The Konrad Hurrell Files - No! Go Away

This will be the third thing that I have written about Konrad Hurrell in the space of roughly a month. I'm not sure whether I am excited by that because there is always something to write about or if I am a bit down on it all because I'd rather just hear nothing about Hurrell this off-season.

While the last two thingys I wrote about Hurrell were mainly due to his actions, I can't point the finger at Hurrell this time around. I can't blame Hurrell that his future is all up in the news with new stories about his possible departure from the Warriors appearing on what feels like a weekly basis. I guess it just feels that way when you would much rather hear nothing.

Various news outlets have reported that Hurrell's manager is exploring options in rugby both in Aotearoa and abroad along with possible moves to other NRL clubs and the English Super League. The Warriors through Tony Iro - who was recently given the recruitment job at Mt Smart - did what any club should do and highlight that they want Hurrell to play out his contract. The Warriors would be daft to openly suggest that Hurrell should look elsewhere, even despite his headline-grabbing nature as that would basically mean that they are giving up on Hurrell. Why would you publicly give up on any player after this season when 2016 and beyond looks so good?

Publicly is a lot different to what might be happening in private. I still think it wouldn't be wise for the Warriors to make any brash decisions right now and I'm sure in their planning meetings they are focused on getting the most out of Hurrell. There's the signings of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Isaac Luke who will both put Hurrell in the shade in terms of their significance to the club and team as well as giving the Warriors two of the most potent attacking weapons in the NRL so there won't be the over-reliance on Hurrell's steamrolling ways. And they could help Hurrell by making his job a simpler one.

There's also the experience that Jim Doyle and Andrew McFadden have gained this year. These two have already seen their influence on the club in action, but that's only going to increase over time and this club will start to become their club over the summer if it hasn't already. Throw in the arrivals of Justin Morgan from Melbourne Storm who will focus on the Warriors' defence and Brendan Inkster from the Manly Sea Eagles as 'Strength, Power And Rehab Coach'.

Morgan and Inkster have great track records and specialize in Hurrell's two weakest points as a footy player - defence and fitness. It would be pretty dumb to drum up these rumours and push Hurrell out when you have two coaches coming in who could have a great influence on Hurrell (that's if Hurrell wants them to help him).

Yes - NRL clubs drum up their own rumours and the Warriors (pre-Jim Doyle) are as guilty at it as any other club. I don't think these rumours are coming from the Warriors though, nor do I think Hurrell himself has anything to do with them. Which only leaves Hurrell's manager/agent guy.

I don't know, nor do I care who this guy is but it's clear that he is trying to ... well I'm not sure what he's trying to do. Oh wait, I know! He's trying to get Hurrell a nice juicy offer because that gives him a nice juicy amount of money himself.

I reckon it would be in Hurrell's best interests to stay with the Warriors until they no longer want him (which could be now, sure) as Hurrell hasn't really done nothing besides be an enigma. I also reckon that it is in Hurrell's best interests to stay out of the news and these rumours do the complete opposite which makes it all so fucking strange. I mean what would you do if you were Hurrell and his manager? I would be head down, bum up trying to right my ship and going into borderline hibernation to ensure that I fulfill my potential.

I would definitely not be keen to see my name/my client's name in various headlines.

Would I care if Hurrell left? Not really - he's welcome to chase the cash and continue to make silly choices. This is just a crazy situation that doesn't make any sense for any of the parties involved whether it's the Warriors, Hurrell or his manager. Besides the obvious allure of lots of money, there is little to gain for Hurrell and his manager to shop around. Heck, as an example of how mental this all is it could be the Warriors who are trying to push Hurrell out by shopping him around ... but at the moment I reckon it's the manager trying to be a wise guy.

I honestly don't know. I just want it all to go away until Hurrell is back reporting for duty in the pre-season.
