World T20: White Ferns Off To A Flyer

While the BLACKCAPS batted first and then tightened the screws on India with the ball, the White Ferns bowled first and did a fine job in restricting Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka got off to a hot start with Yasoda Mendis and Dilani Manodara both hitting 30s with strike-rates over 100, however the Ferns fought back strongly. Sri Lanka's first three batswomen scored 84 of the team's 110 runs with the Ferns keeping the rest of the batting line up check.

As has been the case recently, Leigh Kasperek's off-spin did the trick for the Ferns. Kasperek picked up opener Chamari Atapattu for 17 in the 7th over to swing some momentum back the way of the Ferns and finished with 2/19 off her 4 overs. Lea Tahuhu, Amy Satterthwaite and Suze Bates also picked up a wicket each while Morna Nielsen, who was the other spinner in the Ferns' bowling attack didn't take a wicket but she was the most economical bowler, going at only 4.5 runs-an-over.

The Ferns chased down Sri Lanka's total in only 15.5 overs thanks to a strong display from the key batswomen. Suzies Bates continues to score runs for fun and she got the Ferns off to a swift start as she hit 37 off 37 balls, Bates and Rachel Priest put together an opening partnership of 64 which quickly took the game away from Sri Lanka.

Sophie Devine was run-out for 7, the only 'failure' of the innings for the Ferns as Sara McGlashan and Amy Satterthwaite guided them home. McGlashan and Satterthwaite both showed just how talented the Ferns' batting line up is, with McGlashan's 21 coming off only 14 balls while Satterthwaite hit 13 off 13.

This was our first look at how coach Haidee Tiffin is thinking with regards to her team selections and I love the look of this playing 11. The batting line up was expected, with the only real bit of funk coming in who would make up the bowling attack and the Ferns rolled out a side that was fairly similar to the BLACKCAPS' who faced India as the all-round abilities of Bates, Devine and Satterthwaite gives the Ferns the luxury of batting deep.

Nielsen and Kasperek benefit from this as both spinners were selected and in India, these two will be crucial moving forward. The fact that the Ferns have six bowlers all capable of bowling their full stack of overs gives captain Bates options that she can juggle on the fly as well.
