Blackcaps vs UAE T20I Series Debrief

Blackcaps continue to build towards the ODI World Cup after a 2-1 T20I series win over United Arab Emirates. Next are T20I and ODI series against England with lots of changes in the various squads as Aotearoa's cricketing depth continues to brew in overseas tours. Blackcaps are now 7-5 in T20Is this year heading into the England tour while their ODI record sits at 5-8 which stems from series defeats in India then Pakistan with 2nd 11 groups.

Here is a breakdown of how players performed against UAE with players grouped by the number of games they played...

Three Games

  • Mark Chapman: 3inns, 129 runs @ 43avg/134sr

  • Tim Seifert: 3inns, 75 runs @ 25avg/147sr

  • Rachin Ravindra: 3inns, 23 runs @ 23avg/144sr | 1ov @ 8rpo

  • Mitchell Santner: 3inns, 23 runs @ 11.5avg/128sr | 11ov, 4w @ 17.2avg/6.2rpo

  • Chad Bowes: 3inns, 30 runs @ 10avg/97sr

  • Tim Southee: 11.4ov, 6w @ 13.5avg/6.9rpo

  • Kyle Jamieson: 9.4ov, 3w @ 24.3avg/7.5rpo

  • Ben Lister: 9ov, 3w @ 25.3avg/8.4rpo

Two Games

  • James Neesham: 2inns, 46 runs @ 23avg/118sr | 6ov, 2w @ 19.5avg/6.5rpo

  • Cole McConchie: 2inns, 40 runs @ 40avg/105sr | 3ov @ 11rpo

  • Dane Cleaver: 2inns, 4 runs @ 2avg/50sr

One Game

  • Will Young: 1inns, 56 runs @ 56avg/122sr

  • Dean Foxcroft: 1inns, 4 runs @ 133sr

  • Adithya Ashok: 4ov, 1w @ 28avg/7rpo

Debutants Foxcroft and Ashok only played the last game along with Young. Neesham, McConchie and Cleaver played the first two games. Despite playing all three games, Ravindra only bowled 1ov and this offers some intrigue moving forward as Ravindra is in both squads to face England.

Lister's consistent selection as a lefty seamer also stands out. While playing just one ODI, Lister has now gathered 10 T20I games with a solid record of 30.6avg/8.7rpo to start his career. Lister has a strong T20 career record of 27avg/8.2rpo and while he drops out of the Blackcaps touring party, there is steady growth on display in a role where Aotearoa doesn't have much depth.

Of the other departing players, Bowes and Cleaver haven't quite snapped up their opportunities. Cleaver had scores of 4 and 0 which can be packaged with the end of the domestic summer for no 50+ scores in Cleaver's last 10 games. Cleaver has a T20I record of 20.3avg/121sr and this is slightly beter than Bowes, who had scores of 0, 21 and 9 which takes him to 17avg/120sr in his T20I career.

Chapman once again dominated a T20I series and while not quite commanding World Cup squad selection just yet, Chapman is making a stronger case. As noted in the Monday newsletter, Chapman's excellent T20I mahi this year (53.5avg/145sr) drops down to 23.6avg/113sr in ODIs and he still sits behind Young in the ODI batting ranks, as well as other all-rounders such as Ravindra and Neesham.

Chapman barely bowls these days so he's not in this all-rounder group. Chapman is in the T20I squad to face England and if he continues to whack boundaries in the middle order against high quality opposition, that would offer another reinforcing nudge for his World Cup selection case.

Jamieson's workload is another pocket to keep track of. Only Southee and Santner bowled more overs than Jamieson against UAE. Jamieson is also in the midst of his best year of T20I bowling and is on track to bowl the most overs of his three years in T20I cricket. Jamieson hasn't played an ODI this year but 2022 was his best year of ODI bowling and the ODI series against England could feature Jamieson bowling the most ODI overs of his career this year.
