Week 15 In The A-League With Ze Phibber

The break is over and the A-Lague is back and boy was it a good week. We saw plenty of action and plenty of goals. So many goals.

The first game of the week was between Adelaide United and the Newcastle Jets. From what little high the Jets may have gone into the break on they were definitely brought back down to reality with a crushing 7-0 defeat. Adelaide had a point to prove in this game having given Newcastle their only win of the season in round 11. With this result you might be left to think that they were a bit pissed at the fact they had lost to them just 4 rounds earlier. Goals to Djite(2), Carusca(2), Boogaard, Cirio, Isaias. A tally of 7 and a clean sheet, bloody good effort to Adelaide there.

The scoring started early after just 1 minute. There are too many goals to talk about each one here but Adelaide looked absolute class, some of the balls played through were really world class. The penaly was soft to be awarded and was saved but Newcastle had a shocker and entered the box prior to the ball being kicked! One goal I will talk about though was the absolute rip snorter to Isaias which was brought up the 7th and in absolute brilliant fashion. It would be rude not award that screamer the Phibber's Goal Of The Week. It was the perfect amount of pace and finesse and slotted right into the top corner. Newcastle are really going to have to step up their shit pronto.

The second game of the week was between Sydney FC and the Central Coast Mariners and it was another absolute goal fest with Sydney coming away victorious 5-1. Goals to Janko (Syd), Naumoff (Syd), Ibini (Syd), Janko (Syd), Major (Cen), Brosque (Syd). It would appear the break treated Sydney FC well as this was arguably their strongest performance of the year. Good all round team performance from Sydney, they attacked well, defended well and they did concede a goal but it was against the run of play and was a pretty great solo effort from Josh Rose who unselfishly and rightly so passed to Travis Major.

The third game of the week was a battle between first and 4th with Perth Glory hosting the Melbourne Victory. This game was definitely not shy of goals either with Perth rallying from 2 goals down to draw the match 3-3. Goals to Fahid Ben Khalfallah (Mel), Andy Keogh (Per), Bersart Berisha (Mel), Kosta Barbarouses (Mel), Rostyn Griffiths (Per) and Jamie Maclaren (Per). Perth showed why they are on top of the table with a great come back to draw the match. Melbourne came out firing and Khalfallah's goal at the beginning was a pinger and really set the tone for the match and outlined the Melbourne Victory were not going to play the game Perth wanted them to play. But as I said earlier Perth showed their class and proved that they are going to be a hard team to beat this second half of the season, especially at home.

The fourth game of the Week was between the Western Sydney Wanderers or should I say Winless Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne City. The match finished with City taking out the match 2-1. Goals to Yojiro Takahagi (West), Jacob Melling (Mel) and Aaron Mooy (Mel). Western Sydney looked good for the first 15 mins but that was about it. They scored a flukey goal in the 6th minute from a cross and then made it worse by doing a rather cringe worth celebration. After this City hit their straps and started playing some promising attacking footy. It's a bit of a shame that the Wanderers have continued their disappointing form but hey hopefully they can notch up a win soon. Actually it would be funnier if they went the whole season without a win.

The final game of the week was between the Brisbane Roar and the Wellington Phoenix. Much to my disappointment the Phoenix went down 3-2 ruining their 7 game winning streak. I blame the stupid 2 week break. They were in hot form prior to the break and looked a little sluggish out there on Monday. Goals to Roy Krishna (Wel), James Donachie (Bri), Brandon Borrello (Bri), Kenny Cunningham (Wel), Jean Carlos Solorzano (Bri).

The first half was pretty lacklustre with both teams only really creating a handful of chances and neither side being able to capitalise on them. Ernie must have said something to the boys at half time though because they looked like a new team when they came out of the sheds and quickly grabbed the first goal of the match thanks to a deft touch from Krishna. The Roar then grabbed 2 and looked as though they would take the 3 points until a huge goal keeper blunder from Michael Theo gifted the Phoenix an equaliser. I'm not sure what he was thinking it was like he thought he had all the time in the world. And then when he realised he didn't he just kicked it strait into Kenny Cunningham. As a result of this classic goalie blunder I have awarded him the Phibbers Dick Of The Day. Unfortunately the goal was not enough to share the glory and much to the delight of Brisbane's home crowd the Roar where able to take the 3 points.

Another week gone and we have are now into the business end of the season. It's getting down to the do or die stages. There is a bit of wiggle room for the top 6 who are all looking comfortable of reaching the knockout stages, however if the Roar continue and build on their performance from this week we could see the gap close up. Exciting stuff.
