BLACKCAPS In Australia. Second Test. WACA. Day One (Day Six Of The Torture)
There was a hope that a move to Perth would be an opportunity to restore some pride. What a perfect time to re-use my favourite quote from Brendon McCullum after the first Test as he labeled his BLACKCAPS team as a 'bounce back team'.
Unfortunately for us (you, your mate and I) and of course the kiwi cricketers toiling away in typically Australian conditions, them Aussies are bossing our lads.
Throughout the day, I hoped that I would be gifted with something different. Brisbane was pure Australian dominance which after a few days, doesn't give you much to write about and despite the inclusion of Matt Henry, many of the same problems remain with the kiwi bowlers. One maiden once again tells the story of a bowling attack that couldn't sustain any sort of pressure and missed their desired areas on a consistent basis.
Australia's batsmen are balls deep in runs with Daivd Warner hitting his third century in three innings' ... plus his first double hundy ever (surely he's eyeing up a triple and a record-breaker) and Usman Khawaja continuing his comeback with his second century in three innings. These guys are playing well and Warner has quickly slid into the same class as AB de Villiers, Joe Root, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Angelo Mathews as the world's best batsmen. I am fairly certain that Warner would not be scoring 200+ on the first day of a Test if the kiwi bowlers could hit the top of off-stump for more than two deliveries. That's why this is torture.
It's the same catch-22 situation for captain McCullum. McCullum hasn't been able to set fields and build pressure because the bowlers haven't backed him up, while some of McCullum's moves are rather funky as he was quick to defend and allowed Australia to rotate the strike with ease. But again, the bowlers didn't help.
I did like the work of Doug Bracewell though. Mark Craig, not so much.
Do we worry more about Craig or Trent Boult?
At least we'll get to watch Kane face the Aussie fire ... right?
