Diary Of A Warriors Fan

The Warriors have made a few interesting signings recently. Signings that appear to be nothing more than 'ah let's try to stay in the news' type of signings ... signings that have made our Warriors guy slowly emerged from his cave deep in the depths of Mangere mountain. He woke up to this...

Yesterday the Warriors announced the signing of Jonathan Wright. Who is he? An outside back who had been battling away with the Cronulla Sharks last season, battling to the extent where he tried to move back to the Bulldogs mid-season. The Sharks blocked that move, only to deem the likes of Ricky Leutele, Sosaia Feki and Jacob Gagan as better options. Anyone think it's ironic that former Junior Warrior Feki had a great season with the Sharks, while the Warriors pick up Wright who, well he didn't have a great season.

Pewhairangi spent last season trooping in NSW Cup. Another back and you'll have to imagine he'll spend most of the season with the NSWarriors.

For starters, the Warriors didn't really need any outside backs. Heck, I was pretty happy with their recruitment before getting these two lads. They picked up Ryan Hoffman, a classy uber professional - the type of Australian players we have longed for.

This raises an issue for me - don't we want the Warriors to be a place where local talent is given an opportunity? Both Pewhairangi and Wright will likely feature in the NSW Cup for most of the season, would you pick either of them over Manu Vatuvei, Ngani Laumape, Konrad Hurrell or Glen Fisi'ahii? No, I'd rather go with David Fusitua as well. So the Warriors have effectively signed two players to block pathways for local talent in reserve grade?

Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose? Depth is fine and it's extremely important but you can build depth by giving young guys opportunities in reserve grade - that's what it's there for.

We can only wait and see, but it's hard to imagine either of these signings having much of an impact. It might make for a good headline - Warriors sign Australian player, but it's a hard one to make sense of logistically as well as highlighting the fact that the Warriors haven't quite figured out their development duty.
