The Dreaded International Window

We all hate it because it comes right after deadline day and we want to see those hot new signings kitting up for our clubs and then they make us wait an extra week so England can stumble to a win over Norway at Wembley. At least these internationals have given us some top moments to savour.

We had Argentina crushing World Champs Germany by 4-2 (leading 4-0 at a time), and that was without Lionel Messi! To be fair the Germans were missing a bunch of guys too. Angel Di Maria was the star man, setting up 3 goals and scoring the fourth.

Elsewhere that England game happened, with Wayne Rooney marking his first game as permanent captain with a second half penalty. It was a powerfully taken effort though it masked what was a pretty limp attacking performance, not just by Rooney but by everyone not named Raheem Sterling. England open their EURO 2016 qualifiers in Switzerland in a few days.

Plenty of teams enter new eras with these the first international games of the season and the first since the World Cup. Other things never seem to change though. See Zlatan Ibrahimovic break the Swedish record for international goals. Cheeky as ever!

Italy and Holland met with two new coaches marking their first games in charge. Antonio Conte left Juventus for the Azzuri, while Guus Hiddink returns to his homeland to fill the Van Gaal Void. It was Italy that came out on top though thanks to a pair of early goals (from Immobile & De Rossi). Spain went to France to see if they could get their new, post-Xavi/Xabi Alonso era off to a good start, yet Chelsea new boy Loic Remy’s goal was difference. 1-0 France. Belgium also beat the Aussies 2-0. Most teams play twice this window, so check the ol’ guide for times, as they say.

Deadline Day

It was madness. Pure madness. Falcao came from nowhere to secure a massive Man United deal, while Manchester home boy Danny Welbeck ended up at Arsenal. There were loan deals all around and teams like Hull and Southampton were surprisingly busy. ‘Arry Redknapp made his customary pair of former player signings and television journalists were assaulted all night. It was marvellous.
