A-League Semi Finals & Final With Ze Phibber
Semi finals time baby. The semis are done and dusted and our final two have now been confirmed and are set for an epic battle this weekend. For the first time this year I actually was correct with my predictions (they were probably the easiest one to pick). The final is now set with both Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory getting the ever valuable W over the weekend. No one can argue that both these teams don't deserve to be here, especially Melbourne Victory who have shown consistent class throughout the season.
The first game of the week was the Melbourne Derby! Victory showed why they were the premiership plate winners with a brilliant 3-0 win. Goals to Besart Berisha, Kosta Barbarouses and Archie Thompson. Basically the main difference between the two Melbourne teams was that Victory were very clinical and made the most of their opportunities which explains why they are the Plate winners. City had 17 shots in total but only a shot accuracy of 28% compared to the Victory's 60% and they will be slightly disappointed with themselves because they created the opportunities but just could not capitalise.
Let's have a quick chat about Kosta Barbarouses' goal. What a cracker, brilliant volley right into the top corner. Tando Velaphi had no chance of even getting close to that. It is so hard to hit the ball when it is coming across your body like that and have enough control to keep it under the crossbar. Great goal and it's the Phibber's Goal Of The Week. Well deserved win here for the Victory here, next weeks game is going to be a level higher and every one of the Victory players are going to need to be on top of their game. Victory have now won 4 games in succession and have hit top form at the perfect moment.
The second semi final was between Sydney FC and Adelaide United. The match finished with Sydney showing their class in a convincing 4-1 win. Goals to Bernie Ibini (Syd), Alex Brosque (2, Syd), Craig Goodwin (Ade) and Chris Naumoff (Syd). Alex Brosque take your hat off, the last 5 or so games you have led by such great example and this semi final was no different.
Excellent work grabbing a brace one of which was absolutely fantastic! Sydney have had some serious trouble with Adelaide United in the past but they just showed how clutch they were this weekend. Credit to Adelaide who although they were unable to make the final have had a great year. They really never gave up and were almost unlucky not to come away with a result in this match. Craig Goodwin's goal really sparked Adelaide into life who until then had been relatively quiet. However they were unable to make anything set and could not capitalise on the opportunities they were creating. It would have been so good to see a come back and see the game pushed to extra time. But hey a 5 goals in a semi, I can't complain.
Boy am I excited for this final this week. Sydney and Melbourne have been two of the best teams this year and are very deserving to be in this years final. Both have a good shot of claiming victory here. It's going to be a great game. It's hard to pick who will be the victor here, Alex Brosque is in devastating form at the moment and he will be crucial in this match. Will Marc Janko break his goal drought? There is a bit of talk around Besart Berisha and how he will play, as much as I dislike the bloke I have a feeling he will have a stormer. I'm calling Sydney getting the win here. 2-1 in extra time. Bring on game day.
