Dry, dead pan vocals chant over skittish guitar and danceable 70s grooves—songs snapping like rubber bands—seesawing between post-punk and its insomniac twin sister disco. With contradicting references as overt as Talking Heads (without the shoulders), but as specific as Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra (with some polka dots), the band is carrying a funky torch that does not get lit too often. The four members of Public Practice—singer Sam York, guitarist Vince McClelland, synth/bassist and vocalist Drew Citron, and drummer/programmer and producer Scott Rosenthal—are no strangers to song writing. A Brooklyn DIY super group of sorts, Public Practice combines members of freshly-dead punk project WALL and local pop band Beverly. Public Practice backs their ambitious song writing with serious chops, their live shows already pulling them into the sharp foreground of a scene growing all too warm-and-fuzzy. Sam York’s lyrics reflect the city and it’s contradictions—they are personal, funny, cryptic and surreal, but never truly pessimistic, rotating around an individual’s toxic but symbiotic relationship with perception. Songs like the sarcastically-titled “Foundation” deep-fry Beach Boys guitars in ice-cold-but-somehow-funky Scritti Politti grooves. Add a dead pan David Byrney vocal, and Public Practice remind us again how integral it is to use honesty and self-reflection to bring some of life’s double-standards to light. By the end of the short and bitter-sweet 4-song EP, punctuated by Sam York’s sign-off of “no you can’t take it back now,” Public Practice anchors themselves as a new band with wisdom like their influences, bringing songs distinctly fresh as they are familiar. Married Bakersfield, California-based duo Fawns of Love (Jenny and Joseph Andreotti) will issue their recently aired session for the Los Angeles-based “Part Time Punks” radio show as a limited edition 12-inch vinyl and digital release on August 24th, 2018. Also included will be a cover of the song “Rocket Science” by one of Andreotti’s favorite bands, The Chills. “Being such a huge fan of The Chills comes from this belief that they have one of the most eclectic and exciting back catalogs, and are also making contemporary music that is not only amazing but socially and politically significant as well,” Jenny says. Fawns of Love chose to cover “Rocket Science” for a couple of specific reasons. As Jenny explains, “We would have been thrilled to cover any of The Chills’ songs from any part of their catalog, but we decided on ‘Rocket Science’ because the lyrical message of the danger of political complacency is powerful, and we were excited by the possibility of taking one of The Chills more aggressive songs and filtering it through our sound.” Describing the “Part Time Punks” session that is documented in this release, Joseph says, “We performed a selection of songs that were released on our debut LP Who Cares About Tomorrow, ‘Falling’ off of our ‘Falling/Standing’ 7-inch, as well as ‘Please’ off of DKFM’s Alternative Facts: A Shoegaze Resistance Compilation. The six songs included are also alternate versions of the songs that appeared on the original releases. We edited them to be more minimal, we re-programmed drum beats, and we included a few new instruments and melodies. Both full-time teachers, the Andreottis have been married for 13 years, performing together for 16, and recording, touring and releasing music throughout that time under various names and labels. In 2013, they began a break when Jenny enrolled in a history graduate program, but by 2017, it was time to begin being a band again, including choosing a new name. “One of our favorite records is Hounds of Love by Kate Bush,” Joseph says. “We wanted a name that would pay homage to that.” In the short time that Fawns of Love have been releasing music, a steady stream of praise has met the heartfelt work which Jenny and Joseph record at home using vintage equipment. The new Fawns of Love release “Part Time Punks Sessions (plus “Rocket Science”) EP, arrives on limited edition vinyl and digital on August 24th, 2018.
