World T20: BLACKCAPS And White Ferns Warmin' Up
Left-handed, down on his right knee, hitting right-handed #Manu
Exciting times as we gear up for the World T20 and Women's World T20 in India. Both the BLACKCAPS and White Ferns have enjoyed a few much needed warm up games, with the BLACKCAPS beating Sri Lanka and losing to England while the Ferns have lost two games to England.
Reading too much into these warm up games is foolish - hence I wasn't overly excited about the BLACKCAPS win over Sri Lanka - as they are nothing more than warm up games but here's what happened any way.
I'll start with the Ferns, who set England 131 to win in their first game. Suzie Bates continues to enjoy her fine form as she hit 38 off 43 while Sophie Devine top-scored with 40 off 42, Amy Satterthwaite also chipped in with 22 off 14.
England chased 131 down, using all of their 20 overs. Lea Tahuhu took 2/10 off her 4 overs and Bates again showed her tremendous value with 2/22 off 3 overs. Thamsyn Newton and Satterthwaite took a wicket each, leaving England 6 wickets down.
Game two had England batting first, setting the Ferns 127 to win. Leigh Kasperek didn't play in game one and showed her value with 4/12 off 3.2 overs and Felicity Leydon-Davis, who also didn't play in game one, was the other major wicket-taker with 3/19 off 3 overs.
The Ferns could only manage 106 in reply, Devine top-scored with 31 off 20.
From those two games, I reckon the Ferns' strongest team includes: Suzie Bates, Rachel Priest, Sara McGlashan, Amy Satterthwaite, Sophie Devine, Katie Perkins, Leigh Kasperek and Lea Tahuhu.
This leaves three bowling spots up for grabs and it's good to see the likes of Newton (20-year old/right-arm seam) and Leydon-Davis (21/right-arm seam) stating their cases while the Ferns need their spinners to start doing the trick with Erin Bermingham, Morna Nielsen and Anna Peterson all going wicket-less in these two games.
Next up for the Ferns is their WWT20 opener against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Delhi.
The BLACKCAPS set Sri Lanka 227 to win with Martin Guptill hitting 41 off 25, Colin Munro 67 off 34 and Corey Anderson 60 off 29. Grant Elliott closed the innings nicely with 36 off 21.
They then bowled Sri Lanka out for 152 with Adam Milne taking 3/26 off 4 overs, Ish Sodhi 2/19 off 3 overs while Tim Southee and Corey Anderson both picked up a wicket each.
England beat the BLACKCAPS, chasing down 170 in 19.2 overs. Kane Williamson top-scored with 63 off 39 as no other kiwi batsman scored over 19 runs. Mitchell Santner (2/24 off 4) and Nathan McCullum (2/25 off 4) were the only wicket-takers for the kiwis.
Here are some notes...
Mitchell McClenaghan went wicket-less in both games, going at 10.66 and 11 runs-an-over in either game.
Who will make up the spin attack? Sodhi picked up 2 wickets against Sri Lanka but didn't play against England as McCullum and Santner then both took 2 wickets.
Maybe there is space for all three spinners as Southee and Tent Boult both went wicket-less against England, conceding 9.9 and 9 runs-an-over. Southee took 1/25 off 4 against Sri Lanka.
The win over Sri Lanka got kiwi media excited, however the BLACKCAPS failed against England's spin with leggy Adil Rashid taking 3/15 off 4 overs and Moeen Ali taking 1/30 off 4 - both spinners were England's cheapest bowlers.
As for a strongest BLACKCAPS batting line up? Who knows. I like the look of Guptill, Williamson, Munro, Anderson, Elliott, Santner and Ronchi from the game against Sri Lanka with Henry Nicholls and Ross Taylor coming in to face England. Nicholls socred 14 off 13 while Taylor finished on 19* but that came off 20 balls.
Taking the batting line up from the Sri Lankan game, I'd wanna see a bowling attack that includes Southee, Milne, Sodhi and McCullum.
The concern is that the BLACKCAPS now face India on Tuesday in Nagpur after two vastly different warm up games. India are coming off victory in the Asia Cup, smoked the West Indies and just lost to South Africa ... who suffered a series loss to Australia, who the BLACKCAPS also face in the group stages.
