NRL Grand Final Aftermath - Final Thoughts On The Brisbane Broncos

Sure, the way the Brisbane Broncos lost that Grand Final to the North Queensland Cowboys was unfair. The Broncos were the second best team with a stingy defence - which was live and in full effect on Sunday night and clinical attack led by the most exciting halves combo in the NRL, so to lose to the Cowboys in such heart-breaking fashion sucks.

However, the Broncos will not be lamenting Golden Point. I have a feeling that despite what Wayne Bennett said in public, he would have noted a slight defensive lapse on that final play allowed the Cowboys to score. This needs to be kept in the context of the Broncos who had, for 79:59 minutes fought off the entire Cowboys play-book and almost won a Grand Final thanks to their defence. Something so minor like the Broncos' left side not pushing up with their right side who hunted Jonathan Thurston down which gave Michael Morgan space to run and you would have to imagine that the Broncos definitely knew what Morgan is capable of running the footy.

Maybe Bennett doesn't care, maybe he does but the Broncos left Sydney empty handed after an extremely good season.

Try think of a Broncos player from the 17 that ran out on Sunday night who was below a 6/10 this season...

Darius Boyd - Welcome back mate, welcome back. Possibly the quickest and best bounce back from a torn Achilles that I've seen.

Corey Oates - I remember watching him rip the Junior Warriors a 'new one' for the Broncos Under-20s as a massive second-rower. Oates is now Bennett's first choice left wing. You do the math and he's got a massive future ahead of him.

Jack Reed - Very solid and Reed has this ability to do things that you don't he think he would be able to do ... and make it look easy.

Justin Hodges - Would still be a great centre next year if his body allowed him.

Jordan Kahu - Both Oates and Kahu established themselves as the new 'top dawg wingers' in Brisbane and Kahu is excessively slick. Word on the street is that Kahu has much more skill and subtlety that we haven't seen because he has got in where he fits in on the wing.

Anthony Milford - One half of the best halves combo in the NRL.

Ben Hunt - Other half of the best halves combo in the NRL.

Sam Thaiday - We're a long way away from Thaiday being benched at the start of the year aren't we?

Andrew McCullough - Who had the most tackles in the NRL this season? This guy, which in the second best defensive team is a pretty fair effort.

Adam Blair - Resurgent, nothing less.

Matt Gillett - Almost as solid as Alex Glenn.

Alex Glenn - Almost as solid as Matt Gillett #MindFuck. Seriously though, Wayne Bennett knew what he would get on either edge this season with Glenn and Gillett both able to churn out 80 minutes and compete with any opponent admirably.

Corey Parker - Aka Mr Representative Player Of The Year.

Kodi Nikorima - Who's this? Ah duh, that's the guy who might be a Kiwi by the time you read this (Kiwis squad to tour on England named on Thursday, throw Kahu into this as well and Glenn and Blair #Kiwis).

Jarrod Wallace - 25 games this season for Wallace, who was lingering on the fringe of the squad last season.

Mitchell Dodds - Wallace and Dodd formed a bench duo who would come off the bench and maintain parity with their opposition after Blair and Thaiday started the job,

Joe Ofahengaue - The future (who was just named to rep Tonga), along with guys we can't forget like Josh McQuire, James Gavet, Francis Molo, Lachlan Maranta and Dale Copley.

Coach Bennett has effectively done what he has done all his career (well besides Newcastle) and especially with the St George Dragons. Bennett is a master at getting the best out of players who, for whatever reason weren't as good before Bennett graced them with his presence. Bennett is also a master at enhancing the game's best players and I don't think it's a coincidence that the Broncos' veterans all enjoyed great seasons.

There's one phrase that sums up my feelings about the Broncos right now - you gotta lose one to win one, genius huh!? There's plenty of great things that we've learned about them since they were formed and one of those is the club's ability to bring fresh youngsters into the NRL and they are now in a great position for the next two to three season if not beyond. While the Broncos stumbled at the final (like the very last one) hurdle this season, I wouldn't bank on any other team winning a Premiership in the next three years.
