Flatbush Zombies + The Underachievers = Clockwork Indigo
Clockwork Indigo, a match made in heaven and a mixtape that kinda blew my mind to be honest. There's some musical projects that I make a note of on the old calender, there's others that just happen. There's something magical in the ones that just happen, you have no idea what to expect or any preconceived ideas heading in to your first listen.
You know that Flatbush Zombies and the Underachievers are pretty similar in their music and ideas, they knew of each other before they started making them big tunes. Clockwork Indigo was something that was inevitable, yet there were still many surprises.
So there's 3 guys in the Zombies - Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Elliot, there's 2 in the Underachievers - AK and Issa Gold. 5 rappers all up and the beauty is that they all serve up their own brand of fire. When listening you kinda tune in to the rappers spitting at that time and then switch to 'who's next'? Everyone has a distinguishable voice, a unique sound and so you're able to quickly gauge who it is and sit back and admire.
There's only 5 tracks, which is awesome. It's hard hitting, equal parts psychedelic and violence. They simply don't give a fuck and spit bars that could incite riots yet put you back on your ass and get you thinking. It starts with 'Butterfly Effect'. An eerie beat is matched with a penetrating drum by Erick (he produces and raps, definitely top 5 producer/rapper combo guy at the moment) which allows the crew to flex their muscle.
Hold up, I'm beast and I cannot be tamed
Remember when we were starvin', dreams was tarnished
Hoping one day we'd be ballin', ain't that all us?
Now we done it, use your brain and never forfeit
Now I talk how I'm livin' with conscious
Good intentions, flawless karma
And this mission keeps us stronger
Fight for the day we be peaceful and honest
AK - Butterfly Effect
Both 'LUAM' and 'XYNO' zone in on the joys of being a rap star. If you're not ready for the dark themes, dark sounds and rather graphic rhymes, then I'm not sure that this is for you. Both these tracks keep the vibe going throughout and serve as platforms for the guys to show that they have definitely carved out their own niche - top shelf rhymes, word play and flow cross with fresh, dark and original ideas.
If you an insight of the life of a Clockwork Indigo artist, 'Benefit Concert' is the best track because they smack you in the face with the insight. Anytime rappers want to have mosh pits at their concerts, I get excited. There's something about mixing the spirits of hip hop and rock n' roll that just make me get a stiffy and Clockwork just want you to get wild, like really wild and have some fun. Again, Erick serves up the funkiest riot inducing beat I've ever heard.
'System' is probably my favourite jam. I'm assuming it's called 'System' because it closely resembles the great band System Of A Down. Yeah, that's right they rap all over this track that sounds like SOAD are in the studio plucking strings and hitting drums. From my research SOAD didn't do anything for this song, which is even more awesome as it's produced by Erick!
Generation X, we up next, no Khaled we the best
Future looking strong like we gonna recruit Lebron
And the other four players, Jordon, Magic, Bird and John
Stockton, my shooters locked in, gunning for top wins
Issa Gold - System
I've had this all on repeat for the last few days, which is kinda weird as there's only 5 songs which results in having to press go over and over again on your music playing device. I've had some good times listening to this whether it being listening to it in the dark, having my own little party, whether it's on the bus getting me in the zone to go dominate shit or just kicking back getting my think on. It's awesome and while there's many other hip hop artists dominating the game, Clockwork Indigo and their individual parts are dominating their lane. They're also heading for domination of hip hop and music in general.
