Fast Break Report #9: Crocodile Hunters, TCB

ANBL.com.au

Townsville Crocs 80-87 NZ Breakers

This one was all business on the Sunshine Coast. The Breakers went on a 25-2 run in the first half and they never looked back. Well, maybe a nervous glance over the shoulder now and then, as you might walking home late through a bad part of town. But the important thing is that they never got stabbed.

It was a real team effort, too. Six players scored in double figures with Tom Abercrombie leading the pack, bagging 19. Uncle Kenny Ibekwe continued his rampage with 14 points and 9 rebounds, along with a nomination for NBL Player of the Week (VOTE HERE!). The way he’s just so zoned in on the rim recently, it really looks like he’s figured this thing out.

The worry was that another back to back game would bring a rusty performance but the boys were focussed from the start. Once they got hot they got hot at each end, and it didn’t look like Townsville would ever score again! This was the fourth weekend in a row with a double header and the Breaks didn’t miss a beat in the opening half. 35 points in the first quarter and a 10 point lead at the break.

Cedric had himself a handy night too, with 16/3/5, while Mika had 10/5/5 and Webster 13 points. The lead was 25 points at one stage, though the foot was taken off the pedal in the second half. It was a single digit difference for most of the last two quarters, though as soon as the Crocs got too close, NZB made a few shots to keep it PG.

The Breakers won the boards by 33 to 17 – almost double! We shot better, had more assists, steals and blocks and basically just took care of business. Now on to the next one.

Stocks:

Movin’ On Up Like Curtis Mayfield – I sincerely hope that this is the version of Ekene Ibekwe that we have for the rest of the season. He’s making exciting plays on both sides and he’s already a specimen with that 20 metre wingspan or whatever it is.

Goin’ Down Slow Like Howlin’ Wolf – NBL TV. Obviously Sky has to get their coverage from somewhere and if it has to be via the League’s streaming service, then that’s fine. But those fellas gotta sort out their service, lest it keeps cutting in and out like that. It’s easier to watch the Premier League than a Breakers away game these days and that’s saying something. No more streaky lines across the screen, please.

Key Stat

Tom Abercrombie’s 19 points came off just 7 shots. He was 6-7 from the field and 4-4 from FT. That’s the peak of efficiency right there, folks.

Play of the Game

This pretty, behind-the-back assist from none other than the main man, Mika Vukona! Cedric does the easy bit.
