Flying Kiwis – April 4

CJ Bott - Leicester City (English Super League)

Some wicked form since the turn of the year has given Leicester City a chance to dodge relegation despite losing all of their first eleven games and CJ Bott has played a huge role in that journey. But in order to actually achieve that they have to make sure they bank points against the teams around them. This weekend they hosted Reading in arguably their most target-able game remaining. Absolutely massive. A potentially decisive game in both teams’ seasons.

CJ Bott started at right back on her second game back from injury. Didn’t see heaps of her initially as Reading started brightly and then Leicester came back into it by playing narrow and direct... though soon enough though we began to get those storming CJB runs up the right edge. We also saw Reading continuing to threaten from set pieces. Then we saw Sam Tierney side-foot home a volley from a Courtney Nevin left-back cross on 20 minutes to give the Foxes the lead. Tierney lost her marker and then also lost her boot in amongst it all.

LCFC were sharper and more aggressive yet that had the flipside of tallying up the foul count (although the first yellow went to a diving Reading player). Bott drilled a low shot on target. There were plenty of those charging changes of direction to burn past an opponent and into space from CJB as well. Keeper Janina Leitzig was flawless against those Reading set pieces. It was a first half of few chances but heaps of energy and Leicester City were good value for their lead... right up until they blew it. Just before the break, Reading with a low cross, first shot was deflected, second shot buried by Charlie Wellings as it conveniently fell her way. Scores even at HT.

It’s not always easy to respond to a set back like that but full credit because Leicester stepped it up in the second half. Tierney went close to a second on 62’ but the keeper stuck a foot out at the back post to turn that shot wide. Leicester played some lovely stuff up both wings but space in the middle was rare. Carrie Jones made a great run for one of those rarities but couldn’t finish with two attempts. Tierney had consecutive headers from a corner kick saved on the goalline. Remy Siemsen hit the post after breaking down the right channel following some tidy work from Bott earlier in the move. The Foxes were making all the play but they needed something to stick.

Reading were stuck deep in their own half. Any time they threatened to break out, Bott and company shut them down just as quickly and spurred into more attacks of their own. Hannah Cain and Ruby Mace both put efforts over the top as we ticked into the final ten minutes. Bott put a brilliant ball over the top for Cain who couldn’t finish 1v1. Then as we ticked into a whopping twelve minutes of stoppage time (lots of repeated injury stoppages do add up) Bott went close herself with an opportunistic long strike that dipped wide.

Then you know what? In the 96th minute and Carrie Jones found a pocket in the area and drilled that thing home for the crucial, crucial goal they’d been searching all second half for. Of course there were still six more minutes to go (we eventually ended up playing until 104 minutes once injury time subs and that goal were accounted for)... but they survived all that. A defensive header did flick off their own crossbar towards the very end but all’s well that ends well.

2-1 to Leicester City. Huge celebrations for an enormous win. A win which, get this… lifts them off the bottom of the ladder and thus out of the relegation spot! Plus it’s also revenge for the reverse fixture back near the start of the season when they were leading 1-0 against Reading only to concede on 90’ and 90+2’ and go down 2-1. Brighton do still have a couple games in hand on LCFC but they’re far from the only team in the relegation battle with only three points separating the bottom four places (and a kiwi on three of those four teams – prayers up for Reading to go down).

Elsewhere Anna Leat was an unused substitute again as Aston Villa were brushed aside 3-0 by title-challenging Chelsea. That’s not the most encouraging result heading into the international window considering that they play Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals straight afterwards.

Strangely the other semi-final is between Manchester United and Bright & Hove Albion… who also played against each other this round, also leading to a one-sided victory for the favourites, and also with a New Zealander as an unused sub. Rebekah Stott not getting on the park as United won 4-0. Brighton only used two subs, though to be fair it was 1-0 after 65 minutes and the last two goals weren’t scored until near the very end so ‘twas closer than it appears. Neither Stott nor Leat have played since the last international window but both are fit again and were included in the current Football Ferns squad.

Meanwhile Tottenham Hotspur had a brutal defeat equally as bad as the loss that Reading copped. Conceded a winner deep into stoppage time (90+4 in this case) going down 2-1 to Everton which pretty much hauls the Merseysiders out of the relegation conversation whilst keeping Spurs very much in it. Thankfully all is not lost because help is on the way...

Now that’s a sight for sore eyes (and knees).

Up Next: Leicester City’s next game is away to Chelsea on 24 April at 1am… but don’t forget those FA Cup semis a week earlier, MUFC vs Brighton at 4.15am on Sunday 16 April and Villa vs Chelsea at 1.15am on Monday 17 April (NZT)

Abby Erceg – Racing Louisville (American National Women’s Soccer League)

When Racing Louisville traded for Abby Erceg, they knew what they were doing. They wanted a veteran leader and a top level central defender to help take this young franchise to the next level. Someone with the mana to lift those around them. That was evident last week in a classy defensive performance as RL held Houston Dash to a 0-0 draw on the road. This week it was evident in a different manner.

Louisville were 2-0 down after barely half an hour of their home opener and looking in big trouble. Washington Spirit’s Ashley Hatch had scored both goals, each coming after some less than stellar midfield play from RL and also each involving Hatch beating Erceg’s CB partner Rebecca Holloway. Nothing had changed as the teams hit the sheds and the expectation from the home crowd seemed to be that this was only going to get worse. But that expectation was based on the pre-Erceg Louisville. Things have changed. RL turned around with resilience and within two minutes of the restart this had happened…

Back in it thanks to an Abby Erceg goal. An absolutely towering header from a corner kick, trademarked Erceg areas right there. She’s been utterly dominant in the air so far so this was bound to happen sooner rather than later – could get a Tuiloma type goal-scoring breakout this year considering how many class set piece deliverers this team has. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Less than twenty minutes later, Brazilian signing Amy Borges slammed in a banger of a left-footed half-volley to level things up and there ya go. Both teams had chances to score again. Neither came particularly close to fruition. Washington picked up a red card with about a minute of stoppage time remaining and the game ended up as a 2-2 draw. That means consecutive single-pointers for Louisville… but the fightback in this one should give them all sorts of confidence. Highlights here.

Abby Erceg: “It shows a lot of fight from the girls. We’re happy with the result. It’s not the result we want at home but to come back from two goals is pretty good… honestly, we weren’t going in completely down and out. We knew that it was only two goals, we just needed one to get back in so we tidied up a couple of things tactically and we knew that the first five minutes had to be really aggressive and really hard and really fast.

I think the result last week, against Houston away grinding that point out, and then [today] coming back. We showed that we can come back and that’s really important because we’re not going to give points easily. Heading into the next game that’s huge for us. Last year this team might have given up and been like, eh we’re 2-0 down, it’s going to end up 4-0 and that’s how it goes. But we said right from the very start that we want to rewrite the history at this club and make this stadium really hard to play at. The girls did a really, really good job of that today.”

Here’s that goal again from a different angle...

Up Next: After the international break there’s a good old Flying Kiwis derby as Angel City host Racing Louisville at 2pm on Sunday 16 April (NZT)

Ali Riley - Angel City FC (American National Women’s Soccer League)

Sticking with the NWSL, the other kiwi captain had a big game too. It was away to Orlando Pride, the team that brought her back to America a couple years ago. Plenty of player turnover since then but there are still a couple of ex-teammates on that Pride team. Always a funky experience up against the old club... and this turned out to be a very funky game.

Ali Riley lined up at right back again which seems to be her position this year with Paige Nielsen on the left. No dramas either way. Unlike last week there wasn’t the same emphasis on wing-play from ACFC’s opposition hence Riley ended up having a fairly quiet time of it while the teams traded hopeful shots and midfield turnovers, although things sparked to life when the Angels won a penalty late in the half. Alyssa Thompson fouled in the area... and Scottish international Claire Emslie slotted that thing from the spot in the 39th minute.

That lead nearly disappeared in first half stoppage time when Adriana ripped one off the post. There was a great block by Riley early second half too. But the lead really did disappear early on 51’ when Messiah Bright ran between two centre-backs to finish for Orlando. But ACFC who were able to regain some control after that, looking like the team more likely to find a winner as the game fizzed towards its conclusion.

With five minutes remaining, Ali Riley played a slippery one-two to get to the by-line. Great composure to straighten up and pick a pass across goal but unfortunately the assist disappeared when Scarlett Camberos shanked her shot. However a follow-up attempt struck the arm of a defender and Angel City had a late penalty. Get some. Looked like a rough one on Orlando’s Haley McCutcheon who was bracing her fall with an arm behind her body... but then ACFC got robbed by the VAR last week so these things swing in roundabouts. Alas, Claire Emslie missed the spottie this time. Good save by Anna Moorhouse. Easy come, easy go.

But we weren’t done there. Further drama was to follow, don’t you worry. Angel City stormed forward in stoppage time and won another penalty. This time for a foul although the offside flag went up after the spot had been pointed to so the VAR had to peek... and went with the offside. Seconds later Riley had to step across the defence to prevent a chance through on goal the other way. Absolutely frantic footy.

Onwards we went. Angel City won a corner deep in stoppage time. Then they won another. We were beyond the eight minutes added on by now but there was still time to take it. In-swinger from Emslie. Katie Johnson at the near post with the glancing header. Goal. 99th minute winner for Angel City. It was the last play of the game as the final whistle went upon the kickoff to serve Angel City FC with the 2-1 win on the road.

You can tell how exhausting that all was just by Ali’s celebration for the match-winner...

Also, here she is on the Disney Channel...

Chris Wood - Nottingham Forest (English Premier League)

Steve Cooper: “Chris Wood is out for the season. He’s picked up an injury during the international break.”

Sixteen words that we didn’t want to have to read. No more Woodsy this season, he’s been shut down having made just seven appearances for Forest since joining on loan in January. That transfer will become permanent in the offseason as the triggers have already been met so it’s not as though we’ve seen the last of him in a Forest jersey but it will be several months before that happens again.

There was some confusion about this as Cooper claims he suffered the injury whilst on international duty. Wood had gotten a kick on the thigh prior to the break which left him in doubt. He travelled anyway and participated in a couple training sessions but wasn’t fit to play the first game and flew back home before the second one. But this injury isn’t the same one that he copped against Spurs. It’s a separate injury, also a thigh complaint but on the other leg. After several scans both in Aotearoa and England he’s undergone surgery and now that’s that for the season.

More from Steve Cooper: “[Wood]'s actually had an operation on his thigh. It was something that was a really unfortunate situation, at the training ground. We got the scans from New Zealand and then made second and third checks, as you do with these things, once he got back. The player was obviously involved in the process, as always, but we had no alternative other than to operate. So we're looking at a long period out. It will be middle of pre-season, if we're lucky, not the start. If it all goes well then we're looking at mid-July.”

This is extra frustrating because it feels like he’s ducked out at a low point. Nottm Forest are stuck in a relegation scrap that he could have contributed to but instead the abiding memories from his Forest stuff this season is of Wood throwing himself about with little service and minimal connection with his teammates. There was a clear plan from the manager to adapt their style of playing towards a target man but it hasn’t yet clicked and it’s not a good sign that he may miss a chunk of preseason too. That prep time will be crucial for him. Not that we have any idea yet whether it’ll be Premier League preseason or Championship preseason.

Steve Cooper once again: “As a team, we hadn't created loads of chances for him - not that he had any complaints or anything like that. But when you have somebody who has scored goals in the Premier League before, you want to create chances so they can recreate that. It's a pity we've not been able to do that this season. But we'll support him as best we can. He's a very positive guy. It's just an unfortunate situation that does happen in elite sport. We'll give him the best recovery. For sure, he'll commit to that 100 percent; having worked with him now for a few months, I can see how professional he is. Hopefully he gets back at the right time.”

Olivia Chance - Celtic FC (Scottish Premier League)

One of those days, aye? Free bevvies after another classy midfield performance. Celtic were against Partick Thistle and pocketed a smooth enough 2-0 victory, although it really should’ve been a lot more. Within the opening three minutes Jacynta had struck the crossbar and Taylor Otto had a shot deflected over. Otto thought she’d opened the scoring ten minutes later but her back stick finish off a corner kick was disallowed for a foul. Kit Loferski also hit the post with a header. Nuts how this thing was still 0-0 after thirty minutes.

Celtic did soon find a way through that counted. Slick counter attack, Amy Gallagher played in behind by Jacynta and AG beat the keeper with aplomb. Almost made it two before the half as well, Liv Chance with a sneaky one-two to find space out wide and her cut back to Shen Mengyu was slammed only barely past the post. Then Chance seemingly did have an assist ten mins into the second spell with a pinpoint cross for Caitlyn Hayes to head in from six yards... but Hayes was flagged offside. So many Nearly moments for Celtic along the way. Helpfully they did get the benefit of an own goal with twenty to go when Thistle unable to deal with a drilled ball across the goal-face. That’ll do it.

The win sees Celtic keep pace with the rest of them in the second of the ten championship rounds. Glasgow City remain at the top with an eight-point lead after they beat Hearts 2-0. Still no Meikayla Moore in their squad so gotta think she’s in big doubt for the Footy Ferns games (unless she’s been dropped altogether in which case that’s a bigger problem). Hasn’t played for a month now. Katie Rood did get 45 mins as a half-time sub for Hearts but they spent most of the game defending so not much going on there. As for Vic Esson and Rangers...

Up Next: Glasgow City vs Celtic on Monday 17 April at 3.10am (NZT)

Vic Esson - Rangers FC (Scottish Premier League)

Vic Esson got herself a tune-up game for Rangers just in time for Footy Ferns duty. No surprises to see her starting after the goalie error from Jenna Fife that cost Rangers the win against Celtic last game. This was against Hibernian at home and while it took some hard graft from RFC to find their rewards, defensively they were never in doubt. Across the ninety minutes Hibs had just one shot attempt. Only one. It was early in the second half and it did cause Esson some troubles diving across to her left but the shot struck the outside of the post and rebounded to safety.

Other than that... they left some chances on the table uneaten but goals for Kirsty Howat (39’) and Samantha Kerr (67’) still set up a 2-0 victory. This was the ninth SWPL game that Esson has started this season and she’s kept eight clean sheets (the other being a 1-1 draw with Glasgow City back in November). Esson also played in a 0-0 draw with Celtic the week after that though Fife has mostly had the big domestic games, whereas Esson played all four Champions League qualifiers. Will be curious to see which way it goes over the rest of the term as Rangers push for second place. Fife has 12 clean sheets from 15 league starts with five goals conceded.

Up Next: After the internationals it’s Partick Thistle away, 11pm on Sunday 16 April (NZT)This

Michael Boxall – Minnesota United (American Major League Soccer)

Not an easy game here, no way. Minnesota United were away to St Louis City, a new team with some fired up local support and a five-game winning streak, and let’s just say it was a good thing that Boxy was back in there after missing the last game for international duty. He and the lads had plenty of defending to do in the first half against a flowing SLC team and it was just fortunate that St Louis couldn’t seem to keep a shot down under the crossbar.

That changed in the second stanza but then so did MNUFC. By rights it should’ve meant they took a 55th minute lead but after rounding the keeper Ménder García could only hit the post (then Luis Amarilla had a shot shanked wide from the rebound). Tempers got frayed in a feisty game. The home fans had never experienced anything less than a win before and weren’t sure what to think. It was a great atmosphere. Minnesota Utd were pushing for that goal but for a long while it didn’t look like they’d find a way through... until they got some help via a hilarious penalty incident.

What happened was that Amarilla was running into the area against two defenders. The first stepped in front of him and won the ball cleanly. The second, inexplicably not realising that his bro had already done the deed, slid in and hacked Amarilla down. Amarilla then dusted himself off and scored from the spot. The Loons led after 78 minutes. After that it was simply a matter of holding out the in-form team in the competition... which they were able to do thanks to some Boxall physicality and a switch to a back five. Also a stoppage time shot over the top from Samuel Adeniran as he held off Boxall on the turn. Had to bury that one and he didn’t. 1-0 to Minnesota United.

Huge upset victory away from home against a team that had scored 15 goals in their first five matches. Boxall was immense within the clean sheet. His battle against João Klauss, a Brazilian striker who’d already scored five goals this season, was box office stuff. Minny remain undefeated after five matches with three wins and two draws.

And you know what else? Check the bench of the latest MLS Team of the Week...

Up Next: Away to Chicago on Sunday at 12.30pm (NZT)

Bill Tuiloma – Charlotte FC (American Major League Soccer)

Nothing to worry about with the injury, turns out Bill Tuiloma only missed one game and he was back this week for a 2-2 draw away to Toronto FC. That meant lining up at CB for tough trip north of the border in some brutal weather with an icy breeze hooning its way across the park. But hey a job is a job, gotta do it.

That wind was a major factor in Toronto’s opening goal, an olympico from Federico Bernardeschi. Bro scored directly from a corner kick with an inswinger making use of that swirling breeze. Only six minutes gone at that stage. Keeper George Marks made a couple of very good saves to ensure it remained at only one for a while longer but just before the half came another corner kick goal for the home side. This one a Michael Bradley flick header.

Must have been a two-goal wind. Because just like in that Erceg/Louisville game, the team losing at the half struck back super quickly. Didn’t get a Tuiloma goal, sadly, but Ben Bender’s deflected shot on 50’ will do. Twenty minutes later Kamil Jóźwiak produced a striker’s finish getting goal-side of his marker and Charlotte had a share of the spoils. That’s three games in a row without defeat after losing three in a row to start the term. Fantastic resilience. Maybe even a hint of an Erceg influence from Billy T as well, on the lowkey?

Up Next: Real Salt Lake away at 1.30pm on Sunday (NZT)

Moses Dyer - FC Tulsa (American USL Championship)

Chur fella. Stoppage time equaliser from Moses Dyer (who did get credited with the goal even though it was parried back and put in at the second attempt by a teammate – ball had already crossed the line). It was his first since joining Tulsa, although he did have one disallowed for a marginal offside in the previous game. Dyer’s been getting good minutes for Tulsa so this was inevitable.

That previous game was against Pittsburg Riverhounds and was also notable for the debut of Trevor Zwetsloot for Pitt. In case you were wondering where that fella popped up – this after playing pretty regularly in MLS Next Pro for New England Revolution’s reserves last year.

Up Next: Bit of US Open Cup on Thursday at midday against Tulsa Athletic (NZT)

Ben Waine – Plymouth Argyle (English League One)

So... you remember how Plymouth Argyle made it to the EFL Trophy final to be played at Wembley Stadium? One of the major reasons why Ben Waine was held out of the All Whites squad? Well as it happens he didn’t quite crack the matchday squad for that game and it didn’t go very well for Argyle anyway. Conceded twice in the first ten minutes against Bolton Wanderers and ended up losing 4-0. Waine should get a runners-up medal out of it as he’d participated in earlier rounds (including scoring his first goal for the club) but it wasn’t the Wembley gold we’d been hoping for.

Argyle have had a few of these shocker results in recent times with a 3-0 loss to Barnsley a few weeks back also sticking out. But around that they have managed to win four of the last five League One games which, coupled with Sheffield Wednesday hitting the skids, has them still in position for promotion. With eight games left they’re only second on goal difference and Wednesday haven’t won any of their previous five matches plus the Pilgrims have a game in hand.

At this stage the biggest threat is from third-placed Ipswich Town who are two points back and have won seven games in a row all without conceding. Incredible form this late in a busy season. It’s actually eight clean sheets in a row for Ipswich overall. Barnsley are also rallying and Jamie Searle is third-string keeper for them so best case Flying Kiwis scenario would be for Plymouth and Barnsley to go up. Barnsley are five points off the leaders. There’s then an 11 point drop to fifth so it’s those four teams scrapping for two automatic places.

The good news for Plymouth is that they don’t have to play any of the other big three again. Neither do Sheff Weds but they’ve played that extra game, while Barnsley host Ipswich in the third-to-last round. The EFL Trophy slipped away from them but the League One championship is entirely within their own hands and fingers-crossed Ben Waine will get to play his part in that quest.

Up Next: Saturday at 2am away to Morecambe (NZT)

Grace Neville - London City Lionesses (England Championship)

The race for promotion to the WSL isn’t quite as crowded as the relegation dramas unfolding a tier above but it did take another twist this weekend as London City were able to squeeze out a 1-0 win over Charlton. The Lionesses had been unable to capitalise on a decent first half and then survived a couple big chances back the other way before Freda Ayisi was sent off for two bookable offences in the same play: a cynical challenge and then a bad reaction. That was about an hour into the game. Even after that, Charlton still hit the crossbar from a free kick... but a pinpoint finish from Atlanta Primus after an 85th minute corner fell her way eventually gave the points to the Lionesses. Grace Neville played the full thing at right wingback.

Meanwhile leaders Bristol City were stunningly upset 1-0 by Sheffield United, a game that was also influenced by a red card (for BC in the 52nd min, although they were already losing at the time). Suddenly there are only three points between first placed Bristol City and second placed London City with three rounds remaining.

Up Next: Southampton vs LCL on Monday 17 April at 1am (NZT)

Sarpreet Singh - SSV Jahn Regensburg (German Bundesliga 2)

Yeah nah nothing particularly good here. Regensburg have had a couple nice results lately but this week they faced an in-form St Pauli team and despite having more of the chances they went down to a familiarly frustrating 1-0 defeat. A vaguely comical 23rd minute own goal was the difference. Singh got an early yellow card and was subbed with twenty to play. He had one big moment to level things up after 53 minutes, collecting the ball just inside the area and shaping for a shot... but it took a slight deflection and then was very well saved on the outstretched dive. Maybe next week then.

Up Next: Jahn Regensburg vs Magdeburg at 11.30pm on Sunday (NZT)

Ally Green - AGF (Danish Kvindeliga)

Better news on this count as AGF began their relegation round exploits with a convincing 4-0 win away against Sundby. Excellent activities. Even better for Ally Green having played the full ninety. It wasn’t her first game for the club thanks to recent cup efforts but it was her league debut. Goals were scored by Cecilie Johansen (20’), Sarah Sundahl (32’ & 39’), and Sarah Hansen (54’).

A comfortable win for a team that weren’t planning on dipping into the relegation rounds again (like last year) so will at least back themselves to be able to cash in on some victories the rest of the way. They’ll need to because the points refresh for this stage with the bottom two teams through the normal top flight joined by the four top teams of the second tier and only the top two after home and away round robin will remain in the Kvindeliga.

Up in championship rounds, Daisy Cleverley got the start for HB Køge against Nordsjælland but that wasn’t going too well when they were 1-0 down at half-time. Cleverley was then subbed off and they went on to win it 3-1. Points do continue in the champo rounds so that keeps HBK seven clear and on course for a third consecutive league title. Would’ve preferred more Daisy Cleverley action in there but a win is a win.

Up Next: AGF vs Odense at 11pm on 15 April; Thisted vs HBK at 1am on 17 April (NZT)

Alex Greive - St Mirren (Scottish Premiership)

Wasn’t really a day for Greivesy here. Coming back from international break he was on the bench for St Mirren’s game against out-of-form Livingston. Got twenty-odd minutes at the end of the game though didn’t do much after all the fun was had in the first half. Three goals in the spell, Mark O’Hara with a couple of penalties and striker Tony Watt with a goal in between. Watt was signed mid-season amidst a bunch of injuries so him having a fantastic performance may not be great for Greive’s chances of starting regularly the rest of the way.

But it’s brilliant for the team. St Mirren’s 3-0 win lifts them ahead of their opponents and up into fifth on the ladder. Excellent areas for the Buddies as they try to crack the top six for the championship rounds. In fact they’re only three points off fourth as it stands, which would mean Europa Conference League qualifiers. St Mirren do have two really tough away games next against Hearts and Rangers (third and second in the current standings) but that’s also why this win was so important. There are three more games before the split.

Up Next: Hearts vs St Mirren at 2am on Sunday (NZT)

Zac Jones – Haverfordwest County (Welsh/Cymru Premier)

Good times for Jonesy and Haverfordwest County after a 2-0 win away against Flint Town on the weekend. They set this one up nice and early when Corey Shephard’s fifth minute strike from the edge of the area caught the oppo goalie unsighted for the opener. Then twenty minutes later Jordan Levi-Davies doubled that advantage with a well-taken left-footer.

In between those goals Jones had needed to stretch out to be sure of a couple of Flint Town attempts, though with the two-goal lead they were a lot safer. Flint Town ended up with ten men after a late red card – third game in a row that a Haverfordwest County opponent has been sent off. Hwlffordd are four points clear at the top of the relegation round standings with three more games remaining. They hadn’t kept a clean sheet since November until a few weeks ago now Jones has three from four.
