heads. I mean the challenge was bad enough, but come on mate you are the captain, you're pretty much meant to lead your team and not act like a tool. As you would assume, he is therefore the lovely recipient of the Phibbers Knob Of The Week.

The third game of the week was between the good old Phoenix and the Central Coast Mariners. I love it when the Nix get to play at Eden park, but was slightly disappointed with the turn out. The Nix have been playing well this year and I at least expected a few bandwagon supporters to show up. Anyway the match finished 1 goal a piece. Goals to Matt Simon (Cen) and Roy Krishna (Wel). There was a gathering outside my window walking down the street on Saturday banging drums and chanting about Krishna, at first I thought it was a religious group, but when I got to see the replay of the match I realised they must have been chanting for my boy Roy Krishna - boy is he in some good form right now. The Phoenix will be disappointed with themselves as they really should have come away with the 3 points. They looked so dangerous especially in the first half. Just their final execution was a bit off, either a poor shot or a touch to many. But hey at least they managed to come away with a point.

The final game of the week was between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC. And what did I tell you last week? I think I said it would be a cracker, and boy was it! The match finished 3 all with Archie Thompson grabbing a hatty for the Victory and Mark Janko grabbing one and Shane Smeltz sneaking a double for the Sky Blues. It was a battle between two legends, Archie and Shane. Both players were in top form and playing great footy, apparently not being able to put a foot wrong.

Smeltz set up the first goal with the sneakiest of touches allowing Janko to open up like a lady in a brothel and slip it in to the corner. Archie on the other side was taking a more direct approach and just playing basic clinical footy, which really paid off. I think maybe Sydney deserved the win as Victory should have had a red card when skipper Mark Milligan went into a challenge with his elbows. This would have given Sydney a massive advantage and the game I don't think would have had the same outcome. Honestly, it's like the captains are in cahoots with each other to see how many red cards they can collect in this season.

Another week has come and gone, next week is the final week before Christmas. All I want for Christmas is the Nix to get up over Sydney next week, I want to be able to get my shirt off and swing it around furiously, whilst abusing every Sky Blue supporter in sight. Come on St Nick make it happen.
