Flying Kiwis – February 1

Anna Leat – West Ham United (English Super League)

You know that fantastic save that Anna Leat made last week against Everton, tipping the ball onto the crossbar while it was still nil-all? Here’s the definitive angle of that beauty...

Onwards now to a Wednesday nighter in London, Chelsea versus West Ham making up for an earlier covid postponement. Squeezing in one more fixture in which Anna Leat gets to participate rather than just watching from the bench. Same team that put four past her in the League Cup a couple games back, Pernille Harder with a hatty that evening. One week later they were back at it for take two.

There was a freaky one early when Anna Leat spilled a corner kick, about the first time she’s faltered in the air since she began this run of games, and Niamh Charles pushed it over the top amidst a crowd. Lucky break there... but luck soon reverted back to skill as Leat got her positioning spot on to parry away a Pernille Harder header at the back post and then gobbled up an Aniek Nouwen header later in the same phase. She also made a good low stop as Sophie Ingle headed on a free kick. Did the same as Pernille Harder lined up a crack from the edge of the area on the break. Anna Leat delivering the goods.

West Ham had a couple nice moments on the counter and from set pieces but nothing that they were able to convert, only having three shots with none on target in the first half. But thanks to Leat’s steady hands (as well as an Erin Cuthbert shot fired just wide and a Harder header nearing half-time which was powered narrowly off target) the Hammers were able to hold things scoreless as the orange slices were served. Definitely second best but you expect that against the defending champs. Arguably the main difference between the teams in that first half was that Chelsea were blatantly missing Aussie striker Sam Kerr whereas West Ham’s Aussie keeper, Mackenzie Arnold, was being more than adequately covered for (West Ham are also without Tameka Yallop but so it goes).

Unfortunately Chelsea are stacked with super players so they brought on Beth England at the break. Five mins into the second stanza, Erin Cuthbert cut inside from the right and pumped a shot towards the near post which Leat got down for with a smart stop... but before she could even look up, England was already on her to tap in the rebound. Not one you’d lay all the blame at the keeper for but Leat’ll probably feel she could’ve pushed it further away. Gotta have high standards.

Leat was back at it, gathering a Kirby shot on the turn without dramas minutes later. Then a simpler one from Kirby further out. huck in another comfortable effort off Cuthbert with a but over twenty mins remaining and the saves were certainly tallying up. The issue for West Ham was that they couldn’t seem to retain any possession in order to threaten that equaliser. As long as it was still only 1-0 they were in the hunt but to be honest they never really came close.

Finally in the 82nd minute England and Kirby combined to set up Erin Cuthbert whose driven effort seemed to take a wee loop off of the laces of Zaneta Wyne as she slid in to try and block it. Regardless, the ball flew into the bottom corner beyond the diving reaches of Anna Leat. That was the clincher. Chelsea won it 2-0.

Luckily there was also an FA Cup match to play on the weekend. West Ham with a trip up north to play against Sheffield United and something odd happened in the sixth minute of this match: Anna Leat conceded a goal from open play against a team other than Chelsea. First time that’s happened to her...

Nothing whatsoever that Leat coulda done there but her defence might’ve helped her out a bit more. Granted it was a great attack from the Blades leading to this Bex Rayner goal.

However West Ham had already scored a goal of their own at that stage via Melissa Fillis (4’), tapping into an open goal after Katerina Svitkova had hit the post from a tough angle. They then took back the lead in the 21st minute when Claudia Walker followed up from a Svitkova shot that had been saved but not held (Svitkova was everywhere in this one).

Still had some messy moments in as Sheffield United spurned a several fantastic chances to equalise with only their poor finishing to blame... but Walker scored again from close range in the 57th min and then Dagný Brynjarsdóttir added a fourth four minutes later. Much more dominant second half from West Ham as they went on to win it 4-1. Anna Leat with only one proper save to make although it could have been a very different afternoon had the Championship club remembered their shooting boots. You can watch the highlights on FA Player.

In more unfortunate news, West Ham’s kiwi manager Olli Harder had to miss that game after testing positive for covid. Assistant Paul Konchesky took charge in his absence – rotten timing coming the day before Harder’s birthday...

Also you may have heard that Australia were knocked out of the Asian Cup at the quarter-final stage the other day. Lost 1-0 to South Korea with Ji So-yun with the 87th minute winner. Wee bit funny considering that the Football Ferns beat South Korea in their most recent game... yet less funny when you realise that it means Mackenzie Arnold (and Tameka Yallop) will be back with West Ham sooner than anticipated. Meaning that this little window of opportunity for Anna Leat as WHU’s number one goalkeeper may have come to an end. If it has, well, this is only the beginning for Anna Leat who did nothing but impress in these five matches.

Ria Percival – Tottenham Hotspur (English Super League)

With 80 minutes played, Spurs were in a fantastic position against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round. Angela Addison had given them the lead with about an hour played and it was no less than they deserved after shading a close game.

Rehane Skinner had sent out a very strong side against their fellow WSL competitors and on another day they’d have already been up by half-time as a Rachel Williams header from an inch-perfect Ria Percival corner kick was cleared off the line after 17 mins. Rosella Ayane wasn’t able to get an early ball in from Jess Naz on target soon after. But Spurs then upped the ante in the second half leading to that Addison goal.

Addison had almost scored moments earlier from a great flowing counter attack where she was shut down as she tried to round the keeper after dashing down the centre... no surprises that it began with some all-action Percival work in the midfield stepping through pressure and releasing a pass near halfway even after she’d been fouled, allowing for the advantage to be played. That one wasn’t to be but Addison wasn’t ever missing from four yards out after a brilliant burst of speed from Jess Naz got her to the byline for the square ball and the simple tap-in in the 61st min.

And yet Spurs weren’t able to lock down that lead like they usually do. 82nd minute of the match, a sloppy touch at the back from the usually flawless Shelina Zadorsky allowed Leicester to equalise as Shannon O'Brien stole the ball away and then finished beautifully into the top corner. Naz then smashed one into the outside of the post right at the death, so close to a dramatic winner, and it was off to extra time instead.

Where Leicester City scored after only 40 seconds. Sloppy from Spurs as a long ball was allowed to bounce in the shadow of the penalty area and Sophie Howard lifted it first time on the stretch above keeper Becky Spencer for the lead. Spurs gassed it for a leveller, Percival nearly supplying one but Ashleigh Neville’s cross was slightly beyond her reach. She also had another shot on target later on in extras. Then the Foxes made sure of it with a runaway third in the final seconds after Tottenham had committed players forward. Esmee De Graaf running it over the line. 3-1 to Leicester and the FA Cup run ends there for Spurs. So close and yet, in the end, so far. Highlights on the FA Player.

120 busy minutes for Ria Percival here at least. No rest for the wicked. Tack that onto a season in which she’s played every single minute of league action so far...

Meikayla Moore – Liverpool (English Championship)

FA Cup weekend went pretty well for the Reds. Up against fourth-tier Lincoln City it was never really a contest. The only frustration was that it took them 40 minutes to finally find the breakthrough but once Leighanne Robe headed in her first Liverpool goal in her 80th club appearance they very quickly ran away with it. Robe nodded in a second, the London buses effect for her second Reds goal, then Katie Stengel added a mint finish to make it 3-0 by the half.

As always happens when the cup stuff rolls around, Meikayla Moore was boosted into the starters in that typical back three. Didn’t have much defending to do as Lincoln City only had one shot all afternoon but there’s always a bit of scope for the central defenders to step forward in this formation and a short way into the second half she lifted a left-footed cross into the area and this happened...

First goal of the campaign for Mouse after bagging two of them last season. Extremely fortunate with the way that Lincoln’s young keeper misjudged it (to be fair, the same goalie made three or four superb saves throughout the rest of the match) but hey you take them however they come. Incredibly, Robe went on to complete her hat-trick soon afterwards from the penalty spot following a scramble in the area during which Moore had hit the post from close range amongst the crowd. Then Charlotte Wardlaw scored another late on. 6-0 was the final score. Liverpool easing into the fifth round. FA Player highlights over here.

Niko Kirwan – Calcio Padova (Italian Serie C)

Niko Kirwan wasn’t even supposed to be there. Had the international breaks applied to his situation then he’d have been away with the All Whites adding to his three caps. Instead the Italian Serie C stuff played through (as did several European leagues) and Kirwan was held back by Padova as they continue their scrap for promotion, able to start as they played Pro Patria at home. And you already know who scored the equalising goal for them. A back post header just a little bit reminiscent of his first international goal.

Pro Patria had taken the lead midway through the first half when Gianluca Nicco tried his luck from outside the box and the Padova goalie, Antonio Donnarumma (brother of PSG’s Gianluigi), pushed it in off the post. It seems to have gone down as a Nicco goal though some places did report is as a Donnarumma OG. Either way, he shoulda saved it. Padova had already hit the post once by then though Pro Patria had also gone very close with a block in the six-yard box denying them.

It was then only another last-ditch block that kept Padova from going down by two straight after... however they found some momentum soon after and finished the half the stronger team – closest effort being a Niko Kirwan worm-burner which was tipped onto the post by the goalie. Then Kirwan popped up with that lovely 67th minute header. Then substitute Alfredo Bifulco curled in a beauty of a strike for the 89th minute winner. Full game for Niko Kirwan. Also a massive result as Calcio Padova try to keep pace with first-placed Südtirol who also won this weekend.

Would have been nice to have Kirwan available for the All Whites fixtures but hey if he’s gonna be kept behind then he might as well make the most of it and that’s exactly what he did with his second goal of the Serie C season. Bloke even did a big ol’ interview after the match... however you’ll need to speak Italian to understand him.

Olivia Chance - Celtic FC (Scottish Premier League)

Little bit of a pumping of the brakes after winning 12-0 and 7-0 last week but there was certainly nothing wrong with a 3-0 win over Hamilton as Celtic try to keep pace with Glasgow and Rangers ahead of them on the ladder. Charlie Wellings put them up a goal inside two minutes and although they were definitely travelling a couple gears below what they got up to last week the Ghirls did eventually find a couple more to clinch the points.

Both those second-half goals came after Chance had already been subbed off with twenty to play – she was the final change as Celtic mixed it up to find that second banger. Chloe Craig eventually did the business from a corner kick in the 78th min. Then three mins later she scored a tap in for the third. Only drama was top scorer Wellings having to go off with a sore ankle at the break – hopefully just precautionary.

Alex Greive - St Mirren (Scottish Premiership)

Three outta three for Greivesy. The third game since he signed for St Mirren saw him make his third appearance for the club, getting twenty minutes in a 1-0 win over Aberdeen. Wasn’t the most open game you’ve ever seen but a 61st minute curler from Connor Ronan was enough to split the two teams and earn St Mirren the three points. Aberdeen had a lot more of the ball but never managed a shot on target. Quite a turnaround after losing 4-1 away to the same opponents back in December.

Greive was a lively substitute presence once again. His energy off the bench has been the main standout so far, albeit it’s fair to say there were a few loose touches in there against Aberdeen too. A lot of their ‘attacks’ after he came on were pretty cautious as they tried to hold on (successfully) for the win. Angled balls into the corners rather than towards the goal, that sorta thing. That tends to curb one’s ability to get shots away but the important thing is that they won and Greive played his small but helpful role in it all.

St Mirren had gone eleven games in all competitions without a win prior to Greive being signed yet they’ve won all three that he’s featured in. 2-1 over Dundee in the Prem, 2-0 over Ayr in the Scottish Cup, now 1-0 over Aberdeen in the Prem (AG’s first home appearance). And of course he was called up to the All Whites on the same day too. Andre De Jong unable to get to the UAE from South Africa due to travel restrictions thus Greive was given the summons, making his debut off the bench late on against Jordan (pretty familiar scenario for him all of a sudden). Hell of a rapid rise for the 2021 Northern League MVP.

Up Next: Should be back in time for Hibernian vs St Mirren on Sunday at 4am (NZT)

Katie Rood - Southampton (English National League Southern Premier)

What do ya know, Roodie scored her first goal for Southampton last week and at the very next opportunity she was on the scoresheet again. This time from the penalty spot in an 8-0 win over Chichester & Selsey. Rood played off the bench and it was already 5-0 when she was brought on after 63 mins. She then scored the sixth, given the honours from the spot after Shelly Provan had won the penalty, and set up the seventh with a through ball for Sophia Pharoah to complete her hatty. Chichester & Selsey had two red cards moments before the full-time whistle.

Yet another convincing Natty League South win for Southampton and, to make things even better, first-placed Ipswich could only draw 0-0 at home with Gillingham. The Saints are currently in third, four points behind Oxford and eight points behind Ipswich but they have 3-4 games in hand on each of them so it’s all in their own control still to lift this title and get promoted to the second tier Championship – although they’d also need to beat the National League Northern Prem champs to get there.

Just in case they do get promoted, their FA Cup tie with Championship club Bristol City was a very useful test of where they’re at. What’s more is that they got to play it at the club’s main ground: St Mary’s Stadium. Plus also Bristol City is a former club of Katie Rood’s. Lots going on... although she had to wait until half-time before she could get involved. Named on the bench initially but subbed on at the break to replace captain Phoebe Williams.

Not a lot happened prior to that sub as the Saints were impressively stable against their higher-division opponents. And they continued to lock things down as the game dragged on and extra time began to look inevitable. Bristol City had hit the post early second half plus Saints keeper Kayla Rendell had made a couple top saves. Lucia Kendall managed to lob the BC keeper with a crazy overhead kick with ten to play but the ball went just wide. Then Bristol City appeared to have stolen it right at the end via Aggie Beever-Jones only for sub Milly Mott to somehow get back and clear the ball away off the line. Off to extra time after all.

One minute later this happened...

Ella Morris with the 91st minute finish. Katie Rood with the flick-on assist (we’ll credit it to her anyway). Southampton had the lead... but victory was still a fair distance away, the Saints unable to double their lead as Leeta Rutherford turned one off the post before disaster appeared to strike as they conceded a 110th minute penalty.

No dramas. Jesse Wooley spooned it all the way over the bar to the delight of the home crowd and Southampton held firm the rest of the way to take the 1-0 win, get in there. Into the fifth round. What a win.

Not a bad draw either, getting divisional rivals Ipswich Town instead of one of the big donnies from the Super League such as Liverpool got with a home tie against Arsenal. West Ham have a winnable one away to Reading too.

Up Next: London Bees vs Southampton on Monday at 3am (NZT)

Ali Riley - Angel City FC (American National Women’s Soccer League)

Trade alert: Ali Riley has been flipped to Angel City FC with her old team Orlando Pride getting a third round 2023 draft pick and $15k in allocation money in return. Not a huge haul to be honest but she’s a 34 year old fullback who doesn’t play for the USA national team so it was never gonna be. The important thing is that she’s now in a much better footballing position.

The Orlando Pride were pretty poor in the second half of the 2021 season and since then have well and truly flicked the switch into rebuild mode. They’ve hired a head coach who’s experience has mostly come at college level. Alex Morgan was traded to San Diego. A lot of their best players are around Riley’s age (Marta, Sydney Leroux, etc.). They probably won’t be up to a whole lot this year as they try to integrate a few new players and get younger overall. But Ali Riley doesn’t have to worry about that any more.

Orlando Pride General Manager Ian Fleming: “On behalf of the Club, I want to personally thank Ali for her time, effort, and energy throughout her stay in Orlando. She is a professional in every sense and has been a pleasure to work with. We wish her the absolute best in the future.”

Riley was given a new 1-year contract by Orlando as the off-season began but was left unprotected when San Diego and Angel City had their expansion draft. She didn’t get picked despite both teams literally having turns where they passed which makes this a tad weird. Angel City could have signed her cheaper weeks earlier... but they still got her pretty cheap in the end, regardless. The move means that California native Ali Riley gets to return to her birth state, playing out of LA for a club whose ownership is predominantly made up of female celebrities (led by Natalie Portman and a few businessfolks – including Serena Williams’ husband).

That side of things gets a wee bit cringey but the football side has been impressive so far. They hired a genuine coach in Freya Coombe with Eni Aluko as the sporting director. Both English, both clever footballing minds, both avoiding the Biggest Name Possible trick (which an LA-based, celebrity-owned team could easily have blindly stumbled into). Christen Press is their star signing. Julie Ertz is there as well to go with a heap of solid NWSL experienced players. Many of whom are defenders but they definitely had need for a reliable fullback who can play on either side. Thus in comes Ali Riley. Sweet as.

Up Next: The preseason Challenge Cup begins in mid-March

Nik Tzanev – AFC Wimbledon (English League One)

With half an hour to go of their midweeker against Ipswich, it was anybody’s game. The Dons hadn’t had a lot of the ball but they’d been sturdy enough at the back and if they could snatch a goal then they’d be in a great place for victory. That first goal would be massive... and they very nearly had it early second half when Ben Heneghan’s effort from a corner was turned onto the post by a defender. So close.

Sadly that didn’t happen and instead it was Ipswich’s Wes Burn who got that crucial goal when it finally came around. 60th minute, streaking past on the right side of the area and smashing a shot towards goal which Tzanev got a touch on but couldn’t keep from rustling the net. The Dons had to get on the attack in search of an equaliser but the fine margins weren’t going their way and with five mins left Wes Burns scored again firing sharply in off the post after streaking forward on the break. 2-0 to Ipswich (who got a red card late in stoppage time). Disappointing night at the office.

And they still haven’t won a game since the turn of the year after being held to a draw against Shrewsbury Town on the weekend. Ayoub Assal headed them into the lead after a give and go with Ethan Chislett only 13 minutes into the contest but they weren’t able to capitalise on some solid moments – best of all being Jack Rudoni blasting narrowly wide early second half – and Shrewsbury found an equaliser through Daniel Udoh in the 58th minute. Another one where Tzanev almost pulled off a great save but the ball still crept in off the post. Can’t blame the goalie when a dude is turning and getting a shot away from six yards out.

That led to a desperate last half hour during which two out of form teams both threw caution to the wind in trying to win the game... but neither was able to find that next goal. 1-1 was the final score which keeps the Dons exactly one point clear of the drop zone with a game in hand.

Up Next: Another double game-week with Cheltenham at home at 8.45am on Wednesday and then Charlton away at 4am on Sunday (NZT)

Marko Stamenic - HB Køge (Danish Division 1)

Probably to be expected, but Marko Stamenic has rejoined HB Køge on loan for the rest of the Danish season. He played ten times for them before the winter break, scoring once, before returning to FC København for some friendlies and a training camp. Stamenic featured prominently for FCK in the preseason and it was the same in the midseason – getting ninety minutes in a match against Hvidovre just before leaving to link up with the NZ national team. International duty probably accelerated things by taking him out of København training and thus the loan has been confirmed now. Gives him plenty of time to crack back into things with HBK after the All Whites stuff.

The ideal situation would have been that he went back to Copenhagen and broke into their first team but realistically there are just too many dudes ahead of him in that pecking order right now. He was playing great for Køge so it makes more sense to keep things going. Next season will hopefully be the one for Marko. In the meantime he’ll be a key player for the Daniel Agger-managed HBK as they try to jump up into the top half of the table before things split for the championship rounds.

FCK sports director Peter Christiansen: “Marko gained a really positive development during his first stay at HB Køge, where he played a lot of senior matches. The goal of this agreement is for him to continue that development in a good environment, and then we look forward to him returning this summer.”

HB Køge director Per Rud: “We are really happy that FCK has agreed that Marko can continue with us. It is optimal for us. Marko showed his high level in the autumn, where he did well and made his mark on the team. He knows the club and is a good boy who fits in well here, so it is the best possible solution for us.”

Up Next: Still got a month of friendlies before the winter break ends

Otto Ingham, Robert Sabo & Kees Sims - Ljungskile SK (Swedish Ettan Södra)

The Ole Football Academy production line never falters. This week came news that winger Otto Ingham, defender Robert Sabo, and goalkeeper Kees Sims are off to join Swedish Division 1 side Ljungskile SK for the 2022 season. All three were among the top performers for Western Suburbs last year now all three – the oldest of whom is Ingham who turns 20 next week – have surged into the pro ranks.

This move came about through a strategic partnership between LSK and Ole Academy which was sorted out last year, effectively a lesser version of their existing links with the likes of Torslanda (Sweden) and Helsingor (Denmark). In terms of standards of play, it’s somewhere in between those two.

Division 1 is the third tier of footy in Sweden. LSK finished sixth in the southern conference last year having been relegated from the second tier in 2020 (a year after being promoted from Div1). They spent the 2008 season in the top flight Allsvenskan. Should be a team with expectations of challenging for promotion back to the second tier this season and hopefully Ingham, Sabo, and Sims can be immediately impactful. They’ve got Francis De Vries (and current free agent Joel Stevens) to look up to there. FDV signed with IFK Värnamo when they were a Division 1 club and they’ve just had back to back promotions.

Otto Ingham: “I’m super excited to get over to Ljungskile SK and get to work. I think it’s a great opportunity for myself and the boys to show what we can do. I feel super grateful to be part of the Olé family and to have called it my second home over the last three years. I especially want to thank Ben [Sippola] and Blake [Jones] for making this opportunity possible and being by my side the last few years.”

Robi Sabo: “It’s going to be a big challenge. A big thanks to all the players and staff members that have been a part of the journey through the years I have been at Olé. Olé has always been a special place to me and my family, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of the academy.”

Kees Sims: “I’m very excited and looking forward to starting my journey in Europe as a footballer. It’s always been a goal to go there and it almost doesn’t feel real that it’s finally happening. Ole has been a great place to develop as a person and footballer. It has provided me with many opportunities I am grateful for and has helped me grow to who I am today.”

LSK coach Erik Lund: “We’re excited that Otto, Robert and Kees are joining us at LSK. These are three young and ambitious players who want to take steps forward in their development. They can now acclimatize to Ljungskile and football in Sweden, which will be instructive and which means that they will get better and better every day.”

This is also one level higher than where Torslanda currently find themselves. 2021 saw that lot finish seventh in their section of the fourth tier of the pyramid with Ole players Harry Moss-Edge, Dom Woolridge, Owen Parker-Price, Ryan Feutz, Josh Rogerson, and Sean Bright all featuring regularly. Bright initially went over to trial with Helsingør who didn’t sign him but did help him land on his feet at Hillerød a tier below. Bright only played a couple of times for them before joining up with the Torslanda project instead. Feutz and Rogerson went over together. The first three fellas have all been there for three years now.

Up Next: New season begins in April

Zac Jones – Haverfordwest County (Welsh/Cymru Premier)

Here’s a funky one. Miramar Rangers keeper and former WeeNix gloveman Zac Jones is heading off to Wales for at least the next few months. His contract with Welsh Premier League club Haverfordwest County AFC is until the end of the current season – Haverfordwest County having three more games to play in the first phase of the competition (they’ve played 19) before the league splits into promotion and relegation rounds for the remainder (32 games in total).

HC are second to last and thus currently in serious danger of relegation... but they’re only two points off safety with a fair way to go. Fingers crossed that Jonesy will see them right. To date they’ve split the goalkeeping duties between Welsh veteran Lee Idzi and American/Polish GK Wojciech Gajda. We’ll see how it goes.

Up Next: Aberstwyth vs Haverfordwest County, Wednesday at 9am (NZT)

Myer Bevan - Cavalry FC (Canadian Premier League)

Another one for the list: Myer Bevan is leaving Auckland City and moving to Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League. Beaten semi-finalists in 2021 (after finishing second on the ladder), whereas the other kiwi in the comp – ol’ mate Moses Dyer of Valour FC – saw his team fall just short of the playoffs.

Interesting move from Bevan for sure. He always scored in bundles for Aotearoa youth teams and has two goals in six games for the All Whites as well as winning a Premiership golden boot with Auckland City... but his professional career has yet to take off. Didn’t crack it with the Vancouver Whitecaps, didn’t crack it with TS Galaxy in South Africa.

Now he’s back in Canada, Alberta this time, to play in the CPL. Bevan is a dual Canadian/NZ national so no dramas there as he takes up a domestic roster spot. With Moses Dyer having been converted to a striker with Valour to great goal scoring success... best case scenario here is a Flying Kiwis shootout for the golden boot.
