Footy Rhubarb - World Cup

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain as the old tune goes but the Spanish will still need their brollies for the storm ahead. So Spain are out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after going down 2-0 to Chile this morning, shock horror. Spain have been outplayed in both games so far with the 5-1 defeat to Netherlands and this mornings loss a sobering affair. After winning Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, and the Euro 2012 it seemed Spain were unstoppable but such cycles in football have to end and it ended for Reds today.

Now this group is a very difficult one containing both 2010 finalists as well as dark horses Chile and the feisty Aussies. On paper most would have bet on both Spain and Holland to cruise through but I had a few alarm bells going off. Groups like this very rarely finish up how you think, I had a feeling either Holland or Spain wouldn't get out. I didn't however expect Holland to thrash Spain like they did and I certainly didn't expect Spain to be so poor against Chile. Spain could barely pass to each other and all basic defending went out the window. They were reduced to long ball! Spain playing long ball! It was confusing to watch, it was as if overnight they had sacked Del Bosque and replaced him with Sam Alladyce. After such recent success it was a matter of time before the fantastic run ended, it was inevitable. Usually this transition involves players retiring, a change of system, or a break down of an area of the team but everything broke down. Suddenly Ramos can't mark a player, Iniesta can't find space for a pass, and Diego Costa doesn't know what offside means.

To be honest I think it's quite good for football that their dominance has ended. I don't like the tiki taka style football and I can't stand it when a team is too successful. Not only that but Spain have been rolling around on the floor, diving, and getting their own way for a very long time and it's about time they got brought down to earth. Now it also happens to be a common trend that the previous winners have disappointing World Cups after success. France crashed out at the group stage in 2002 after winning the previous 1998 tournament, Brazil were below average in 2006 after the 2002 victory, and Italy were knocked out at the group stage in 2010 after winning in 2006. Spain are just keeping up the trend.

Many things can be brought up to explain Spain's performances like fatigue (which is bollocks), Diego Costa has a curse on him as he defected from Brazil to Spain, and that they rested on their laurels. I'm going for the latter. After a World Cup and a Euro victory, what else could Del Bosque have done? Where else can he take them? Nowhere, he should have left. He should have handed the position to someone else and make a transition from an old team to a new one. Instead they have stood still hoping the same formula of 6 years will carry them through but football isn't like that. Where Spain go from here is a mystery but rebuilding is needed, nothing too drastic but there need to be changes. The likes of Casillas, Xavi, Villa, Torres, and Xabi Alonso should be moving on now and that's not because I think they've had their day, It's because Spain have young quality to come in. De Gea, Thiago, Mata, and Isco are all top quailty players who should have the job of taking Spain on now and create a new identity. There is no doubt that Spain have got an incredible conveyor belt of talent coming through and if they keep true to their football identity their talent should do the rest. Spain could well have another world-beating team just a round the corner, as long as they give them the reigns and allow the golden generation to bask in former glory.
