NRL Grand Final Fever - Friday
I really like you JT, but Wayne told me to. I hope you understand.
It's Friday and there's only one way to feel on Friday - fucking excellent.
It's Friday and the more trivial news stories about the Grand Final have already been used which is also awesome. We know that Wayne Bennett is the master coach, we know that Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt are like Alfie and Kev, we know that James Tamou almost left the Cowboys and I sure as hell know all about how you feel regarding Justin Hodges.
Heck, there's even going to be an extra shipment of XXXX beer sent down to Sydney to cater for the Queenslanders.
But there's only two days left until the GF and all that bullshit is flowing under the bridge as the teams roll through their media commitments in Sydney. With both teams hailing from Queensland, they won't be able to nip back and forth from Sydney for the media commitments and both teams - well they Cowboys for sure as Townsville is a long way away - will be shacking up in Sydney for their preparations; a sacrifice that anyone would be happy to make.
I continue to think that the Cowboys will emerge victorious on Sunday night. But as the week goes on, the reasoning for this is becoming more and more scrambled. It's Friday and I really don't want to, but I can't help but fall back on the 'it's their year' vibe with the Cowboys. Two blokes who will hold the key are James Tamou and Matt Scott, who I have as being slightly better than Sam Thaiday and Adam Blair.
It's one hell of a match-up though with Scott and Tamou providing more offensive impact while Thaiday and Blair roam the middle of the field wrestling, niggling and chopping anyone and everyone down. Scott (131.10m) and Tamou (135.50m) each average more metres than Thaiday (100.35m) and Blair (87.60m) per game and have twice as many line breaks combined than the Broncos' pair.
This is in part due to Scott and Tamou getting stuck in more on attack as they both average more hit-ups per game than their Broncos rivals. While neither Scott or Tamou rarely play 80 minutes, Scott averages 13.76 carries and Tamou averages 14 which puts Blair's 10.85 carries and Thaiday's 11.65 carries per game to shame.
But the Broncos clearly haven't needed Blair and Thaiday to do the same job of Scott and Tamou. Blair and Thaiday certainly do take tough carries because they are starting props in the NRL, but coach Bennett uses them differently to the Cowboys' props which is especially the case when you consider how good the Broncos have been defensively. Blair averages 28.90 tackles a game while Thaiday puts in a mammoth shift each week averaging over 100 metres a game and over 30 tackles with 31.40.
The Cowboys props - especially Scott - aren't too far behind with Scott averaging 30 tackles while Tamou averages 25.40. Personally, I reckon Bennett's master-stroke this season as coach has been giving everyone a simply job to do and this is clearly evident in the mop-haired brothers of the Broncos who will have a massive task ahead of them as they try to limit the impact of Tamou, Scott and of course Jason Taumalolo.
It's Friday and while I'm generally excited/frothing at the mouth about seeing a high quality footy game, I'm also quite aroused at the prospect of seeing four of the best props of the 2015 season go at it. You might not think that Blair and Thaiday are in that 'Best Of 2015' conversation, but we don't need to look any further than their presence in Sunday night's Grand Final for an example of how good they have been.
Blair and Thaiday have laid a great platform for the Broncos against opposing teams with bigger and 'better' forwards. They have dominated the middle of the field and ensured that their play-makers always have good, quick, front-foot ball and that they are always in good field position by effectively slowing down their opponents.
It's Friday and on Sunday night, Blair and Thaiday will face their biggest test of the season against Tamou and Scott.
It's Friday and all we really wanna see is two kiwis going hard at each other.
