Flying Kiwis – September 30

Flying Kiwis will keep you up to date on the endeavours of New Zealand sports folk overseas. Not the battlers, mind you, but the genuine overlooked and underappreciated superstars that for some ridiculous reason don’t get a look in on local media.

Chris Wood – Leicester City (English Championship)

No Woody again this week. He’s still nursing the injury that kept him out last week, but The Foxes did fine without him on this occasion. A David Nugent double gave them a valuable 2-1 win over Barnsley as they try to keep pace with QPR at the top. As it stands, Leicester’s 20 points are good for third. This was their third 2-1 win in four, after two late goals gave them a comeback league cup win midweek over Derby. They’ll play Fulham in the fourth round.

Up Next: Two away games, both very winnable. Yeovil town Wednesday morn, Doncaster Sunday morn (NZT)

Tommy Smith – Ipswich Town (English Championship)

Ipswich has stormed up to ninth on the Championship ladder after a solid 2-0 win at home to Brighton. Tommy Smith played a dependable 90 mins, though he was lucky not to give away a penalty for an apparent handball with 15 minutes to go. David McGoldrick scored both goals. Ipswich is now just 5 points out of the playoff spots despite a very poor start by Mick McCarthy’s lads.

Up Next: Double gameweek, yo. First a visit to Derby County (Who’ve just sacked manager Nigel Clough) Wednesday morning, then they head a little further north to find Sheffield Wednesday waiting for them early Sunday (NZT)

Marco Rojas – VfB Stuttgart (Bundesliga)

Stuttgart ran away with a 4-0 win at Eintracht, meaning they’re still unbeaten in the Bundesliga under new coach Thomas Schneider. However they were knocked out of the domestic cup midweek in a disappointing 2-1 loss. Marco Rojas is yet to return from his preseason injury.

Up Next: Werder Bremen (Wynton Rufer’s old team) comes to town Sunday morning, 2.30 am (NZT)

Winston Reid – West Ham United (English Premier League)

90 minutes for Winston Reid, but West Ham fell 1-0 to Hull City and are now just one point above the relegation zone. Defending their goal has been the easy part for West Ham; it’s tallying up the goals scored column that has eluded them. The sooner Andy Carroll returns the better, after a controversial 12th minute penalty cost The Hammers this one. They had a penalty shout of their own turned down also, which Sam Allardyce was notably pissed about.

Up Next: The Hammers visit a tough looking Spurs side next Monday morning (NZT)
