Mourinho’s Notebook – Christmas Special!!!

The festive season has a special place in the football community. From the jam-packed fixture list at this time to the communal goodwill that sees the most bitter rivalries laid down for the betterment of humanity. At least until the Boxing Day games kick off anyway. Merry Christmas, footy fans!

The Star atop the Tree

The win over Stoke puts Chelsea three points clear on Present/Jesus Day, a famously dominant position. Three of the last four teams to be top at Xmas have gone on to win the league… but last season not only were Liverpool first but Arsenal were second. How did that work out for ya?

In the 22 seasons of the Premier League, 10 teams have been top at Christmas and gone on to win the title. 5 have finished second, 4 in third, 2 in fourth and one, Aston Villa in 1998/99, would finish all the way down at sixth. However in recent years it’s been a much bigger advantage than in the past. Chelsea held place in first in 2004/05 and since then 7 of the last 10 festive leaders have kept pace. Chelsea have done it all three times that they’ve led at this stage. Very ominous.
