Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Damn Chooks

I don't blame you if you were slightly fatigued watching that effort, needing to check your phone at halftime because you had completely forgot about the world around after a pulsating contest between the Warriors and the Roosters.

To get the negatives out of the way will help the grieving/breathing process a bit.

While the Warriors grabbed a few last gasp/narrow victories recently, they were (as I've said over and over again) against some of the NRL's lower ranked teams. Teams who weren't as clinical or confident in their systems as the Roosters and teams who clearly don't have the fitness levels of the Roosters. This is a Roosters team who feel comfy in their lazy-boys on their try line, giving away penalties and making effort after effort yet still managed to enter the last 10-5 minutes with more energy and momentum.

The issue for the Warriors is that they couldn't match that. A few mistakes and a few poorly executed kicks gave the Roosters opportunities to do what they do, and then Jonno Wright rather astonishingly dropped that field goal attempt.

But the last thing I want to do is rip Wright's head off; we've all been there, doing something on the sports field with that we can't explain, that is really dumb and that we know we should have never even got close to doing. Head up Jonno, the Warriors lost this as a unit.

Shaun Johnson's goal kicking has turned to custard.

Do I praise Andrew McFadden for being creative with his use of the bench? Or does he have to answer a few questions as he ONCE AGAIN served up one hell of a confusing rotation. It has been highlighted by the mix and match use of Nathan Friend and Saliva Havili all season and this week we saw the likes of Sebastine Ikahihifo and Charlie Gubb used in spits and spurts, while, with all due respect to Wright, I wouldn't carry him on my bench.

It was impossible to ignore how good the Roosters looked late in the game while the Warriors struggled in making repeat efforts and in making the right decisions. Maybe that's where that mumbo-jumbo of bench minutes becomes a factor, just give the right blokes the right amount of rest?

Hopefully and I say this through glasses tinted with positivity, McFadden is very clear and transparent with his players. From the outside, it looks anything but.

Also, there was a general lack of communication and emphasis on little details. Twice, once on each side of the field, Ken Maumalo and Manu Vatuvei ended up trying to out-jump their centres in Solomone Kata and Konrad Hurrell. One resulted in a try and the other gave the Chooks the ball back. It's simple; call mine and get the centre the fuck out of there to block the path of the Roosters players.

A lot of this doesn't reflect positively on McFadden.

After last week's loss to the Rabbitohs, I'm happy to say that that is where the negatives stop, for me. We've come up against the Rabbitohs and Roosters and lost both games, rightfully so as both losses have shown us that the Warriors have a long way to go to be able to compete with the NRL's best all the way up until the final whistle.

The two losses feel vastly different though. We were pretty good and had some rotten luck when Nathan Friend, who was one of our best had to leave, pushing Chad Townsend to dummy half, Tui Lolohea to six and Wright to fullback.

Steps forward were taken, which is all I can really ask for.

Konrad Hurrell returned and I loved what he brought to the team with his energy and enthusiasm, which looks fresh, he's got a bit of a vibe in his step. This gives us two weapons on either edge with Hurrell and Solomone Kata both showing what dangerous ball carriers they are. They are rough diamonds with both far from safe on defence and they are always good for a dropped ball or two, but they both still have a lot of NRL footy to get through.

Hurrell, Kata, Maumalo and Vatuvei ran for over 100 metres each and combined for 20 tackle busts. Fabulous, truly exceptional to be honest, but that's 19 more tackle busts than our forward pack.

Last week I questioned the Warriors attack, or lack of attack and with such a powerful outside back quartet, they can cover those holes. It doesn't take much imagination to get Hurrell or Kata one on one and we did see a few plays that showed some creative juices do exist inside the Warriors.

I thought Nathan Friend was awesome and to continue my McFadden-bashing, I think he showed how under used he was and/or how wrongly used he was previously. Slightly disrespectful if you ask me but when called on, Friend did what was required and then some.

Ikahihifo, while playing odd minutes was also impressive. He's not overly big, nor does he have a ruthless streak inside him but he's got good footwork and is always up for a tough carry. The issue is that when Jacob Lillyman returns, he'll go back to being stuck, used oddly.

Ben Matulino is without doubt our best player, thanks to being one of our top two each week. You can't question the work of Matulino while Albert Vete was solid in his first start. The forwards came up against a big, angry, mobile Roosters pack and did their job. Simon Mannering also put in another standard, inspiring performance with 103 metres off 10 carries and 42 tackles.

We don't want Matulino to be our best player each week though, he can't win the game and he couldn't win this game by himself. All he can do is put the Warriors in the best position to win, which he did but we need Shaun Johnson, Chad Townsend and Tui Lolohea to be our best players, they win the game. They were better, which is nice but weren't good enough. I am pretty happy though, Johnson had a go and was eager to add a bit of spice to the attack while Townsend was alright. Improved, but not dominant.

Raymond Faitala-Mariner won't be putting much pressure on either Bodene Thompson or Ryan Hoffman in the near future.

It would be nice if everyone would be slightly honest about Sam Tomkins. I'm 100 percent happy if the Warriors say that Tomkins will be out indefinitely, possibly even the rest of the season instead of this bullshit we see each week where he is named and then pulls out. It doesn't really impact anything, we know Lolohea will slot in and while he wasn't great this week (he did put on the last pass for Kata and Vatuvei's tries), and the team has worked with Lolohea plenty. It just doesn't look good for the club, playing dumb games like this.

It doesn't look good, but it fits the mould of confusing shit.

Also, I'd like everyone to start thinking about a worst case scenario that could be a great scenario. The Warriors are a mid-table team who could currently go either way; go on a hot streak where everything clicks or, keep losing games to better teams and slip up against teams around them on the table.

Should the latter happen and it become clear that the Warriors can't make the top 8, then surely we have to see the likes of Tomkins and possibly Townsend cut. We know Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is coming so whichever young bloke gets a run will do so knowing that they'll be behind RTS next season, but I would want to see David Fusitua be given a run with Lolohea given some bonus time in the halves with Johnson.

We don't know what Townsend's up to next season, but regardless, he hasn't really come close to filling his potential/reputation (/accolades) he came to the Warriors with.

There is a lot of water to go under the bridge before we get to that point, but it has to happen if all hope is lost. However, it's highly probable that the Warriors stay around the edge of the 8 which will mean that the best team will need to play.

Smile, at least we saw the Warriors throw the footy around.
