Week 17 In The A-League With Ze Phibber

A new week of footy has graced us with its presence and my lord it was a bit of an angry week of footy. A lot of penalties and a lot of cards. The Wellington Phoenix are on struggle street and as the end of the season draws closer I am getting more and more nervous.

The first game of the week was between the Brisbane Roar and the Central Coast Mariners. The match finished with the Roar taking out the match 2-0. Goals to Jean Carlos Solorzano (Bri), Andrija Kaluderovic (Bri). Both goals were pens and I think that Brisbane were slightly lucky to take out the match. Both teams did create a few chances. The Mariners actually looked good in this match and were unlucky to loose. Never less the Roar got the 3 points and as a result have moved up into the top 6.

The second game of the week was between the Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne City FC. The match finished in a slightly disappointing 0-0 stalemate. You know it's been an exciting game when there was only one shot on target from each side. What did make the game exciting though was the amount of physicality that was brought to the match, both fair and ahhh not so fair. 8 yellow cards in total, 6 of which awarded to Melbourne City. It was actually painful to watch the Phoenix on Saturday. It was a classic case of so close yet so far that had me pulling at my hair. Roy Krishna I love you mate but shit, please never play like that again. It hurts me to do this but when you air swing a 5 yard tap in you basically give yourself the Phibbers Knob Of The Week, sorry buddy. The Phoenix need to get their mojo back, hopefully next week we can see some of that pre break form.

The third game of the week was between the Newcastle Jets and the Western Sydney Wanderers. The match finished 1-1 with goals to Brendon Santalab (Wes) and Lee Ki-Je (New). The Wanderers looked destined to take out the match when they were awarded a pen for a hand ball with 4 mins to go, but it was not to be with the Jets going down the other end and getting a pen of their own.

This week has been crazy. Three pens so far from handballs in the box. Have players forgot that the sport is called FOOT-BALL? I wanna talk about Brendon Santalab quickly. When you are struggling at the bottom of the table and you get a pen in the 86th minute, most players are going to be shitting bricks. Not Santalab, the cheeky son of a bitch chipped it down the middle! What a pen. Then he ran and grabbed a phone and went and took a photo of the crowd! I love this guy!! But yeah, the Jets denied the Wanderers a much needed 3 points. 2 wins in 2 weeks would have been a bit crazy though.

The fourth game of the week was between Sydney FC and the Melbourne Victory and actually saw more goals then the first 3 games combined. The match finished with both teams grabbing 3 goals a piece. Marc Janko (Syd), Kosta Barbarouses (Mel), Guilherme Finklee (Mel), Shane Smelts (Syd), Nicholas Ansell (Mel) and Smelts (Syd). What a game, you actually couldn't get more of an exciting fixture, the game had everything 6 goals, 7 yellow cards and a smidge of controversy. Firstly just quickly, I know I said it last week, but how good is Kosta Barbarouses? Shit he is good quality.

Sydney were slightly lucky to come away with the 3 points. I mean they played bloody well but that second pen was so, so, so soft. I actually cannot even emphasise how soft that was. In no way should that have been a pen in any league anywhere. As I said I don't want to take anything away from Sydney though 'cos those calls are made and you have to make the most of them and that is what they did. Also Shane Smeltz came up with a pearler to equalise at 3 all with 5 mins to go. He rose high and chipped Nathan Coe with a brilliant header. I mean I know Shane is quality in the air but this was awesome.

The final game of the week was between Adelaide United and Perth Glory. The match finished with both teams grabbing a goal a piece. Goals to Pablo Sanchez (Ade) and Nebojsa Marinkovic (Per). Adelaide looked bloody good in this game but due to some poor finishing they where not able to take the most of the opportunities created. Pablo Sanchez's goal was absolutely class with a great showcase of dribbling and then a great little chip into the net. It would have been the goal of the week but Marinkovic scored an absolute steamer of a goal. About twenty yards out and just had the perfect amount of power and accuracy and picked out the top corner so nicely. As a result he has the Phibbers Goal Of The Week. Adelaide were very unlucky not to get a clear penalty in the final ten minutes of the match which would have most likely given them the victory. Perth were lucky to get the point here and almost lost their top spot. But alas they are still in that number one position.

It was a crazy week of football this week we saw a total of 6 pens and a whopping 29 yellow cards. That is out of control, it looks like all teams need to work on their discipline! 29 yellows is just crazy. I do love when are players are passionate but maybe tone it down a bit aye
