Black Caps Black Book .../Diary - How You Feeling On Wednesday?

It's Wednesday and I'm reasonably confident.

I'm feeling good because today we have the first quarter final between South Africa and Sri Lanka, which is an interesting match up. Our match up against the West Indies is perfect.

Not only is the match up perfect with the West Indian weaknesses going hand in hand with our strengths, but I'd like to flip the script on my idea of not solely focusing on Chris Gayle. The Black Caps have proven themselves to be so much more than a gun whack, whack, whacker of a cricket ball in Brendon McCullum and two of the best swing bowlers on the planet.

The guys who don't get the praise of the others, have all brought into the team mentality and it's a beautiful thing.

It starts with Guppy for me and he's completely altered his batting style which I'm not sure is because he wanted to or because of what the team needs. The team doesn't need another swashbuckler at the top of the innings to go with B-Mac and this idea of Guptil not scoring quickly enough is a bit silly because that's simply not his job in this team.

Grant Elliot fits that mould, he's not out to show the world that he's a fabulous batsmen, he just knows what the Black Caps want him to do. Corey Anderson has bucket loads of talent but right now, his job is to just finish off an innings and bowl well when called on.  Adam Milne knows that some games he might not even bowl, some games he might only bowl a few overs because Anderson's got the hot hand etc. But when it's his turn, he's ready, charging in bowling accurate thunderbolts.

Luke Ronchi, it's cool because both the younger lads and the experienced heads approach this team ethos with the same understanding. You wouldn't expect nothing less of Ronchi and like Elliot they know what it's going to take for the Black Caps to win. They've been around and they know that their individual efforts fall behind the greater good of the team.

When I look at the West Indies, I don't see any clarity.

I don't see them knowing exactly what their role is within the team and I don't see the sum of all their individual parts being greater than ours.

#DoYourJob. The Black Caps clearly know their roles within the team and are comfortable with them but that's easy to do in pool play. It's easy to come to the crease in the 25th over, in pool play and knuckle down, start slow and build an innings and be confident that your hard work at that moment will help the pinch hitters later on.

It's not so easy when you're faced with that scenario in a quarter final and you can see that the asking run rate is creeping up slowly with every ball that you take to get yourself in. Instead of being supremely confident in your ability to up the tempo in a few overs, or being confident that your team mates can add the polish to your foundation, you could try and take matters into your own hands.

Nah, just do your job for the team at that moment.

Do I think the Black Caps have that mental strength to be able to stick to their plans when the game is on the line against the West Indies? Yeah, because that's what the pool play has been all about. Building that confidence and they've seen their comrades perform, all of them have, which only spreads the good vibes within the team that every player can be relied on to do their job.

The only thing is that we haven't really seen it in this sort of environment, atmosphere or situation. It's going to be nuts and I'm much more worried about the chokers tag being passed on to the Black Caps than South Africa choking again.

At least the foundation has been laid, so we can only be confident.
