The Dugout - March 19

MLB At The SCG

The Sydney Cricket Ground has gone through an Extreme Home Makeover (MOVE THAT TRUCK!) with the baseball heading to town. The Arizona Diamondbacks play the LA Dodgers in the season opener, which the league has started taking on the road (they went to Japan last year). Hopefully some day they make it to our shining shores. Both games are completely sold out, with the full MLB experience being promised. I mean, foot-long hotdogs and all.

Looks Like Yasiel Puig’s Pretty Much Figured out the Sport of Cricket

Spelling his name wrong. Real mature, Cleveland:

For the record, LeBron dropped 43 points on the Cavs in this game. Guess who’s laughing now?

Days Since The Philadelphia 76ers Last Won A Game:

49 and counting…

Here’s Barack Obama’s College Basketball Final Four Picks:

Men’s: Arizona, Florida, Louisville and Michigan State

Women’s: Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame and Stanford

Seems like a decent bet, 2 first seeds and 2 fourth’s in the men’s draw. But if it comes off, ya gotta be thinking Presidential conspiracy.

St Patty’s Day Limerick

There once was a man named LeBron

On the court he could do nothing wrong

Till his face he did see

On the clubroom TV

And he noticed his hair had all gone

Quote of the Week:

Good Week:

  • San Antonio Spurs – They’re working off a 10 game winning streak, and have recaptured the top seed in the west from Oklahoma City, with their lead now at 1 ½ games. Plus they topped 50 wins for the 15th straight year.
  • New York Knicks – Yep, whaddayaknow? The Knicks had a good week! Not only are they 6 games unbeaten, but old favourite (from his playing days at least) Phil “Zen Master” Jackson is officially their new president. Now, if they could only get Carmelo to sign a new contract…
  • Denver Broncos Defence – Forget about the million or so points they conceded in the Superbowl. Add in a DeMarcus Ware, an Aqib Talib and a TJ Yates and suddenly they look an even better team. On paper anyway.

Bad Week:

  • Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers) – It sounds like his season may be over after a bicep injury. We’ll find out more in a few days, but this will once and for all end any vague playoff chances the Cavs still had. Irving was averaging 21.2 points and 6.2 assists this season.
  • Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers) – They’re not making it easy on him, are they. Plus he’s off for some routine offseason ankle surgery.

Player of the Week:

Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans) – I’ve been meaning to single this fella out for a while, given his superhuman efforts in an otherwise not so flash Pelicans side. Against the Celtics on Monday he had 40 points and 21 rebounds (!), plus the standard multiple blocks. Davis leads the league in blocks with almost 3 per game. Those 40 points set a career high, beating the mark of 36 that he set in, well, his previous game. The Brow is here to stay.

Upcoming Dates (NZ Time):

April 17 - NBA Regular Season Ends
