Kiwi-NRLWahine Round Wha Preview
Brisbane Broncos are dwelling in their NRLWahine dynasty as they stacked up their their third win in a row last weekend, now setting up a Queensland derby against Titans today (Saturday). Eels face Roosters and the Kiwi-NRL Knights host Dragons, with the Knights chasing their first win of the campaign. Let's check in with how Aotearoa's wahine are going...
Titans have their usual stock of Kiwi-NRL flavour with Tiana Raftstrand-Smith starting at centre, Kimiora Breayley-Nati in the halves and Georgia Hale doing everything off the bench. Karli Hansen is yet to feature in NRLWahine and is again outside the top-17 this week. Amber Hall is the only Kiwi-NRL Bronco with Lavinia Gould floating as depth.
Hall was at her destructive best in Broncos win over Dragons last week with 18 runs for 164m @ 9.11m/run, 3 tackle busts, 4 offloads and 17 tackles @ 100 percent in 50 minutes of footy.
Epic. Hall is 3rd in Post Contact Metres, 9th in total Run Metres and 1st in Offloads. Broncos are a classy outfit and Hall is merely playing her role in this machine, yet Hall is the best edge forward in NRLWahine. How Titans deal with Hall's dynamic edge mahi will be crucial and Hale might play a role in limiting Broncos momentum as she's racked up 60 tackles in three games @ 98.4 percent efficiency. That included 15 tackles @ 100 percent in last week's loss to Eels.
The loss to Eels also featured Hale averaging 11.16m/run (6 runs - 67m) and Raftstrand-Smith averaging 10m/run (8 runs - 80m) showcasing some low key power. Keep tabs on Breayley-Nati in the halves as she has only registered a try assist in the first game and against Broncos, the Manurewa Marlins junior will need to dabble in play-making.
Eels have another Manurewa junior at centre in Jocephy Daniels, joined by Kiwi Ferns hooker Nita Maynard. They come up against Roosters who have Leianne Tufuga on the wing, Raecene McGregor in the halves and Mya Hill-Moana named to start at prop. Both teams had wins last round, although without notable Kiwi-NRL contributions. Roosters have one win, Eels have two.
Madison Bartlett returns for Dragons, while Knights have rolled out the most confusing team list but are still stacked with Kiwi-NRL funk. Bartlett will have a Kiwi-NRL match up against either Katelyn Vaha'akolo or Autumn-Rain Stephens-Daly, with the latter shifting from halves to win in last week's loss to Roosters.
This flowed on to Charntay Poko starting in the halves after playing as a lock forward, while the Kiwi-NRL forward pack is still enticing despite the Knights losing all their games. Annetta Nu'uausala and Maitua Feterika are starting props, Krystal Rota at hooker with Charlotte Scanlan and Ngatokotoru Arakua coming off the bench.
It's a bummer that the heartiest Kiwi-NRL team is yet to win a game and the selection shake up is likely a product of the losses. There is encouragement to be found in Stephens-Daly finding a spot on the wing despite things not quite working out for her in the halves, while Poko was already showcasing her wide range of skills as a forward. Moving to the halves last week resulted in Poko having the most kicking metres for either team, but just 2 runs for 18m and no Kiwi-NRL Knights player averaged close to 10m/run.
A week of clarity in positions and roles could help Knights step up to compete against an impressive Dragons team. There is immense power, mobility and footwork in the Knights' Kiwi-NRL forwards, enough to shake up the Dragons middle. This forward pack is yet to really fire though and ideally greater comfort in NRLWahine footy will help bring out the best performance of their campaign.
