Fergie’s Chewing Gum – October 28
Premier League
Fergie Time is no more, but its legacy remains. Manchester United scored a 94th minute winner courtesy of Robin Van Persie for a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
It had looked like a typical Chelsea tactical win for a while there. United were arguably the better side, but both keepers played great to keep things level into half time. Eden Hazard made a majestic run through the defence but was superbly thwarted by David De Gea, though 36 year old Ddier Drogba popped up for the goal from the corner. Old boy’s still got it!
Mourinho brought on Mikel and set up to defend the lead, and they almost did it. But right at the death Angel Di Maria drew a free kick on the edge of the box. Ivanovic was sent off for a second yellow, and Fellaini (who started and probably had his best game in a United jersey) got up with a powerful header. Courtois got low and saved but RVP slammed home the rebound.
It was a weekend of dropped points for the big clubs. Liverpool were held 0-0 by Hull, and Manchester City lost to high-riding West Ham. The Hammers did great with their aerially dominant and physically powerful strikers. James Collins and Winston Reid were superb and Alex Song… there are no words. 2-1 was the score, David Silva scored a lovely one and City hit the frame a few times too.
Arsenal managed to win to spoil the trend with a 2-0 win over Sunderland. Alexis Sanchez getting both. Everton had a good 3-1 win at Burney too. Southampton are stunningly in second place, they beat Stoke 1-0. Who picked that after their transfer sell out?
Meanwhile Spurs are in a little trouble, falling 2-1 at home to struggling Newcastle. Aston Villa are officially awful again too, losing 2-0 to QPR. And a last minute Saido Berahino penalty saved a 2-2 draw for West Brom against Crystal Palace. Put that man in the England squad, Woy!
La Liga
There was only one match that anybody cared about this week in Spain: El Clasico.
It was the first meeting of the season between the old foes, and Real Madrid had home advantage. Luis Suarez started for Barcelona, his first game back from his chomping suspension; Gareth Bale still out for Real.
Straight away Suarez showed his new team that he’s got plenty of game. Wonderful vision to find Neymar with the switch, and the Brazilian cut inside and drove the ball into the net past Casillas. Early strike for Barca, but that’s not how things stayed.
In fact for a team that hadn’t conceded in the league all season, it’s probably fair to say that Barca were quite average. Four of their players picked up first half yellows, and were lucky not to concede when Benzema smashed a header off the post. Messi missed a great chance to extend the lead, before his old nemesis Ronaldo did level things from the penalty spot. Somehow Gerard Pique managed to handball a cross along the ground.
Madrid were the better team, playing with purpose and pace, and Pepe exposed some set piece worries for Barca with a goal from a corner after the break. When Benzema finished off a ruthless counter attack after Iniesta gave the ball away with 30 to play, it was all over. 3-1 to Madrid, who draw within a point of Barca at the top of the table, with Sevilla nestled between them. Atletico Madrid and Valencia also won to give the Spanish stuff a top 5 with just two points between them all.
Bundesliga
Oh, Dortmund. What’s the problem? Once more they failed to win, losing 1-0 at home to Hannover despite having more possession and 18 shots. The problem was only 4 of them were on target. Dortmund are just a single place off of a relegation playoff as things stand. 6 games without a win and 4 losses in a row in the Bundesliga. Yet they just won 4-0 away to Galatasaray midweek in the Champions League. Figure that one out.
The top of the table clash between Gladbach and Bayern ended in a 0-0 draw, while the game of the round was a 5-4 win for Stuttgart at Werder Bremen.
Ligue 1
Marseille, poor lads. They lost their 8 game win streak after a 1-0 loss to Lyon which isn't the best result considering PSG are now hot on their heals. PSG grabbed a 3-1 win against Bordeaux with PSG putting on a fine display without Zlatan Imbrahimovic and Edinson Cavani. The top 4 is rounded out by St Etienne who nabbed a 1-0 win against Metz.
The big news from the week's action was a 5 goal performance from Carlos Eduardo for Nice as they touched up Guingamp 7-2.
Serie A
Juventus were the big benefactors of the week's action in Italy as they had a solid 2-0 win over Palermo. However they were also graced with a 0-0 draw between 2nd place Roma and 4th placed Sampdoria. Udinese who sit in 3rd won 2-0 over Atalanta to round out the action in the top 4. Here's what Manchester United want from Juve's Arturo Vidal...
Outside of the top 4, Gonzalo Higuain was back at his best with a hatty for Napoli against Hellas Verona which Napoli won 6-2. AC Milan also missed a great chance to slide up the ladder but they could only muster a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina.
