The One Thing To Worry About...

Unlike Australia, New Zealand cricket is not flush with cricketing depth. By depth I mean guys who can be called on to handle the business straight away, we might have young guys who offer hope for the future and we might have battlers who earn call ups because there's no one else, but we don't have international ready cricketers waiting in the wings.
The top tier for the Black Caps fills me with hope, joy and anticipation. Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee, Trent Boult and BJ Watling/Luke Ronchi all offer a touch of class with some offering world class, class. Even the likes of Martin Guptill, Mitchell McGlenaghan and Nathan McCullum are great cricketers who fit in to the mix perfectly, but what happens if there's a few injuries?
Ah, danger, injuries. We can't predict nor stop injuries, they happen. Awesome, so something that we have zero control over could be the difference between a fairy tale World Cup performance and another let down. The only thing we can do is plan, hope for the best but prepare for the worst and get guys game time.
The gap between our best players and the guys to call upon in the case of an injury is huge. In other cricketing nations, that gap is a lot smaller - there's always gonna be a gap but ensuring that it's as small as possible is the key. Replace Williamson with Dean Brownlie? Replace Ross Taylor with Tom Latham? Replace Tim Southee with Matt Henry? It makes you nervous.
Everything out of the Black Caps camp gives me hope, they understand, they know what it takes to be the best and they'll ensure that the depth is there. But it's a fine line, it's a warning for the cricketing public who jump on the wagon quicker than those latte sippers supporting the Warriors. The Black Caps can one day be national heroes and the next their the laughing stock. This could happen not because of anything cricketing related, but injuries.
So what? What does that mean? It means adopt a religion, whichever you like and offer prayer. Make a shrine and offer sacrifice, do whatever you can to ensure that the evil face of injury stays in its cave.
