Reserve Grade Kiwis #1

Hopefully Manaia Cherrington won't be a Reserve Grade Kiwi too much longer

Looking into the kiwi/polynesian lads who are trucking away in both the New South Wales and Queensland reserve grade competitions has been a bit of a logistical nightmare. I've tinkered with ideas on how to give our Reserve Grade Kiwis some love as they either pursue an NRL dream or just enjoy their reserve grade footy and I think I've now settled on this thingy-ma-jig.

The idea is that each week I'll take a brief look at two or three lads each week, guys who have an interesting wee situation, guys to watch out for or just guys who had fallen off your NRL radar but are still battling away. Here goes...

Manaia Cherrington

Starting at hooker for Wests Tigers this week is Manaia Cherrington, possibly the unluckiest bloke in reserve grade, easily the unluckiest kiwi kid in reserve grade. Cherrington looked set to take over from Robbie Farah when Farah was on the outer, then Farah wasn't on the outer and the Tigers signed Matt Ballin to bolster their hooking stocks.

Cherrington has played a few NRL games this season and I loved his work as he's a very crisp passer and has subtle variations around the ruck that give him a bit of space to run. With Farah and Ballin ahead of him, there's been noise about Cherrington possibly on the move with the Panthers mentioned the most as a possible destination. That would be fab and would grow the kiwi contingent at Penrith but right now, Cherrington hs battling away, trying to put good performances up, waiting for an opportunity.

Pita Godinet

The little fella returned from Wakefield to trial with Manly Sea Eagles over the summer and has since played a game for Manly in the NRL, while playing most of his footy for Manly's reserve grade side. Godinet will start at halfback for Manly and returns to Mt Smart to face the Warriors' reserve grade team, who Godinet spent a lot of time with while he sniffed around the NRL squad.

Godinet is still only 28-years-old and with Manly lacking depth, especially in the halves at the moment, he is a perfect player for Manly to have on their books as he can step in to do a job if Dylan Walker or Daly Cherry-Evans are out.

Peter Gubb

The younger brother of Charlie Gubb, Peter starts on the wing for Wynnum Manly Seagulls this weekend up in Queensland, against Tweed Heads Seagulls, call it the battle of the Seagulls. Charlie had a stint with Wynnum for two years and those two years brought back to back Queensland Cup titles in a team coached by current Cowboys coach Paul Green, Peter followed his older bro and here we are.

Charlie was in top form when he discussed his little brother's move to Wynnum...

This isn't about Charlie though, it's about Peter so shout out to Peter.
