Technically, Lydia Ko's August also featured the Women's British Open - which I covered in the July Mixtape - and on the back of finished tied for 11th at the major, Ko continued her solid run with two more top-20 finishes in August. Ko only played the two tournaments in August (two after the British Open), meaning that the August Mixtape features two top-20 finishes from two tournaments.
In the big scheme of things, remembering this journey that Ko has been on since settling into the grind of LPGA Tour life and being an adult, three top-20 finishes in a row is something to saviour. After the British Open, Ko played in the Indy Women in Tech Championship where she finished 16T and shot four rounds under par.
Ko then went on to finish 8T at the CP Women's Open, with three rounds under par one round even. Last month I highlight how Ko had seen her scoring average dip below 70.4 in all three July tournaments and this continued into August; 70.344, 70.221 and 70.139. This is now seven straight tournaments in which Ko has averaged under 70.4 and we need to go back to June, the LPGA Classic where Ko averaged 70.447.
Scoring average is super relevant because prior to this, Ko had scoring averages below 70.4 in just one of the 13 tournaments played this year. This included a run of 10 tournaments in which Ko averaged over 70.4, so for Ko to turn that around and now start a wee run of averaging below 70.4 is a sign that she is in a good spot, playing solid golf.
As always, let's see how Ko's major stats are looking compared to the last Lydia Ko Mixtape...
