Transient

England

It is getting really close to the end of the season, and the Premier League has never been more competitive. Spots are still up for grabs in the Champions League, the Europa League, the relegation battle and especially the EPL title. Manchester City did their best to keep up in that one, beating Southampton 4-1. It was sad to see England forward Jay Rodriguez injured, as he will now miss the chance to make the England World Cup squad. The result was a fair one though, and City deservedly got the three points. With City next playing Liverpool, the winner of that game could decide the title, though Chelsea may still have something to say about that. The Blues easily beat Stoke to move temporarily into first place, but only until Liverpool played the next day against West Ham, and won 2-1 thanks to two Steven Gerrard penalties. Fourth place is suddenly wide open after Everton smashed Arsenal in a shock result. Romelu Lukaku was the star in that game.

Elsewhere in the EPL, Manchester United easily beat Newcastle thanks to star signing Juan Mata who scored two goals and set up a third in a 4-0 win. Tottenham also won easily, thrashing Sunderland 5-1. Spurs youngster Harry Kane scored in his first Premier League start – watch out for him in the future, he could be a star! At the bottom of the table, Fulham kept their survival chances alive by winning against Aston Villa, though Cardiff look doomed after another loss, this time to Crystal Palace.

Spain

There are three teams fighting to win La Liga this season. Obviously Real Madrid and Barcelona are always going to be up the top, but this year Atletico Madrid are beating both of them! Atletico are not as good on attack as the other big boys, and they do not have the same number of world class players to call upon, but they have the best defensive record in Spain, and have only conceded a tiny 22 goals in 32 games! All three of the big teams won this week, which means Atletico stay top, ahead of Barcelona by one point, and three points ahead of Real Madrid. Atletico play Barca in the final game of the season, which could be the title decider. It might be worth skipping school that morning.

Germany

Bayern Munich finally lost! After 52 games in a row without a loss in the Bundesliga, they went down 1-0 to Augsburg. With the massive Champions League game against Manchester United coming up, Bayern chose to rest a lot of their best players to make sure that they are fit for the more important game. They still had the likes of Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Neuer though, and should have been able to win. With three games in a row without a win now, Bayern all of a sudden seem a little vulnerable….

Italy

Well it looks like Juventus have wrapped up the Scudetto with a 2-0 win over Livorno. They were always likely to win this match with Livorno struggling at the bottom of the table but Juventus still had to go out and perform. Carlos Tevez returned for Juve although it was Fernando Llorente who scored the two goals and ensured victory. Juventus have struggled for a couple of years, but they have one of the best midfields going around now, and look like they will be a force in the Champions League once more next season. In the rest of the Italian Serie A, Roma had a big 4-2 win over Parma, which pretty much earns them second place. Third placed Napoli fell to a 1-0 loss.

Australia

The Phoenix’s dreams of the postseason officially ended with a 4-1 loss in Sydney. It was going to be tough even if they did win, but in terrible conditions, they did not really have a chance against a strong Sydney team and an in form Alessandro Del Piero. The best moment was when Ben Sigmund was dragged away in mid-air from an argument with the Sydney keeper! It has been 6 games since the Nix last won. Their season was ruined by injuries. At least they should have a really strong team next season! Brisbane are still the team to beat, though Western Sydney and Central Coast will push them to the limit in the playoffs. With one round to go,  Newcastle will need a bit of a miracle to make it into the top 6 over Sydney.
