A few thoughts on Chuck Inglish's Convertables

First of all, who is Chuck Inglish? Well Chuck is one half of the Cool Kids (along with Mikey Rocks) which might sound familiar to some of you, they were the swagged out homies before swag around 2007/08. They were pretty stylish and their music aligned with that idea and they were pretty well known. Probably a bit to young and hip for you old school hip hop heads but not young enough for the new breed to know to much about. They're both from Chicago.

'Convertables' is Chuck's follow up project to 'Droptop', however it's a bit longer and more albumy than the Droptop EP. Born in Detroit, Michigan you can see where Inglish's love for cars comes from and he preached in an interview that you should always listen to music in a car before you judge it.

That's where my admiration for Convertables comes in to play. Because Chuck produces all the music, it's his ear guiding the project. All the sounds you hear have a definite purpose. Whether it be the booming drums that would sound orgasmic in a car with a much better sound system than my shitbox or the variety of synths, strings and horns. Like most of the best producers going around, Inglish uses live instruments to get the sound and boy does it make a difference. The result is an album that sounds like nothing else. It has enough funk to keep your head noddin' but is simple enough to host some nice rhymes.

Each song is a step along the journey of the album. It's like you turn a corner and hear something new, fresh but equally stimulating with each song.

Chuck Inglish is someone who works best rapping over his own beats. He knows every little thing about the beat that he flows easily through it. He's not a mind blowing lyricist, he's not going to change the world with his poetry but the relationship between his rhymes and his beats is definitely worth the cop.

The guest list features some of the coolest young cats in the game along with the one and only Action Bronson. Ab-Soul and Mac Miller pop up on 'Easily', Chance the Rapper on 'Glam', Vic Mensa and Sulaiman on 'Money Clip' and Bronsonlinio on 'Gametime' are some of my favs. While BJ the Chicago kid once again drops some smooth crooning on 'Attitude. All awesome features, no one lets Inglish down and neither do his beats let them down.

Props to Inglish for spreading the Chicago love, it's a place that gets a lot of negative attention but he along with young Chi Town spitters Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Sulaiman, etc all deserve credit for picking up where Lupe Fiasco left off.

Worth getting it? I'd say so. It's funky as pie and as all good music should do, it kinda takes you to another place. It won't take you to New York like Illmatic or Reasonable Doubt did but it will keep your feet tapping, head nodding and they lyrical content is good enough to have a little sing along. He hasn't done it with the big record label behind him - he's just making music that he enjoys listening to ... I enjoy listening to it too and it's got a long term spot in me ipod ya.
