Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Heads Up
You all know how bummed out I was after that loss to the Rabbitohs, hopefully that came across loud and clear, that's what I was going for because the lads sucked. But this week brings the Roosters to town, another week, another chance to improve so it would be rude not to approach this with overwhelming positivity.
Not reckless positivity, just a good vibe. Supporting the Warriors mean that you have to ride this wave, you have to put last week's shocker behind you and try again this week ... I mean that as a fan, like, we have to try our best to support them again.
It's a lot easier to be positive when there are a few new faces named in the 17, albeit forced changes thanks to our plethora of State Of Origin players.
Konrad Hurrell's inclusion wasn't forced, but it's welcome. Given how lacklustre the Warriors were last week on attack, Hurrell will at the very least be another attacking weapon to have in the backline. Hurrell however is also a reflection of the Warriors in that he possesses a wealth of natural attacking ability, but has equally as many flaws in his game.
With Albert Vete starting in place of Jacob Lillyman, Charlie Gubb comes onto the bench and it's been a while since we last saw Gubb. Vete has all the attributes to go well as a starter and it'll be interesting to see how the Warriors approach the first 20 minutes before Gubb and Sam Lisone come on; both Vete and Ben Matulino have skills whether it be offloads or a nice passing game and we could see the Warriors push the ball early on.
Well, that's what I'm hoping for anyway. Against the Rabbitohs we saw the Warriors take hit ups one off the ruck and then put on a series of 2nd man plays that went no where. Have some fun lads, go out and take the game to the Chooks.
The other inclusion is Raymond Faitala-Mariner who will start in place of Ryan Hoffman on the left edge. RFM didn't cover himself in glory a few weeks back in his debut and this is an opportunity for him to show that he has what it takes to play in the NRL.
RFM might offer the Warriors a bit more spice, a bit of enthusiasm which would be nice.
Unfortunately for Saliva Havili, he's been given the chop. I imagine that it had something to do with Havili not really taking his chance over the past two weeks, despite Andrew McFadden offering up one confusing hooker rotation, but I don't think you can leave Tui Lolohea out of the side.
Somehow, he deserves to be in the 17 and with Sam Tomkins back in the side along with Hurrell, Lolohea will come off the bench. I'm excited to see how this works and I really hope that Lolohea isn't a like-for-like replacement for Havili or Nathan Friend before Thomas Leuluai got injured.
Lolohea would be wasted if he's used ocming off the bench for Friend, for 10-15 minutes a half. You need to give Lolohea much more freedom than that and I would love to see Lolohea come on with Friend still on the park (he's an 80 minute man) and be given the freedom to always be in support and to use his wide range of skills in the backline.
I'm also starting Sam Tomkins Watch. He wasn't too flash the week before last and didn't lace up against the Bunnies, how will he impact this Warriors side?
The key though, as is usually the case with the Warriors, are the halves. For me, it's simple; Shaun Johnson mate, go out and just play like you are in your backyard. Chad Townsend, do the basics and set blokes up. Both of you, run the footy and please, please, please finish the sets much better than you did last week.
If there is a good time to play the Roosters, this is it. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves won't play and they are without Mitchell Pearce, Michael Jennings and Boyd Cordner. They do however still have a beastly forward pack and that Roger Tuivasa-Sheck bloke as well as Blake Ferguson returning.
This does feel like a game that the Warriors will win, but they won't win if they put in a similar performance to last week. We're still mid-table and we need to start playing like it or else we will see our season quickly fade away.
