Black Caps Black Book ... /Diary - October 28

2-0.

We say goodbye the South Africans following a rained out 3rd ODI in Hamilton. Yeah, go away you stupidly good at cricket South Africans, shooooo.

While South Africa basically got the perfect warm up tour for the World Cup, the Black Caps are left with more questions left unanswered. I said at the start of the tour that we shouldn't take the result too seriously, it was about the combos, selection headaches and individual performances.

Hence we still have many questions left unanswered as well as a whole lot a new questions.

Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson need to find some form. We can't carry 2 out of form all rounders, especially when we have specialists who at the very least deserve a chance to show what they got. Anderson logged scores of 0 and 1 in this series. He's not alone but just be weary of the need for our all rounders to be playing well.

That leads to us still not really knowing who our opening pair in ODI's are. Neesham logged scores of 16 and 10 at the top of the innings, which in turn highlights Martin Guptill's lack of runs and awkwardness at the crease.

I like Matt Henry, is he better option with the ball than either Anderson or Neesham? Yes, but if Anderson and Neesham are getting runs then it doesn't matter. Ya feel me?

I also really like Nathan McCullum. I can't back it up with stats because he didn't pick up any wickets in his 6 overs yesterday, but he's severely underrated. He's gone from one of those offies who just keeps it tight, not a whole lot of spin just darting it in to someone with flight, turn and accuracy. Be prepared for McCullum to get selected over Daniel Vettori, just be prepared ... don't have a cry when it happens.

CAN WE PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT JESSE RYDER! Who cares! Ryder wants to play for the Black Caps, but we shouldn't be building a circus of hype. That will only lead to mountains of negativity should the Black Caps and Ryder under perform. Perfect situation would be Ryder doing what he's doing, head down working hard with the Black Caps closely monitoring him in private. This idea of Ryder as the saviour is being built up and it's not good, not good for Ryder, not good for the Black Caps and not good for the public who are being fed ideas of Ryder being a super hero.
