We were treated to another big weekend of footy, kicking off with a very tough match between the Rabbitohs and the Tigers. The Rabbitohs were the favourites, but came up against a Tigers team who are playing very well thanks to Luke Brooks and James Tedesco. It was the forwards however that gave the Tigers the edge, as they dominated the Rabbitohs big boys and came out the winners 25-16.
The Roosters then got a last minute win against the Broncos, with Boyd Cordner running through a big gap to score the winning try late in the match giving the Roosters a 30-26 win. The Broncos were winning most of the match and they showed why they might be a force in 2014. However, you can't count the champions out at thanks to some smart play from New South Wales halfback Mitchell Pearce, they snatched a win from the Broncos.
It was Matt Moylan, fullback for the Penrith Panthers who stole the show on Saturday. The 22 year old who is in his second season of NRL footy kicked the winning goal to break the hearts of Bulldogs fans. Penrith winger Kevin Naiqama scored a try in the corner to make it 16-16 before Moylan stepped up and confidently slotted the kick from the sideline. A moment every young player dreams of.
It was another close match between rivals the Cronulla Sharks and the St George Dragons, with the Dragons winning 14-12. This match will be remembered for a try from Brett Morris who flew through the air to score an amazing try for the Dragons.
Wow, the Warriors some how beat the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville. They were looking good with Konrad Hurrell and Sione Lousi scoring to give the Warriors the lead, but they let the Cowboys back in to the match. Thanks to some tough defence on their try line, some mistakes from the Cowboys and some help from the referees, the Warriors were able to win their first match of 2014 16-20.
There was another very close match on Sunday between the Manly Sea Eagles and the Parramatta Eels, with Manly winning 22-18. Manly centre Steve Matai scored a try in the last minute to win the game for Manly which left many Parramatta fans heart broken. Parramatta look a lot better than last season and have a Fijian beast on the wing - Semi Radradra who is very exciting to watch.
Also on Sunday, the Gold Coast Titans beat the Canberra Raiders in another close match 24-12. Anthony Milford once again showed his talents as he scored for the Raiders but it was a very tough and experienced Gold Coast team who were too good. Albert Kelly scored a try in the last few minutes to seal the game.
On Monday night the Melbourne Storm were too good for a tough Newcastle Knights who haven't won a game yet. Melbourne won 28-20 with Fijian Sisa Waqa scoring the try to kick start the Melbourne Storm an get them back in the match. We were reminded of the dangers of rugby league though as Alex McKinnon suffered a broken neck thanks to a dangerous tackle. Let's hope he can recover from this sad injury and get back with his team mates.
