Flying Kiwis – February 8

Sarpreet Singh - SSV Jahn Regensburg (German Bundesliga 2)

Sarpreet Singh was on pace to potentially lead the entire German second tier in assists at the halfway stage of last season... then he got injured and that dream fizzed out. Well, Singh made his long-overdue return to competitive footy last week off the bench for Regensburg and while that game had already been spoiled by a red card and a couple concedessions long before he joined in the activities, this week was different. This week he was thrown into the starting eleven and within two minutes he’d gotten his assist tally going thanks to a sweet corner kick delivery...

Jan Elvedi with the goal there. Good from that guy.

Regensburg were at home against Arminia Bielefeld and desperately in need of some points. Their form was awful leading into the winter break and last week’s effort against Darmstadt (admittedly the top team in the division) didn’t help matters at all. This early goal sure did... though it wasn’t long before Arminia drew level. 14 minutes gone, very good finish from Sebastian Vasiliadis.

Arminia began this round on the bottom of the standings meaning that neither of these teams were entirely sure of what they were doing and thus it proved to be a close battle. Singh was much more involved than last time, immediately offering his team a creative source that they hadn’t otherwise had. Wasn’t perfect or anything. He needs more time to get his combinations going and you could tell he’s still getting back up to speed by how often he was caught on the ball. But overall he looked good. He looked sharp. And in the 77th minute he seemed to have helped his team into a timely lead as his gorgeous deep free kick was headed in by Elvedi once again... only for the VAR to rule that the bloke had been offside. Goal denied.

Instead Regensburg went on to concede in the 85th and 91st minutes, both goals being scored via Fabian Klos headers. 3-1 to Arminia Bielefeld who launch themselves above their opponents with these three points. Regensburg have lost three games in a row and now linger in the relegation zone.

Ah well, here’s a throwback for their best hope of a change in fortunes...

Up Next: Up against a former team, FC Nürnberg vs Jahn Regensburg at 1am on Sunday (NZT)

Chris Wood - Nottingham Forest (English Premier League)

Game two for Chris Wood at Nottm Forest was a lot better than game one, gotta tell you that. And not only because Nottingham Forest won. On debut against Bournemouth, Chris Wood had looked starved out of the action and on a different wavelength to his new teammates... which made a lot of sense given he hadn’t even had a chance to train with his new club yet. In game two at home against Leeds, The Woodsman played 72 minutes without a shot attempt but he looked much more at home and the team around him performed better on the way to a 1-0 win.

Performed better... but not exactly best. To be honest they got bossed around at home against a fellow relegation candidate. Leeds always bring the energy and against a Forest team that’s still embedding several new players – including Premier League debuts for Keylor Navas in goal and Danilo in midfield (buzzy how Chris Wood and Keylor Navas played against each others as the star players for their national teams in that intercontinental playoff... now seven months later the fates have conspired to make them club teammates) – and while Nottm Forest did have a few spells of possession in there, most of it was spent stuck in their own half.

The long ball towards Chris Wood was an instant outlet which helped that quest, although he wasn’t his usual dominant self against former Leeds teammate Liam Cooper (those two have been bros since way back), with Wood only winning six of his 14 total aerial duels. But at least it was something to stretch the pitch and dodge the high press. Wood was able to hold the ball up a few times. Kept lurking around that penalty area too, clearly with goals on his mind, and the front three operated more effectively thanks to a slight change in formation with Brennan Johnson playing alongside Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White as a lone ten (often stepping up between the strikers to form a high block three out of possession).

But the crossing and the rest of it remains a work in progress. Much of Forest’s attacking threat came on the counter attack where Wood just didn’t have the pace to keep up with the likes of Johnson and Gibbs-White, particularly not when he was already dropping deeper as an option. Having said that, the goal they scored came from a set piece. Out of the blue. Long free kick sent inwards towards Woodsy and the other big fellas where it was glanced away by a Leeds defender... yet only as far as Brennan Johnson on the edge of the box. That bloke swung his foot through the dropping ball for a superb goal after only 14 minutes.

Leeds otherwise bossed the first half but some poor finishing and a couple great stops from Navas meant they got nothing to show for it. Forest then made two changes at the break to alter their shape a little and while Leeds had just as much possession as they’d had before, they were no longer getting the chances to show for it.

Wood was replaced by Sam Surridge inside the last twenty. Good effort for little personal reward for the fella but the three points for the team will soothe that. An absolutely massive win which lifts them up to thirteenth on the ladder, five points clear of the drop zone as things stand. Fun fact: according to Opta stats, NF’s xG of 0.27 in this game is the lowest tally by a winning team this season. Any way you can, aye? Leeds manager Jesse Marsch was sacked in the wake of this result (which, to be fair, seems harsh on Marsch).

Oh yeah and also if you’re craving more words about the Woodsman, here’s something to keep you going...

Rebekah Stott - Brighton & Hove Albion (English Super League)

It was Aston Villa vs Brighton & Hove this weekend but there was no Anna Leat in sight as the teams were announced. She’d sat out the FA Cup game last weekend and it turns out that was down to a little injury still hadn’t cleared up in time for this game. Hannah Hampton wore the gloves instead. Manager Carla Ward had said that Leat’s fitness was going to be a late decision and it seems she didn’t quite get there in time.

Carla Ward: “Anna Leat missed out last week because of a problem with her back. She’s still touch-and-go. Everyone else came through the AFC Fylde game okay so we’re in a good position.”

But you know who did play? Rebekah Stott. Fresh from scoring six minutes into her belated return from injury (a game which also marked her first game in England since her cancer diagnosis), she was chucked straight into central defence for the Villa game. Already made an impression on new coach Jens Scheuer. Stott was picked to partner Guro Bergsvand at CB.

She played well too. As we all know from the Anna Leat beat lately that Villa team is in some prime form having made some really good signings and yet struggling Brighton were able to come away with a precious point from their trip. Villa did have more of the ball (60% possession) and more of the chances (12 shots compared to 5) but Brighton did really well to restrict them. Highlights included a leaping Stott block off an Alisha Lehman shot... although it was from the resulting corner that they then conceded. 33 mins gone, keeper launched at the cross but missed it and the ball struck Kayleigh Green and went into her own net.

Brighton didn’t drop their standards though. They continued to hang on for the rest of a tricky half and then were able to slow the game down in the second... before Julia Zigiotti Olme bagged an equaliser with quarter of an hour left. Brighton had turned the ball over pressing high. Hampton was able to save the initial effort from Veatriki Sarri but Zigiotti Olma followed up by smashing home her volley. 1-1, final score. Brighton sneak back above Reading on the ladder. Rebekah Stott with a very assured, very disciplined return to the WSL looking like she’d never left. How good.

Meanwhile, here’s some inspirational podcast chat...

Up Next: Weirdly they play Aston Villa again, at home this time, on Monday at 3am (NZT)

CJ Bott - Leicester City (English Super League)

CJB is first choice for Leicester City now, that’s beyond doubt. First choice for club and country. So as Manchester City rolled into town with their star-studded line-up there was CJ Bott ready to go at right back. This game was played at the King Power Stadium, the club’s top stadium where the Premier League blokes play. It was also one of the games picked out for widespread telly coverage. Big occasion. Courtney Nevin started on the left of the back four making it an Anzac fullback duo for the Foxes, although only one of them got singled out on the broadcast as a player to watch...

Bott was immediately into the game, getting touches on that right edge and looking to progress the ball. It was her great work in winning a tackle and gassing it forward, then in winning the ball back after hunting down a through ball, that led to Leicester’s first major chance. Five minutes in and Hannah Cain headed Aileen Whelan’s first time cross on target... but it was pushed away by keeper Ellie Roebuck.

That chance did prove to be extremely against the run of play. Both City wingers (Chloe Kelly & Lauren Hemp) forced saves on either side of that Cain chance then before long Khadija Shaw and Dayna Castellanos had also gone close. Hemp soon had another shot saved while all the while Janina Leitzig kept showing what a shrewd loan signing she was last month – making six saves within the first twenty minutes. Castellanos then put another one off target. Manchester City were looking imperious... finishing aside.

It was Hemp vs Bott on the right side, a very tough matchup but the kiwi defender did her job as well as could be expected. Did get beaten once or twice although Hemp will do that to anyone. CJB also kept LH on her toes up the other end, closing her down to win a sneaky corner kick – there were definitely some sharp transitional moments from LCFC in amongst all the defending and Bott played her part in several of them. Nothing that led to any chances that compared with Cain’s header but it was enough to release the pressure valve and when the whistle sounded for half-time the home crowd were pretty stoked to have it still at nil-all.

Typically, City raised the tempo in the second spell. Laura Coombs was subbed on at the break and now even those sneaky counter attacks were being shut down. It was constant pressure on the LCFC goal and in the 63rd minute an excellent header from Bunny Shaw inevitably broke the deadlock. Eventually Chloe Kelly added a second (74’) with a wonderful finish cutting in and shooting off her left. LCFC did ride their luck with some poor City finishing but when they were finally beaten it took two banger goals to do so.

2-0 was the final score. Could have been a lot worse given that City had 74% of possession and 32 total shots (17 on target). Have to admit that Leicester did superbly to keep it level for the first hour – Leitzig made an incredible 15 saves. Funnily enough, the LCFC goalie was the only player on the team with more touches than CJ Bott.

CJB also had the equal most tackles, equal most loose balls recovered, and equal most clearances in that Foxes side. And the most fouls conceded. It was a very different style of game to the Brighton win in the previous WSL fixture yet another eye-catching performance from Bott... who actually finished the game in central midfield. Seen her play on the wing a bit for both the Foxes and also the national team but this was a new one. Only moved there for the six minutes of injury time, but still.

Marko Stamenic – FC København (Danish Superliga)

No surprises there, already laid it out in last week’s edition that this was a done deal simply awaiting confirmation. Now we’ve got it. Crvena Zvezda (aka Red Star Belgrade) did try to grab him on an immediate basis but FCK asked a higher fee than they were willing to pay for an impending free agent so now here we are. Stamenic will see out the remainder of his contract with Copenhagen and then at the stroke of midnight as that one expires he’ll switch to Crvena Zvezda on what we now know will be a four year contract.

FCCZ sports director Mitar Mrkela: “We are very pleased with the arrival of Marko Stamenić. We’ve brought in a young player with a Serbian passport who will be a bonus next season, and yet has already had the huge experience of playing in the Champions League. We are talking about a great potential and a footballer who does best in the midfield. Considering his qualities, there is no doubt that he will quickly fit into the style of play of Red Star. He chose Red Star as his next destination in his career, and he comes from an extremely stable club, which makes us extremely proud. I believe that Stamenić has a bright future ahead of him, and that we have done an excellent job by bringing him in”

Bit of good news there for the Red Star fans, who’ll have been shocked by an awful weekend’s result as they only drew 1-1 with Vojvodina. Okay, not that awful, but it was only the third game this season they’ve failed to win. 17 wins and 3 draws from 20 games. Undefeated in domestic footy this season – their last domestic defeat came on 27 October 2021 away to Radnik. There’s little doubt they should retain their SuperLiga championship this term and make it back to the Champions League qualifiers as a result... the signing of Stamenic (and a few others lately) is all about stocking up and making it to the UCL group stage next time, something they last achieved back in 2019-20.

In the meantime, Copenhagen have begun their work at the Atlantic Cup friendly tournament in Portugal, with Stamenic used as an 83rd minute sub, one of six subs used on the day. FCK won 4-1 against Elfsborg and you can see some highlights right here.

Up Next: More Atlantic Cup, against Viking at 8.30am Weds & against AIK at 8.30am Sat (NZT)

Ryan Thomas – PEC Zwolle (Dutch Eerste Divisie)

That’s not good. Ryan Thomas was replaced after 21 minutes of PEC Zwolle’s game against Jong Ajax, clutching at his hamstring before hitting the deck with it and having to be subbed off. Similar to the elbow injury he suffered a couple weeks ago, at least it’s not his knee. Muscle injuries are potentially to be expected as he gets back into the swing of footy after so long out so hopefully this was more of a precaution than anything. He’s obviously gonna play it safe. The game ended 0-0, by the way. Zwolle still possess a healthy seven point lead at the top of the ladder – although Heracles do have a game in hand.

Up Next: Probably won’t see Thomas here but Zwolle vs Jong AZ is on Saturday at 8am (NZT)

Vic Esson - Rangers FC (Scottish Premier League)

It was starting to get annoying seeing Esson on the bench every game, playing sporadically across the past month and without a league appearance since November. Esson’s only recent start was an 11-0 SFA Cup win over University of Stirling. That’s one appearance from seven games (including unused sub duty in a League Cup final victory). Rangers have dual number ones with Scottish international Jenna Fife splitting duties with Esson, and the kiwi keeper has had her own streaks of overwhelming starts - particularly in the Champions League qualifiers. It swings back and forth over the course of a season.

Regardless, it was clearly about time that Vic Esson got another SWPL start and her coach must have agreed. Hence Esson started in goal away to Dundee United and sure enough she responded with yet another clean sheet. Her sixth in seven starts, the only SWPL goal she’s conceded this season was in the 1-1 draw with title rivals Glasgow City. Fife has nine clean sheets from ten starts, allowing her first goal last week in a 4-1 win over Aberdeen. Yeah, they’re not bad at the whole defending thing, those Rangers.

Esson was one of seven changes from the Aberdeen win. They’re spreading the minutes throughout the squad at a busy time of the season. Having said that, a number of those changes (including Esson) were important players during those UCL quals a few months back so don’t think it was a case of picking a reserve team. Proper rotation on display. Anyway... not much to say about the game itself. Kayla McCoy scored a double (15’ & 34’) in the first half while Tessel Middag (72’) and Kirsty Howat (86’) added further strikes. Esson didn’t have much to do as her team were several classes above and could have won by several more, although she did get off her line sharply to prevent a couple early chances. 4-0 the final score.

Up Next: Friday at 8.45am against Hibernian (NZT)

Olivia Chance - Celtic FC (Scottish Premier League)

Onwards we go after a huge week in Scotland. Been awhile since all four kiwis in the SWPL got starts in the one round but it happened here. Liv Chance got the full ninety for Celtic against Aberdeen, picked in her now standard left wing-back role and forcing the first proper opportunity of the game there with a strong shot on target. She’d earlier tried a sneaky one looking to chip the keeper from distance.

Difficult yakka for Celtic in this one, at least at first anyway. It was a game without too many moments in either direction... until stoppage time of the first half when Chloe Craig headed in from a corner kick to five Celtic the lead. That eased the pressure and in the second spell they were able to have a bit more fun with it. Chance angled onto a through ball to force another save. Then from the subsequent corner kick, Claire O’Riordan headed in to double the lead on 57’. Natalie Ross later confirmed the points on 71’ when she finished off the cut back from Clare Goldie after Chance had played her in down the line.

3-0 was the way it ended. More points on the board keeping pace with the rest of the top three.

Up Next: Away to Spartans on Thursday at 8.45am, then it’s some Scottish Cup funk away to Boroughmuir Thistle at 1am on Monday (NZT)

Meikayla Moore – Glasgow City (Scottish Premier League)

Starts have also been slippery to grab onto for Meikayla Moore in recent times. She featured a lot at the start of the season but seemed to find herself as the backup after a few months. MM had only started two of the previous eight SWPL games for Glasgow City... but the team has a new manager these days, with Leanne Ross in charge on an interim basis after Eileen Gleeson left back in December, and Mouse does seem to have been getting more of a focus since then.

That included a solid effort in a hefty 8-1 win over Partick Thistle this week. Claire Walsh (4’), Priscila Chinchilla (9’ & 35’), Linda Motlhalo (45’), Kinga Kozak (45’), Lisa Forrest (64’), Lauren Davidson (73’), and Megan Foley (89’) all did the damage. Thistle did pull back a consolation with ten to go, though Moore had been replaced after 78 mins with her team up 7-0 so she wasn’t out there when they conceded that one. She was out there to set up goal six with some mean marauding overlap work though...

Catch the full highlights in these here parts. That victory meant that all three of the title challengers had comfortable wins and with that the top of the table looks pretty much as it did beforehand. Glasgow City are slightly ahead but not by much – it’ll all come down to how the remaining head to heads go between the trio (of which there are two – both home games for Celtic against each of the others). Remember there are only two Champions League qualifying spots on offer.

The results in big three meetings so far:

  • Glasgow City 2-1 Celtic

  • Glasgow City 1-1 Rangers

  • Rangers 0-0 Celtic

  • Rangers 0-0 Glasgow City

Up Next: Glasgow City away to Hearts on Thurs at 8.45am, then home to Aberdeen in the SFA Cup at 3am on Mon (NZT)

Katie Rood - Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Premier League)

One more here, gotta recognise the full quartet, and that’s Katie Rood who has become a regular starter for Hearts. Nothing changed as they played Motherwell on the weekend however this one wasn’t quite as much fun as the other three games. Hearts were off their usual standards, creating plenty of chances in the early stages but failing to put them away (probs because none of them fell for Roodie)... then went behind after quarter of an hour when they made a mess of some defensive shielding before Lauren Doran-Barr charged down a keeper’s clearance and nudged the ball into an empty net.

It almost got worse. More opportunities of their own continued to go to waste, then another sloppy moment at the back saw Motherwell lift a shot at goal which dropped onto the crossbar. Could have been down two despite dominating... not good. So there were three changes made at half-time and alas Katie Rood was one of them. Sacrificed for the greater cause. Hearts did rally back to draw 1-1 thanks to slick finish from Monica Forsyth after 60 mins – she’s the one who’d replaced Rood at HT. Should have won but at least they didn’t lose. Highlights here.

Up Next: Two games coming up, first they’re home to Glasgow City in the SWPL at 8.45am on Thurs, then they’re away to Partick Thistle at 7am on Monday in the SFA Cup (NZT)

Andre De Jong – Stellenbosch (South African Premier Soccer League)

Haven’t heard from ADJ in a wee while, that’s because he hadn’t been playing basically at all since the South African PSL started back up post-World Cup. He did make the Royal AM bench once just after Christmas but didn’t play. The last competitive minutes he got were back in October. He’d been one of a number of new signings by Royal AM and initially seemed like he might be one of their regulars, even scoring a few goals, but he steadily slipped out of the rotation... leading to this transfer.

Stellenbosch Football Club. He joined them sitting dangerously close to the drop zone but that might not be the worst situation, given that De Jong has had some back luck with picking teams that are unexpectedly better than they should be and quickly stop playing him. AmaZulu were in a similar position to this in his first season and prior to his broken foot he was getting some decent game time. Then the next year they finished second in the nation and he barely featured. Royal AM were a mid/lower table team until the season before he signed when they randomly finished third and suddenly had some cash to spend. Stellenbosch aren’t in any danger of being amazing in the short term and that should suit our boy just fine.

SFC Head Coach Steve Barker: “It is really exciting to welcome Andre to our club. He is a player we have admired and followed closely over the last few seasons and once we learned that he was available on the market, the Club acted quickly to complete the transfer. A current international with New Zealand, Andre brings a lot of experience to the team. With his strong technical ability to create and score goals, we feel he fits perfectly into our system of dynamic players who can influence the game. We are looking forward to him making an immediate impact on the team’s performance this season and beyond.”

Andre De Jong: “I am very pleased and excited to be joining Stellenbosch FC. I have always felt that they are a team that plays a positive and entertaining style of football. The Club, the administration, coach Steve Barker and the players have all been very welcoming and made me feel right at home already. It’s a beautiful part of the country and I am really looking forward to pulling on the Stellenbosch shirt.”

The actual transfer went down two weeks ago but it took a couple of games before things came around for him. Didn’t feature in the 4-1 loss to Orlando Pirates that extended the Stellies winless streak to nine games. Nor did he feature in the 3-2 win against Cape Town City that broke the streak. But he did feature in their most recent match, given not only a debut but a starting debut and lasting 63 minutes in a 2-1 win over Chippa United.

Tragically, the club has since been rocked by the awful news that 19 year old local prospect Oshwin Andries was killed in a stabbing. Andries was the club’s youngest ever goal scorer and recently captained the South Africa U20s. He’d played ninety minutes in defence for Stellenbosch in the previous match and the stabbing incident allegedly happened later that evening. He’d been treated for his wounds, even attended training over the next couple of days (although obviously didn’t take part), yet appears to have then died of complications. Players didn’t find out until after the Chippa game.

Up Next: Stellenbosch vs Swallows on Sunday at 2am in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 (NZT)

Ben Waine – Plymouth Argyle (English League One)

Says a fair bit about how much Plymouth Argyle rate the bloke that Ben Waine’s first League One start came this past weekend in a top of the table clash against Sheffield Wednesday. Unfortunately that selection didn’t quite have the desired outcome as Wednesday scored early through Callum Paterson (7’) and that set things off on a bad note. Wednesday’s high energy was forcing Argyle into mistakes and Ben Waine got isolated up front by himself. The ball barely came his way and when it did he couldn’t manage to keep it. Ultimately he was subbed off as part of a double change at half-time with a switch in formation in mind. Didn’t help that they’d also had two players leave the game with injuries in that first 45.

The Pilgrims were a bit better after they mixed things up but couldn’t find an equaliser. The 1-0 defeat means their 12-game unbeaten away streak comes to a grinding halt, while Sheffield Wednesday also leapfrog them at the top of the ladder. Equal on points, Weds ahead on goal difference, Argyle having played one game more. There is still a six point gap to third place though and the top two get automatic promotion. Also there are 17 more games left to be played so no need to freak out.

While it clearly wasn’t the starting debut that Waine-o will have been day-dreaming about as he walked onto the pitch, his manager made a firm point of backing his kiwi striker afterwards as well as pointing out the tactical reasons for Waine’s selection and also why he subbed him...

Steven Schumacher: “We just felt with Waineo down the middle and Tyreik there that we might be able to hit them on the break because sometimes at home if they pass it out they can be caught on counter attacks. They didn't really pass it out that much, Sheffield Wednesday, they went a bit more direct and we didn't get our counter attacks and breaks that we expected so we had to change it at half-time. We just felt that getting Sam on there and Ryan up there might give us a little bit more to build from. Ben Waine is going to play in loads of these big games against big centre-halves like Aden Flint so he will learn from the experience.”

Up Next: Plymouth Argyle vs Portsmouth on Sunday at 4am (NZT)

Nik Tzanev – AFC Wimbledon (English League Two)

Nik Tzanev: “The whole international thing is massive for me, because I'm born there, and I grew up there. The more I can play for New Zealand, help them progress and get more recognition as a footballing nation, that's something I want to do for sure. That would be one of my main goals.”

Good yarns in there from NT. Unfortunately his three-game clean sheet streak came to an end in a 1-0 loss to Leyton Orient. Good competitive match against the first placed team in the division, with a few class saves from Tzanev, which despite the defeat bodes well for the Dons moving into the last third of the campaign. If they can push on from here then a spot in the playoffs is definitely not beyond their capabilities. Tzanev has 11 clean sheets in League Two this term – fifth most in the league.

Up Next: Home to Carlisle at 4am on Sunday (NZT)

Max Crocombe - Grimsby Town (English League Two)

Tzanev didn’t get a cleanie this week... but Max Crocombe did. Took care of business in a 3-0 win away to Crewe Alexandra to leap ahead of them on the table. Took the lead bright and early through John McAtee (3’) and then added to that when George Lloyd struck (31’). Tom Dickson-Peters then polished off a convincing win (84’) in which Crewe never managed a shot on target and thus Crocombe didn’t have a proper save to make. Exactly the confidence boost that they needed with their FA Cup replay against Championship side Luton Town coming up in the midweek.

Up Next: FA Cup fourth round replay, Grimsby vs Luton, Weds at 8.45am (NZT)

Logan Rogerson & Ollie Whyte - FC Haka (Finnish Veikkausliiga)

Tough loss last week, going down 2-1 in a game in which Logan Rogerson missed a penalty (that Ollie Whyte had won), but no dramas because FC Haka got up and running in the Liigacup group stage at the second attempt. A 1-0 win against Ilves and although the winning goal was a banger scored by Oiva Laaksonen it was Whyte who dished the ball over in his direction so you can chalk that up as an assist...

Other than that, ninety minutes for both Rogerson and Whyte. OW had a good chance with a back post header early in the second half which went slightly wide. Rogerson slipped in behind onto a reverse pass minutes later but ran out of room to beat the keeper. By the way, Haka won another penalty in this one, happened in the 75th min not long before they scored for real. Rogerson was off the duties this week after missing from the spot last game so new Argentinian signing Juan Lescano took over... and also missed. Might come back around to Rog next time after all. Highlights here.
