After all that, Portugal are the European Champions.
Perhaps it was a step too far for Iceland, perhaps they’d already exhausted themselves in getting this far. Whatever it was, the fairy tale came to an abrupt end against France as they were thoroughly dismantled.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: An English squad full of talent, hyped up as possible winners ahead of a major tournament, stumble through the group stages and fall to a weaker opponent in a hideously unimaginative performance.
And with that, just as they always do, England found a way to disappoint.
Now we’re into the real stuff… but, mate, what a couple of days it’s been for the underdogs!
Wales only needed a result against a poor Russian side to progress. They got that and then some, smashing them 3-0 and it could have been several more.
There are a bunch of underdog nations competing in these expanded Euros but Iceland are the one that have captured the most hearts.
If you’d seen him for West Ham this season then Dimitri Payet’s efforts in the Euro 2016 opener were no big surprise. He’s been doing stuff like that for about ten months now, pulling all the strings and scoring worldies.

Anytime you’re able to beat the world champions just a few months out from a major competition, that’s a good thing. Even more so when you do it with a hearty comeback on the back of a group of young and inexperienced players.
