2022/23 Women's Super Smash: Update #2

Women's Super Smash is flowing along with the second update zoning in on the two undefeated teams in Wellington and Canterbury. Each update will zone in on a few key ideas for teams that have a wee break in the schedule, so expect plenty of Otago information in the next update as well as any other notable performances.

Last summer Wellington dominate the wicket-taking charts...

  • Leigh Kasperek: 1st - 20w @ 9.35avg/4.98rpo

  • Jess Kerr: 2nd - 18w @ 8.44avg/4.75rpo

  • Amelia Ker: 3rd - 17w @ 11.29avg/4.57rpo

  • Xara Jetly: 8th - 13w @ 10.38avg/4.65rpo

  • Maneka Singh: 13th - 10w @ 14.8avg/4.93rpo

Wellington's bowlers are once again dominating with the ball...

  • Jess Kerr: 1st - 6w @ 8.66avg/6.5rpo

  • Leigh Kasperek: 2nd - 5w @ 6.8avg/4.25rpo

  • Xara Jetly: 3rd - 4w @ 9.75avg/5.57rpo

  • Amelia Kerr: 11th - 2w @ 23.5avg/5.87rpo

Wellington should be mandatory viewing for wahine cricket fans as they consistently execute funky skills. With the ball Wellington have spinners moving deliveries either way and J-Kerr appears to be bowling with extra zip, unleashing variations to go with her steady in-duckers. The growth of Jetly is something to keep track of as she has a career record of 11avg/5rpo and this is her third season in a row with an average below 12.

Same vibe with Wellington's batting and for those who haven't been tuned in, A-Kerr is a world-class batter capable of dominating Super Smash. Wellington's bowling unit is so good that they don't need A-Kerr leading their mahi and along with the class of Green, these two have ensured that Sophie Devine's absence is all good.

Wellington have five batters with strike-rates over 100. Kasperek is shining in a slugging role down the order with 42 runs @ 150sr and her all-round excellence could strengthen her case for White Ferns selection. This highlights Wellington's biggest issue as they may be too good with Devine, the Kerr sisters, Green, Rebecca Burns, Georgina Plimmer and Kasperek all in the White Ferns mixer. Most will depart Super Smash before finals.

Canterbury probably won't have that issue with Amy Satterthwaite and she is yet to be dismissed in three innings this season; 49*, 73* and 50*.

Canterbury have also built a solid batting line up to support Satterthwaite, without Frances Mackay. Kate Anderson is opening for Canterbury (113.88sr) alongside Natalie Cox (96.29sr). Laura Hughes (120.68sr) has been bumped up the order, allowing Canterbury to attack the first few overs and then Satterthwaite can adapt to how the innings is flowing.

This is low key boosted by the emergence of Izzy Sharp who missed the first game and then played against Auckland with 17 runs @ 106.25sr. A quick search of Sharp's background outlines her athletic prowess and her multi-sport excellence is evident in her powerful strokes.

Sharp is in her second season of HBJ Shield and the 18-year-old made her Super Smash debut against Auckland. While many wahine batters have grabbed higher honours or development contracts with batting averages below 15, Sharp's started her List-A career with two seasons averaging over 20 and she has a LA strike-rate of 98.8.

Sharp’s development will could amplify Canterbury's batting mahi. Canterbury want to attack with the top-order and this is strengthened by having Sharp batting around the same time as Satterthwaite. Sharp has already shown her power and as youngsters rarely dominate via consistency, Sharp has a lovely opportunity to focus on quick runs in a strong batting unit.
