Black Caps Black Book ... /Diary - Winnerz

The Black Caps notched their first win of this ODI series against Pakistan thanks to a solid performance from some young quicks and a job-doing effort from the willow wielders.

Matt Henry, Adam Milne and Mitchell McClenaghan are in a pretty intense battle for a few World Cup spots, but their collective performance was extremely encouraging. There were still too many freebies, pressure releasing deliveries that got dispatched to the boundary or allowed the batsmen to rotate the strike, but on the whole it was great to watch.

Henry was the star man with 4/45 off 10 and I like his bowling the mostest. He's either bowling back of a length, cramping the batsmen up or he's bowling a probing length with some swing and seam movement. We cream our undies when Adam Milne gets up around 150km/h but Henry trundles in and bowls around 142km/h which is quick enough, especially with his natural length which hits the splice of the bat.

Milne and Big Mitch were impressive as well and they all seem to be able to execute the plans asked of them. Like I said, they still bowled a few too many loosie goosie deliveries but wickets ... cricket is all about wickets and they took 9 between them so chur.

To confuse me even more, both Dean Brownlie and Anton Devcich got runs. Do I honestly see either of these two lads opening the innings in a World Cup final? No, but they're more than welcome to smash the door down and demand selection. Peep how easy Kane Williamson made it all look as well, coming in after the openers do their job is a much better scenario for Williamson and it showed. He is the perfect batsmen to come in ideally after the 15th over, as he can knock it around with the field spread.

Luke Ronchi is the king of finishing an innings.

The guys who performed - Henry, Big Mitch, Milne, Brownlie and Devcich are all on the fringe. As a New Zealand cricket fan, there's nothing better than seeing these lads stand up and say "what's up!?"
