Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Where's Da Aunties?

Two losses, back to back, hardly a surprise given how the Warriors had stumbled their way to victory over a few mediocre sides. They not have a perfect opportunity to get back on the win-trail as they head to the Gold Coast, home of the Aunties and many kiwi bros to offer some warm support.

The Titans pose a threat that is extremely hard to gauge, which is why this game will be one of the more interesting games the Warriors have played recently. You could argue that the Titans are a very similar side to the Warriors as they can both defeat any team on their day, but struggle to do anything on a consistent basis.

James Roberts and Aiden Sezer are two players for the Titans who will demand plenty of attention. It's going to be a big test for Solomone Kata coming up against Roberts who is bigger, faster and stronger than Kata and knows that physically, he's better than any centre who dares to line up against him.

Sezer also matches up nicely against Shaun Johnson. But it's not Johnson's job to keep Sezer quiet, that responsibility will fall on the shoulders of our forwards who will need to get up off their line quickly and limit Sezer's time and space. When he's got some time and space, he relies on his educated life boot to either boot in an accurate long kick or a pin-point attacking kick for his outside men. The fact that line speed and pressuring halves has never really existed in a Warriors jersey, is definitely a worry.

I expect the forward packs to be relatively even, especially as I think Ryan Hoffman won't play. Albert Vete wasn't named in the 17 but you'd imagine that if Hoffman's out, Raymond Faitala-Mariner would move to the edge, opening up a spot for Vete. Vete has played a whole lot of footy so far this season and has had two big games; traveling to Perth to face the Bunnies and then the Roosters so it would be nice for him to have  a rest. I'd love to see him play though, we need him.

Just on Hoffman, the Warriors made their bed with concussion after that game against Paramatta earlier in the season. They then let Simon Mannering play on after looking to be fucking out cold and if Hoffman does play, after suffering yet another concussion in Origin, they are setting a very poor precedent, borderline hypocritical.

Andrew McFadden's confusing selections/bench use look set to continue. He's brought Siliva Havili back to play 15 minutes off the bench and must have seen something in RFM that everyone else has missed because RFM hasn't looked that great. I'm a fan of Charlie Gubb, but he's got to start making an impact before his career fizzles, hopefully it comes against the Titans.

The forward packs are pretty even, but there is an opportunity for the Warriors to get the advantage. However, much like line speed, overly aggressive and enthusiasm isn't a staple of the Warriors. If they are eager to ruffle a few feathers, put a few shots on and let the likes of Luke Douglas, Nate Myles and Ryan James that they are in for a nightmare of a game, then they will be set up nicely.

Keep an eye on Mark Ioane, Matt Robinson and Agnatius Paasi who have all been a part of the Warriors in various capacities.

The halves are always a key factor, but I'm gonna say that this is it for Shaun Johnson and Chad Townsend. This is the game where they have to show that they can combine to control a game of footy as well as look dangerous on attack. Opportunities will present themselves as the Titans tend to fade in and out of games, but Johnson and Townsend will want to ensure that the Titans are never in the contest.

We rarely see Johnson and Townsend take control with their kick games, there hasn't been much patience to kick for the corner and work hard. I remain hopeful that they can do this because the Titans (besides Roberts who showed how to do this last week) don't have anyone who is going to make big metres through the middle.

Kick long, pin 'em down their end and get repeat sets.

Townsend is still very much on shaky ground, he hasn't shown that he deserves to stay, let alone a nice pay packet should he leave.

We know we've got the weapons out wide and that they can score points from pretty much anywhere, but defensively there are still many questions. That's solved by completing the majority of your sets and not gifting attacking opportunities to the Titans.

As always, I think we'll win but. As always, I hope we see some flair, aggression and enthusiasm on defence.

Would I have liked Jason Nightingale to join the Warriors? Not really. He turned down what was said to be a big money offer from the Warriors to stay with the Dragons, taking a pay cut and I think it was wise/fortunate. Nightingale is a great servant of the game and very solid winger, but I don't see the point in bringing him in to take up a spot on the wing where we have a bunch of youngsters waiting in line.

Those youngsters are far inferior to Nightingale, but there's only one way they get better and that's by playing more footy. Jim Doyle though, he's making moves.

Maybe he should move Sam Tomkins out the door, oh, no, that'll cost money. Just keep hanging around Sammy.
