Black Caps Black Book ... /Diary - Test Cricket
Let's all say a collective 'later bo' to the Cricket World Cup, go on.
While some basking in a second place was nice, we need to look forward with the Black Caps because their ability and mindset of this group can take them to heights unseen. The Test side has a core group of cricketers who have the ability to be the best in the world, have no doubt about that but they have a long way to go and this England series will be a great challenge.
The man of the hour is Hamish Rutherford who despite his great ability to wave his bat without much regard outside his off-stump will once again get a chance. I like loyalty so in a sense it's difficult to really rip these selections but you've got to wonder what more someone like Jeet Raval must do to atleast get a squad selection. Raval scored 876 runs in this year's Plunket Shield and has averaged over 40 in all but one of his seven seasons playing first class cricket.
But personally, it doesn't really matter what Rutherford's up to because my opening pair would be Martin Guptill and Tom Latham.
It would have been nice to see a bit of a longer vision, why do we need to carry Luke Ronchi? Let's use these series to get fresh faces in the squad, all that young player has to do is back up BJ Watling and get a taste of international cricket so it would have been nice to see someone like Brad Cachopa or Derek de Border get a squad spot.
Having a large pace attack that I'm struggling to find much wrong with, means that Mark Craig will be the only certified spinner for the two Tests. This will be very interesting to see how Craig goes in England against what will be a high quality batting unit who have faced many an offspinner in their conditions. I'm not all in on Craig just yet, he's had a few nice series but I don't thing we've seen him put under pressure and how he can respond. Respect won't come easy for Craig's offies, so we'll get a good chance to see him in tough spots in England.
Two spinners or one spinner? Well they've gone the pace route so they can only really carry one spinner which is fine as England offers some juicy movement for our typical kiwi bowlers. Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner, Doug Bracewell and Matt Henry are the stable, and it's a bloody good stable that should have kiwi cricket fans excited.
With the core Test side being rather settled, I would have loved to have seen a few ballsy selections because there's no better time to do so. Rutherford will be under the microscope, but what's if he doesn't even play? You might as well take someone like Will Young along for the ride as he'll be a Black Cap at some stage.
A month or so out from the first Test, it's definitely the batting that has be a bit on edge. England, despite the shit storm that has surrounded them lately are still a fairly good Test side and in their conditions that favour the new ball and good, sound, patient pace bowling will serve up a massive challenge for our batsmen. Especially as our batsmen have all performed well at home, we need to see them under fire overseas.
