Kenny Bromwich vs El Niche Cache

Kenny Bromwich hasn't put a foot wrong since coming into the NRL with Melbourne, doing whatever Craig Bellamy asks of him and adding a splash of his own funk for good measure. He's the mantis, so he answered a few questions...

Walk us through what happens in the days after the Grand Final - do you have to hang around in Melbourne for a few meetings, a bit of a celebration as a team and then you're allowed to go on your way?

After the GF we have a few club commitments in Melbourne like reviews and the Presentation Ball. We stay in Melbourne for about a week. After all of those are done we head off in our own directions and enjoy our time off.

You settled into doing a job through the middle, coming off the bench for the Storm this season. What are some key aspects of playing in the middle for the Storm, especially as a smaller forward like yourself?

I really enjoy playing in the middle. I guess the main thing about coming into the middle off the bench is trying to come on the field and keep the level of performance that the starting forwards set or making a difference. Being a smaller forward I like to use a bit of footwork or ball movement.

Do you have a preferred position - edge vs middle?

Nah I'm not too fussed, I'll play wherever the team needs me

The short passing between you and Jesse was a thing of beauty this season, is that instinct or do y'all need to practice this a lot at training as well?

We all practice it at training heaps, but I guess a bit of it is instinct as well when me and Jess move the ball around together.

Did the Storm coaching staff give you a few specific things to work on in your time off or over summer?

They provide us all with programs, they don't want people coming back way out of shape.

We've heard a lot about how Jesse came to play for the Storm, but how did the Storm scout you?

When I came to Melbourne I went to a school called Hallam Secondary College. At that school there is a Melbourne Storm academy program there. I played there and got picked up playing school footy and then went on to play SG ball for the Melbourne Storm and just kept progressing from there.

Are there any other Manurewa lads in the NRL who you catch up with, or know from playing local footy with as a youngster?

See this content in the original post

Yea there are a few Manurewa boys running around in the NRL. I'm really good mates with Sitaleki Akauola and Peta Hiku, we went to the same school and played at the Marlins together so we always catch up when we can.

What are some South Auckland memories that stand out for you?

The memories that stand out for me the most would definitely be the games of footy that we use to have down our street, there would be about 8-10 of us playing for the whole day then taking off to the pools or water-hole for a swim afterwards.

What schools did you go to in Manurewa?

I went to Clayton Park primary school then to Manurewa Intermediate then on to James Cook high school. I really enjoyed myself at school and made a heap of mates. I never played league for my high school while I was there. Only at lunchtime.

What's the number one thing you miss from South Auckland when you're staying in Melbourne?

I always miss my family and friends when I'm in Melbourne. I always head back to catch up with them all when I can.

What were the first things on your agenda for the off-season?

I try to get away somewhere in the off-season for a couple of weeks. I just got back from Queenstown in NZ. It was awesome! So many things to do down there. I wasn't ready to come back haha.

Do you have a meal that you always eat before and after a game?

Nah not really.

Give me a few music artists that you're loving right now?

I love music, I can listen to anything really, depends what mood I'm in. I really like my kiwi artists and groups too. I like Sid Diamond, PNC and David Dallas. I went to the Kora gig in Melbourne this year too. They were un-real live.

Do the Storm's kiwi lads have some slang that the Aussie lads don't understand, or any inside jokes that the Aussies have no idea about?

Haha nah, the Auzzie boys in the team are pretty onto it with all the kiwi/poly lingo. They walk in and say 'chur the brothers' or 'sup toks'. It's pretty funny. We're all really close.

What is one piece of advice that someone gave you that you always remember?

I've had quite a few people give me some great advice. It's pretty hard to pinpoint one.  My dad was always one to encourage me about "taking my opportunities when they come, because you'll never know if you'll get that opportunity again".

Having gained some wisdom in the NRL now, what would you tell a youngster from South Auckland or around Aotearoa who is chasing a sporting dream?

I think it's easy to get caught up with everything that's happening in South Auckland. If you have a dream, chase it. Be willing to make sacrifices, and work your backside off.
