Diary Of A Warriors Fan

What an absolutely mental weekend for the Warriors.

There have been whispers of salary cup issues, Andrew McFadden spoke up about the troubles at the club, Sam Tomkins took the rather odd option of publically questioning the culture of the club before he arrived and well, they served up some utter shite against the Dragons.

We'll start with news out of Australia that the Warriors are in salary cap trouble. This would be right, if the Warriors don't unload anyone else between now and next season as the arrival of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke means that players simply have to go. The basis of the story from Triple M is that players need to be moved on to avoid trouble, which I have 100 percent faith in McFadden and Jim Doyle to do. They have already started to do this with plenty of fat already cut - Suaia Matagi, Nathaniel Peteru, Siliva Havili, Sam Rapira, Sam Tomkins, Chad Townsend and Nathan Friend, while you can expect to see non-contributors shopped around. No dramas.

This goes hand-in-hand with McFadden's comments in an interview with someone who doesn't know much about the Warriors yesterday. I don't really care for what McFadden said because they came after the players that he coaches served up one of the most embarrassing performances I've ever seen from the Warriors and 2015 will be remembered in my mind as the year of 'Confusing Cappy'.

McFadden's comments about the culture of the Warriors and the way the club has been run, are broad/long-term comments. They are comments that sniff of a coach who is already looking towards 2016, not much attention seems to be given to the Warriors winning footy games right now, to make the top-8.

I accept the fact that Ryan Hoffman, Bodene Thompson and Shaun Johnson haven't been playing which are huge losses, but their absences have provided opportunities to others. Others like Chad Townsend and Sam Tomkins, who could have stepped up and bowed out as Warriors on a high, but instead they have hindered this team - Townsend especially.

Besides passing to Caspar, let alone Caspar's toes, Townsend continued to bomb aimlessly. I remember a bomb he kicked out to our right wing, which didn't have a chaser within 10 metres of it and then I remember another bomb that went three metres.

Players with limited athletic ability, like Townsend are in the NRL for their ability to control games. Townsend has shown that he can't do that.

The '0' on the scoreboard is obviously horrible. People will point to having no Johnson, but personally I believe the responsibility here falls on the shoulders of McFadden who has leaned all season towards structured block plays that the Dragons swallowed with ease. Johnson has been able to cover this up by either running the ball, or delivering a gorgeous pass or kick, but without him, the Warriors attack like a picture book - easy to read. I remember a sweeping, structured move from a play-the-ball on the right edge, where they went through a few block plays out to the left. It was one of the only times against the Dragons when the Warriors actually caught and passed the ball like NRL players, but it only got the left-winger Manu Vatuvei the ball with a defender in front of him 20 metres out.

The whole point of these plays is to manipulate defenders and create an extra man out wider, but this moved summed up the Warriors attack at the moment - no creativity and they run the plays without any intensity or impetus.

I mean, the way Ken Maumalo scoffed a pretty easy try and didn't show much desire to actually score it and stay inside the touchline could also sum up this effort from the Warriors.

There weren't many bright spots, but every time I watch Tuimoala Lolohea, it's hard to ignore his quality and I'm sure that he will benefit from this game time at halfback. Lolohea will benefit because he's playing in a team who are currently struggling to hang in the NRL and against the Dragons he was playing behind a forward pack who were well and truly out-played. Lolohea is facing adversity and for him, Albert Vete, Sam Lisone and Charlie Gubb who all impress me every time I watch them, this period will serve them very well as they learn what it takes at the NRL level.

One Warriors forward passed 100 metres - Ben Matulino who was ironically playing on the edge.

Six Dragons forwards made 100 metres, including former Warrior Leeson Ah Mau who had a whale of a game with 180 metres off 20 carries. Matulino had the most carries for the Warriors with 15.

Both Sebastine Ikahihifo and Siliva Havili must have done something heavy to McFadden as he seems reluctant to give them any game time. Simon Mannering switched between playing on the edge and through the middle during the game, because Ikahihifo only played 36 minutes and I'm certain that Ikahihifo can churn out much bigger minutes than that.

Mannering is more than capable of slotting in either position, but it doesn't help out the defence of the Warriors when Mannering is being moved around. Especially when you have a lock in Ikahihifo sitting there. For the record Mannering missed four tackles and had five ineffective tackles.

Havili? Well we haven't seen Havili offer much reason to demand more game time, but I would argue that he hasn't been given the opportunity to. 11 minutes off the bench against the Dragons and I think Havili had one eye on admiring the work of his future homies at the Dragons.

It's immensely unfair to single out one player right now because the Warriors sucked in all departments, but these shots of Raymond Faitala-Mariner trying to defend before Tyson Frizzell burst through the line, don't make for good viewing. Faitala-Mariner obviously has plenty of work to do on his decision making etc on defence (think back to his debut) and his lack of defensive nous while being a barnstorming ball-carrier can definitely be linked back to the 'all-conquering' Under 20's set-up of the Warriors. But the issues aren't specific to Faitala-Mariner as there's a lack of trust, smart decision making and effort from all the Warriors players.

Faitala-Mariner creeps in-field to help Gubb and Havili as Ah Mau hits a short-ball

Oh wow, Ah Mau's a decoy! #crikey. Faitala-Mariner is now out of position...

In fact, he's behind Havili ... how the fuck did he get there. Lolohea moves in-field to make up for Faitala-Mariner's lack of trust of his inside men.

Yup, if Faitala-Mariner was where that X is, everything would have been fine as Frizzell hits a short ball - would we ever expect Lolohea to stop a rampant Frizzell? Nah, that's Faitala-Mariner's job, or should have been.

The Warriors season was on the line against the Dragons and we have once again seen a Warriors team not show up in this situation. They are now on 22 points in 10th and they now head to Penrith, are at home to the Cowboys, away to the Tigers and away to the Bulldogs. Four games that I can see this team losing.

That's the hardest part of this 36-0 loss to the Dragons as a win could have kept them very much in the mix. While they are still somewhat in the mix, they didn't look like much of an NRL team and rewarded fans who stick by them with a golden duck.

Also, Andrew McFadden won't be given the flick when he's part of rebuilding this club. That's just dumb.
