Kiwi County Cricket Tour #6
Cricket is sexy.
If you peep outside your local sporting bubble, you'll see a host of kiwis doing great things (aka kiwis flying) around the world. I mean, Steven Adams is doing as well as he's ever done in the NBA and Winston Reid scored the winner for West Ham against Manchester United in West Ham's last game before they switch stadiums. There's more, but those two lads are leading the way but a few of our cricketers aren't too far away as the runs and wickets keep flowing on the Kiwi County Cricket Tour.
Lancashire vs Hampshire
We'll start with everyone's favourite left-arm steamer in Neil Wagner. Waggy's Lancashire had a very solid win over Hampshire, winning by an innings and 94 runs and while Wagner wasn't the star of the show, as I said last week he doesn't really need to be as the Lancs have a strong bowling attack.
Lancashire bowled first with Wagner used as a fourth option, only bowling 9 overs but he chipped in nicely with 2/20 including the wicket of former England opener Michael Carberry.
Hampshire were rolled for 109 and Lancs then went on to snatch a lead, with Wagner's 37 off 30 balls contributing to Lancashire's 456. Hampshire could then only manage 253, with Wagner going wicketless through 21 overs while spinner Simon Kerrigan did most of the damage with 5/59.
James Anderson will join the England Test team soon, which should open the door for more opportunities for Wagner. Anderson took 3 wickets in either innings, so there's going to be a void that needs filling and Wagner's a nice option as he's taken wickets in four of six innings.
Neil Wagner: 2/30, 37, 0/68.
Middlesex vs Nottinghamshire
At Lord's, Middlesex and Nottinghamshire played out a draw with James Franklin returning to the Middlesex line up as captain. There were only two days on play in London, with Franklin bowling 12 overs without a wicket for 45 runs and he was then left in the sheds as the next batsmen padded up with Middlesex on 203 in reply to Notts' 254.
Not much to report here, besides the return of Franklin who must be held in high esteem at Middlesex. He skippered in this game, was a fourth option with the ball and was due to come in at No.6 with the bat.
James Franklin: 0/45.
Warwickshire vs Somerset
Another draw and another game in which there were only two days of play as Jeetan Patel's Warwickshire hosted Somerset (featuring the veteran opener Marcus Trescothick). Patel could only manage the single wicket for the match as he rolled through 11 overs for 51 runs and 7 overs, 1/21.
The seamers did the trick for both teams and Warwickshire are able to call on Chris Woakes and Boyd Rankin, two sporadically international seamers. Somerset batted first, scoring 295 and Warwickshire responded with 152 as our Jeetz held things down batting at No.11 scoring 9*. Somerset were then dismissed for 178, giving Warwickshire 322 runs to chase and only 4 overs were bowled in that chase.
Jeetz hasn't taken County cricket by storm so far, but he looks like he could be on track for another 50 wicket season as he's taken at least a wicket in all four games so far. Jeetz also took 2/37 and scored 3* in a T20 game for Warwickshire's 2nd XI.
Derbyshire vs Sussex
Wait, what do we have here? Another draw? And unfortunately, it's neither Hamish Rutherford or Neil Broom who were are celebrating this week, both continued their lean patch of form for Derbyshire. Derbyshire hosted Sussex featuring Ross Taylor with Derbyshire batting first.
Rutherford was caught on 32 and Broom had his stumps skittled on 10 as Derbyshire could only manage 191 from 68 overs. Despite a double hundy and a century from the two batsmen ahead of him, Taylor was sent back to the sheds on 6, unfortunate for him but no biggie in the scheme of things as Sussex went on to score 468 declared. Only 26.3 overs were bowled in Derbyshire's second effort with the bat, enough overs for Rutherford to be dismissed for a duck. In fact that was plenty of time as Rutherford only faced the one ball.
Broom has only been able to pass 10 runs in an innings once in four games as he's got off to a slow start in his Kiwi County Tour.
Hamish Rutherford: 32, 0.
Neil Broom: 10.
Ross Taylor: 6.
Glamorgan vs Worcestershire
In Cardiff, Mitchell Santner played his first game of the Kiwi County Tour as he turned out for Worcestershire. Worcs and Glamorgan played out a draw, once again with no play on the last two days and Santner actually ended up taking Matt Henry's place in the Worcs' side.
Santner was able to show what he can do with the bat, coming in at No.8 with Worcs in a strong position after a double hundy, hundy and half-century from their top order. Santner hit 23 off 35 balls, helping Worcs reach 456 before declaring and unfortunately that was all we got to see from Santner as Glamorgan only got to face 20 overs in their innings, stranded on 42/2 and Santner didn't get a bowl.
Mitchell Santner: 23.
Kent vs Gloucestershire
Tom Latham's Kent came up against Gloucestershire, including Hamish Marshall and Kieran Noema-Barnett and even though this one ended in a draw with only three of four innings played, that was enough time for our kiwi lads to stamp their mark on the contest.
Gloucs batted first and their top four batsmen combined for only 9 runs, leaving Marshall to come in at No.5 and restore some respectability to their innings. Marshall hit 112, giving him back to back centuries and four games in a row where Marshall has scored at least a half-century in the game. Marshall was caught by Latham and Noema-Barnett came in at No.7 and was bowled on 24, Gloucs all out for 337.
Latham must think County cricket is a breeze and how he's slotted into his work with Kent so far shows that Latham is keen take his game further, especially as a BLACKCAPS opener. Despite a few ducks either side of him, Latham scored 90 before he was caught and bowled by Noema-Barnett - which was Noema-Barnett's only wicket for the innings. Latham's 90 helped Kent reach 478, a handy lead but a lead that wouldn't be too much of a factor with the match ending with Gloucs 211/8 in their second dig.
Marshall was only able to score 20 while Noema-Barnett scored 11 in that second dig.
Hamish Marshall: 112, 20.
Kieran Noema-Barnett: 24, 1/65 off 26 overs, 11.
Tom Latham: 90.
