Black Caps Black Book .../Diary - Run It Straight
Don't dwell on all the run outs. They looked horrible with an icky lack of communication and showed what looked to be a bit of arrogance from the Black Caps. They hit a few straight to the fielders and thought there was run. Clearly that's dumb and in international cricket you expect fielders to make you pay, as Sri Lanka did.
But it's no biggie and won't happen again, so chill.
What is a bit of a biggie is the hole that Brendon McCullum's continual awesomeness covers over. Sure the run outs made a meal out of our middle order but once again the top order largely failed with Martin Guptill, Tom Latham and Ross Taylor all struggling to score. It's definitely not panic stations yet, but the Black Caps need other contributions at the top of the order, asap.
B-Mac has showed his class by carrying on his top shelf form, so has Kane Williamson but Taylor hasn't really been able to kick on. We need Taylor at his best and hopefully we'll see him somewhere near it in the next few games.
Those run outs, shit I'm dwelling ... but I'm dwelling in a different house because they just highlighted how important it is to have some tail enders who can contribute with the bat. Those run outs could easily have been Dale Steyn running through our middle order, or Ravi Ashwin doing the same and so it was awesome to see the likes of Adam Milne, Matt Henry and Trent Boult push the total up over 200. That can be the difference ya know.
Ah, but Matt Henry.
Our best bowler yesterday isn't even the World Cup squad. Hmm.
No need to dwell as we have to back the brains trust, at least we've got Henry in the Stable right!?
I have one issue with Daniel Vettori and that's his lack of punch. My love for the fact that he can be relied on to tie and end up far out-weighs his lack of wickets and this is more about the other bowlers doing more damage. Vettori's role is just to charge through overs quietly and not get smacked, which means he needs whoever is bowling from the other end to continue to build pressure and take wickets.
Trent Boult has gone wicketless and has been expensive in the first two ODI's. Adam Milne has been good, albeit a little inconsistent, Nate-dawg McCullum has take two wickets in two games and Corey Anderson has bowled 16 overs for 1 wicket and 81 runs. Danny V just needs a bit more support.
Everyone needs to remember that this is Sri Lanka's best group of cricketers. They're bloody good and so are the other top dawgs who will be at the World Cup, which is great for cricket fans but many Black Caps fans have quickly gone from one extreme to the other. They now reckon international cricket is easy.
Tomorrow, the lads will be back in action but I want to see Sri Lanka once again put in a strong performance. That's what I want because it's what the Black Caps need, they need to respond under pressure and put their plans in to action as well as execute their roles against players of the highest quality.
