A-League Week 9 With Ze Phibber
Week 9 has come and gone and this week would have been a good week for all the punters out there as the results all went as expected and there were no real upsets. Potentially only maybe with the Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne City game tripping some avid Brisbane punters up. Anyway there was a lot of action, some cracking goals and at least one absolute knob.
The first game of the week was between the Perth Glory and Sydney FC. Once again Perth showed the reason they are sitting nice and snug, perched on top of the ladder with a dramatic 2-1 win. Goals to Shane Smeltz (Syd, pen), Rostin Griffiths (Per) and Andy Keogh (Per, pen). The match really did deserve to finish 1-0 as both penalties I feel should not have been awarded. Maybe Perth's was a little deserved but still as soft as Clive Palmers stomach. However I really do love my boy Shane Smeltz and to be honest I think he knew the pen was bullshit cos his finish was the cheekiest/awesomist pen ever! What a legend, send the keeper the wrong way then chip if down the middle. Anyway it was not to be for Sydney and thanks to some poor marking from a set piece and a great finish for Griffiths, Perth were able to swing the momentum back in their favour and end up taking out the match.
The second match of the week was between Melbourne Victory and the Central Coast Mariners. The match finished 3-0 to the Victory who were definitely the dominant side. Goals to Bersart Berisha (Mel) (I have figured out that he reminds me of a bird, I hate birds! This explains why I dislike Berisha. It's not your fault mate you just look like a bird, change your face and we can be mates), Daniel Georgievski (Mel) and Connor Pain (Mel). Firstly this was the first time in almost 2 years the Victory have won 3 in a row, I thought that was pretty cray! And it was their first away win of the season. Daniel Georgievski opened up his goal account in this game and boy was it a large deposit. What a screamer. He did all the work, won the ball in the attacking third, dribbled forward a few yards then precisely picked out the top right hand corner, Liam Reddy had no chance. This result moved the Victory into within a point from the Glory.
The fourth game of the week was between the mighty Wellington Phoenix and the desperate Newcastle Jets. The match finished with Nix taking out the match 3-1. Goals to Joel Griffith (New), Nathan Burns (Pho), Michael McGlinchy (Pho) and Roy Krishna (Pho). The Nix looked to be in alot of trouble in the first half and were pretty darn lucky to only be a goal down at the half with Newcastle being denied twice by the woodwork. However it appeared the Nix had saved everything for the final 20 minutes. Roy Krishna sealed the match with an absolute bullet from 25 yards, a bloody great strike. People were saying his goal last week was brilliant well this one pissed all over it, what a finish! He stole Phibber's Goal Of The Week away from Daniel Georgievski who I thought was certain to take it out. Never the less well done Roy and Well done Nix who are now just one point behind 4th place Sydney FC.
The second to last game of the week was between Adelaide United and the Western Sydney Wanderers. The match finished with United taking the win 2-0. Goals to Marcelo Currusca (Ade) and Fabbio Ferreira (Ade). The Wanders were for lack of a better word, shit. United were all over them majority of the match and created a lot of opportunities and really should have put 4 past them. The Wanderers were let down early on in the match by their bone head of a captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley. Nikolai received a yellow early on in the match for a pointless, idiotic trip, and then as if to try and one up himself in the 18th minute decided to act like an imbecile and handle the ball. A cringe worthy red card which really put his team in the shit. As a result I have awarded him the Phibbers Knob Of The Week.
The final game of the week was between the Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City. The match finished with a sole goal from the penalty spot to Aaron Mooy (Mel) all that it took to take out the match. The finishing for both teams was really disappointing, especially City who created so many chances that really should have seen at least 3 goals. Brisbane where unlucky, I think the pen was relatively soft but still did warrant a trip to the spot. Daniel Bowles let Mate Dugandzic get the better of him and then sort of attempted a half challenge which Mate seized as an opportunity to go down. I think Bowles sort of realised that he wasn't going to get the ball half way through and as a result gave away a soft pen. If you're gonna give away a pen absolutely smash him and make it a little bit worth it. Anyway, both teams need to seriously work on their finishing as their performance this week was mediocre.
Another great week of footy done and dusted. Pretty stock standard week in terms of results. Was glad to see all games finished with someone claiming the win and no games finishing in stalemates. Not gonna lie, I'm moist with anticipation for next week's games especially the Victory v the Sky Blues which should be a cracker!
