Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Ummm ... Disgusting?

There are a few things that the Warriors have been consistently good at over the past 20 years and leading that list is allowing their fans to experience vastly different emotions, all within 80 minutes of footy.

When the Warriors jumped out to an early lead, I knew that this probably wouldn't be the way the game panned out The Cowboys simply hadn't had much ball. Still, that didn't stop feeling a great sense of hope, not as in 'shit, we might win here' but hope for the future, the remaining games of the season and for 2016.

This was because the players who fired during that opening bonanza were the young lads. Mason Lino made his debut and I liked what he offered, Tuimoala Lolohea was exceptional and demonstrated his x-factor while Albert Vete and Charlie Gubb put in the sort of efforts that could see them one day become the kings of Mt Smart.

Honestly, Gubb's desire on defence where he busts his backside out of marker to make a tackle is a rare sight for Warriors' fans.

Vete? Well I've already talked about Vete this season - you can feel the energy around Mt Smart when he charges forward.

But then Lino gave away a penalty as the Cowboys were working their way out of their own half, on the 5th tackle.

Then the destruction began.

Lino and Ken Maumalo struggled defensively/were extremely poor, but the Warriors as a unit were extremely poor so there's no point putting a few young players on blast.

Disgusting is a strong word and while I have preferred to describe the lack of effort or pride in their performance from the Warriors as 'worrying' ... it has now become disgusting.

Just like that soft, brownish apple. The game between the Broncos and Roosters last night was a crisp apple and the Warriors were a rotten apple.

You would be a fool to believe that the Warriors are better than the Cowboys, that's obvious, but that is when desire steps in. Do you want to suffer another disgusting loss? Or do you want to claw your way through the contest and make life hard for the Cowboys? At the very least, the Warriors could have rallied for their fans who fork out their cash for tickets/memberships.

The same fans who are expected to buy one of 10 jerseys each season.

That is the disgusting aspect of the Warriors right now. They simply gave up. Suddenly 18 points quickly becomes 50.

Had the Warriors been at their peak with the team they had, I still reckon they would have lost 50-38. But we could at least hang our hat on the fact that we have a team who are fighting. Struggling, but fighting hard to represent their club with gusto.

Let's play a game - who missed the most tackles for the Warriors?

That honour goes to Dominque Peyroux, the man who replaced Konrad Hurrell .... who was dropped for a lack of defensive effort.

This is where we have to reflect more intently on Andrew McFadden because the attitude, effort and desire from the Warriors comes from him. Whether it be the rotating playing cast, which makes forming combinations and developing a better attitude even more difficult or whether it is the dramatic lack of response McFadden is getting from his players - something is wrong.

The players don't look like they are busting their gut to restore some pride, for their coach.

The coach's message doesn't appear to have been truly absorbed by the players.

It sucks.

Shaun Johnson went to great lengths last night to, on behalf of the players, take the blame off McFadden as 'it's the players who miss tackles etc'. But good coaches instill a mindset in their players where those players don't want to let their coach down. I'll settle on both the players and coaches (plural, as Tony Iro hasn't done fuck all either) being pretty shit right now.

I don't believe that McFadden should or will be dropped though, or else we are back at square one with another new coach (unless that coach is Geoff Toovey). The Warriors have had four coaches in three years while the Brisbane Broncos have had four coaches since 1988, so I think some sort of stability is needed and with the players coming to the club in 2016 McFadden should be judged then.

So what now? Well I think the biggest thing for me is seeing Mason Lino and Tui Lolohea team up again in the halves. Lino wasn't awesome, but he was better than Chad Townsend and his simple style as a half where he just gets through his range of kicks, passes when needed and runs every so often could be a nice foil for Shaun Johnson. At the very least, Lino has the ability to be a solid back up option and I would like to see the Warriors show some faith in him. He's the sort of half that Aotearoa doesn't really produce (and what we need/want).

But such has been McFadden's way this season, we could definitely see Townsend come back into the team alongside Lolohea. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this happened as this decision would perfectly sum up McFadden's coaching in 2015. I would obviously like to see Lino and Lolohea given the opportunity to stake their claim but to also grow as NRL players in the last few games of the season.

I've repeated many phrases and words during this slump from the Warriors, the main one being how disappointing the Warriors have been with their season on the line. Even with injuries and suspension taken into account, the way they have crumbled to such huge losses should have everyone at Mt Smart disgusted.

At least we have this kid...
