BLACKCAPS In Australia. Third Test. Adelaide. Day Two

Yeah, on ya bike mate.

In a Test that is breaking new ground, descending/ascending into uncharted territory, it wasn't the rather new technology that provided the most controversial moment of the first two days (... or the whole Test series so far) but one of the already established ones. With Australia teetering on the brink, Nathan Lyon caught a top edge up onto his shoulder which was then caught and thus given not out. Fair play, that's what technology is for right?

Correct. Technology, hot-spot specifically, showed a mark on Lyon's bat and Lyon did this...

Some humans could see the mark, but one and the most important one couldn't. Not out.

The next hour or so that followed was nothing less than torture. Imagine how pissed off you were sitting at home watching Lyon flay his bat around and then Mitchell Starc prancing around on one leg whacking sixes for fun. Shit balls.

Imagine being the players though. Athletes can't dwell on moments like that which ooze silliness but are out of your control. The players would have experienced that same frustration as you or I, the difference being that there is the next ball to worry about.

How do we get Lyon out?

How do we stop these runs leaking?

It's not too often that blunders like that from match-officials have such an impact on the game. Unfortunately this was the case here and, as they players tell us all the time, "we must control what we can control".

Right now, BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner are at the crease and the BLACKCAPS are 116/5. Far from ideal, yet exactly what we've come to expect after two days of this day/night Test cricket. The Australian bowlers did what the kiwi bowlers did earlier in the day with swing and seam taking wickets, it's always fun when the ball's nibbling around.

I won't bore you with each wicket and have settled on two thoughts: Mitchell Santner's swag and a Mitchell Starc-less Aussie attack.

Santer bowled Josh Hazlewood, picking up his first Test wicket in the process. I've been impressed by Santner so far as he's showcased some nice flight in towards the right-handers' pads and he spins the ball ... kinda like a young Daniel Vettori. Santner's presence and the way he's bowled could change the very make-up of this BLACKCAPS team in the future, an idea I'll explore after this Test, and Santner's wicket was well deserved. He also deserved to give Hazlewood some kind words after his off-stick was rattled, instead he offered a cheeky 'oh what? You're bowled' look. Lovely.

Santner now has a big opportunity to show off his batting ability. He can defend and bat out time or he can play shots and score quickly, either way he's in the spotlight.

Hazlewood has figures of 32/3 and Mitchell Marsh has 44/2 in this second innings after many kiwis were giddy at the prospect of a Starc-less bowling attack. On this pitch, having these two along with Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon is enough to take the remaining five wickets and Starc's absence won't be so important #JustSayin.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's a Sunday. Go out, do your shit that you've gotta do and plant your backside in front of the telly later this afternoon; you'll witness some fun cricket.
