The Asian Cup With Ze Phibber - That Final Huh??

On Saturday we witnessed history. For the first time in Australian football's history the Socceroos were able to slap a nice bit of silverware into their very baron trophy cabinet. And it wasn't just any old trophy. It was the 2015 Asian Cup.

The Socceroos matched up against the Republic of Korea in the final of the 2015 Asian cup. This was going to be no easy feat. Korea had handed Australia their only defeat of the tournament and had not even conceded a single goal. ANZ stadium, or stadium Australia or whatever you want to call it was packed to the brim, nearly 80,000 people. The atmosphere was electric and it really did feel like football was starting to create a real presence in Australia. Korea looked to be the dominant team for the first half. Australia where creating chances but not as many as they would have liked too. Korea did a stand up job of keeping Timmy Cahill locked down, and managed to create many promising attacks.

It wasn't until the final minute of the first half when young gun Massimo Luongo managed to put on an absolute stand out piece of individual brilliance and bang home a goal to seperate the two teams. Massimo received the ball about 30 yards out opened himself up with a brilliant turn took a few touches then absolutely pounded a shot into the bottom corner. It was brilliant.

The goal just before the half definitely gave the Socceroos an advantage coming out of the sheds for the second half. But once again it was the Koreans who were firing and they kept probing the Australian goal. Ange ended up takin Timmy off with about 30 minutes to go, I think he may have had a slight niggle with his foot, otherwise I think he would have kept him on. And then injury after injury plagued Australia and after about 20 mins Ange had brought on all 3 subs, Tommy Juric, Matt McKay and James Troisi.

The fresh legs did add a bit for Australia but Korea were determined to gain an equaliser, and that's exactly what happened when deep into injury time the Koreans marquee player Heung-Min Son denied the Socceroos of the regular time victory and slotted the ball into the back of the net. Heung-Min had been a little disappointing up until this point but really did show his class with a great finish.

Son's goal sent the game into extra time. This had me and I'm sure all Socceroos supporters worrying as Korea had definitely been the better side towards the end of the match and they were just on a high after scoring late in the game. I was certain they would come out firing and that it was going to be a hard feat for Australia to keep them from claiming the match and the trophy. However much to my suprise it was the Aussies that came out firing.

They played attacking smart football and almost looked as though they hadn't already been playing for an hour and a half. As the first half of extra time came to a close, a so far disappointing Juric did something amazing. Facing away from goal Juric managed to beat his marker and drive in a dangerous ball which was parried strait to other substitute James Troisi who pumped it into the goal giving the Roos the win and claiming their first ever price of Silverware.

It was a well fought match from both sides but Australia never gave up hope and as a result now have a nice shiny trophy to stare at. A footballing achievement like this does wonders for a nation. We are going to see big things come from this. Well done the Socceroos.
