The Black Caps faced Afghanistan on Sunday in a game that they were always expected to win easily. Afghanistan put up a good fight and made the Black Caps worked hard for their win but in the end the Black Caps were simply too good.
Afghanistan batted first and it was Daniel Vettori who was the star of the show for the Black Caps as he took four wickets, which was enough to give him 300 ODI wickets. That's a great effort from Vettori who has been playing international cricket for as long as I can remember.
Vettori finished with figures of 10 overs, four wickets for 18 runs which put the Black Caps in a great position as he not only took wickets, but Afghanistan weren't able to score many runs of him either.
Trent Boult also bowled very well. He took three wickets and while the Black Caps were in control for much of the game, Afghanistan were able to fight their way to 186 which put some pressure on the kiwis. Samiullah Shenwari scored 54 and Najibullah Zadran scored 56 for Afghanistan which gave them some runs to work with.
Once again, Brendon McCullum got the Black Caps rolling with 42 off 19 balls. McCullum is not only a great captain in the field, but he is a leader who takes charge and sets a good example for his team. His quick runs put the Black Caps in a great position and Martin Guptill was able to score 57 runs which allowed the Black Caps the chance to cruise to victory having lost only four wickets.
The Black Caps will play Bangladesh next who they will again be expected to beat. Bangladesh are a very good cricket side though and will challenge the Black Caps who are first in their pool.
