White Ferns x WBBL02: Update #5

5-for with a hatty, she's Amy Satty.

As we near the end of the WBBL02, the contributions from our White Ferns are drying up. Here's how the White Ferns x WBBL02 table looks...

Sara McGlashan (Sixers) - 16 pts.
Suzie Bates (Scorchers) - 14 pts.
Amy Satterthwaite (Hurricanes) - 13 pts.
Morna Nielsen (Stars) - 12 pts.
Lea Tahuhu/Rachel Priest (Renegades) - 9.5 pts.
Sophie Devine (Strikers) - 8 pts.

Sara McGlashan

With a win and a one-over eliminator loss, Sara McGlashan's Sydney Sixers are still leading the WBBL02 even if their eliminator loss did come in the Sydney derby. First up was a win over Hobart Hurricanes and McGlashan did what she has kinda done all WBBL02 as she chipped in with 16 off 18 balls, allowing for the guns at the top of the order (Ellyse Perry with 60 off 54) to lead the way.

In the eliminator loss to Sydney Thunder, McGlashan once again came in at No.4 with the Sixers batting first and contributed strongly as she hit 30 off 31 balls. With an average of 22.10 and a 95.25sr, McGlashan certainly isn't dominating the WBBL02 but she is doing her job perfectly and there's no complaints when you're playing a role in the leading team. The Sixers simply don't need McGlashan to turn in star performances because they have Perry as the 3rd highest run-scorer, Ashleigh Gardner in 4th and Alyssa Healy  in 8th; that's the top-three batswomen of the Sixers line up, No.4 is McGlashan and she's ranked 20th.

Bat: 12 inns, 221 runs @22.10avg/95.25sr, ranked 20th in runs (up 1).

Suzie Bates

While Perth climbed from 4th to 2nd with back to back wins, by Suzie Bates' lofty standards with bat and ball, she contributed next to nothing; as long as the team is winning though right? Bates went wicket-less but only conceded 4.25rpo in the win over Adelaide before she was caught lbw for just 2, she was then dismissed for 8 and conceded 7rpo without a wicket in the win over Melbourne Stars.

If this wasn't Bates, then it wouldn't be such a drama and that is countered by the fact that the Scorchers won both games. Bates has slipped from 10th in runs to 15th and from 9th to 12th in wickets, although she has seen a slight drop in her bowling rpo that now has her sitting at a very handy 6.60rpo.

Bat: 12 inns, 230 runs @20.90avg/91.11sr, ranked 15th in runs (down 4).
Ball: 12 inns, 10 wickets @26.10avg/6.60rpo, ranked 12 in wickets (down 3)

Amy Satterthwaite

Apart from a monumental 5-for, Amy Satterthwaite has also been fairly quiet by her standards in a loss to the Sixers and a win over the Thunder. Satterthwaite went for 9rpo with the ball and didn't snatch a wicket before she was bowled for 1 against the Sixers, but she then bounced back strongly with 5/17 against the Thunder, conceding just 4.25rpo.

With an average and strike-rate of 49avg/106.98, Satterthwaite is still amongst the best batswomen in the WBBL02, but her impressive off-spinning performance has seen her rise from 15th in wickets to 7th. Remember that Satterthwaite has only played 10 games while everyone ranked ahead of her in wickets has played 11 or 12 games.

Bat: 10 inns, 245 runs @49avg/106.98sr, ranked 11th in runs (down 3).
Ball: 10 inns, 13 wickets @17.61avg/6.36rpo, ranked 7th in wickets (up 8)
.

Morna Nielsen

See this content in the original post

Not much to report from our incredibly stingey spinner Morna Nielsen, as her Melbourne Stars beat Adelaide and then lost to Perth with Nielsen not scoring many runs or taking any wickets. Nielsen was out for a first-ball duck against Adelaide and then put up 3* against Perth batting No.10. Although she didn't take a wicket in these two games, Nielsen did prove to be incredibly difficult to score off as she conceded just 4.50rpo against Adelaide and 5rpo against Perth.

Ball: 12 inns, 6 wickets @35.83avg/6.05rpo, ranked 30th in wickets (down 8).

Lea Tahuhu/Rachel Priest

The struggles of Melbourne Renegades and their White Ferns duo continue, although we did see Rachel Priest enjoy a nice knock in the second of their two games against Brisbane. The first game saw Priest hit just 2, while Lea Tahuhu went without a wicket and conceded 5.33rpo. Tahuhu backed that up with a similar performance in which she conceded 5.25rpo without a wicket, before Priest helped the Renegades chase a victory with 44 off 39 balls to snatch a rain-affected win.

Priest (bat): 12 inns, 219 runs @18.25avg/100.92sr, ranked 21 in runs.
Tahuhu (ball): 12 inns, 8 wickets @30.87avg/5.48rpo, ranked 20th in wickets.

Sophie Devine

Last time around, I said that Adelaide would require a return to major contributions from Sophie Devine if they had any hope of salvaging their WBBL02 tournament. Unfortunately for Adelaide and Devine, she could only muster scores of 17 and 10 in their back to back losses while she went without a wicket in both games, conceding 7rpo and 8rpo.

Bat: 8 inns, 270 runs @45avg/136.36sr, ranked 7th in runs (down 1).

This weekend marks the last round of games before the finals get underway on Tuesday with a semi-final on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. See you on Monday where we'll hopefully see a few more runs and wickets from our White Ferns as their WBBL02 teams chase a finals spot.
